need some advice about diy shelving

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Thursday, 1 January 2015 17:31 (nine years ago) link

what kind of advice?

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Thursday, 1 January 2015 20:40 (nine years ago) link

is this a nu bord

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 January 2015 20:42 (nine years ago) link

i think it's existed for a while but appears to be abandoned. not sure what kind of advice just brainstorming how i can do some 18" wide wall shelves in this weird corner and not lose a lot of space to shelf brackets.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Thursday, 1 January 2015 21:09 (nine years ago) link

maybe post a pic of the corner

lag∞n, Thursday, 1 January 2015 21:10 (nine years ago) link

ok i will.

spun ra (anky), Thursday, 1 January 2015 21:47 (nine years ago) link

ok this is not a great picture because it looks like the bookcase (target, hate it) is against one of the walls in the corner. it's not. this corner is like a 19" x 14" pocket. another 9" to the left is the actual exterior wall. this is where they boxed around the forced air heating. so what i want to do is make some permanent wall shelving to put cookbooks and other things on. this is sort of in the "dining room" but it's a rowhouse so it's kind of shotgun. excuse the ugly paint color, horrific cabinets, etc.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:22 (nine years ago) link

well i guess you can't see how bad the paint is. it's yellow. i'm going to paint it before i do shelving. i was thinking get a board from salvage store, have them cut it up, stain it. but i'm not sure how i want to hang it. trying to find some L-brackets that will support it and not look dumb.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:24 (nine years ago) link

Space kinda says "triangular shelves" to me so you don't hook yourself on a shelf corner.

the magnetic pope has sparked (WilliamC), Thursday, 1 January 2015 23:58 (nine years ago) link

well that doorway is like 5 ft wide so i never get that close to it. also hate triangular shelves.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 00:35 (nine years ago) link

can we get a wider shot plz

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:37 (nine years ago) link

of like the whole area where that bookshelf is, i feel like maybe u need to expand the scope of this project

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:39 (nine years ago) link

Instead of brackets, could you use shelves that have a narrow post at each corner? I'm all about stand-alone shelving, probably b/c 1) renter 2) like to rearrange/repurpose.

Jaq, Friday, 2 January 2015 00:43 (nine years ago) link

ha thank you, i mean the other way tho like if we are looking at the book shelf straight on, needless to say feel free to ignore these requests for pictures of yr home

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 01:46 (nine years ago) link

oh. i see. i'm upstairs now. the wall i want shelves on is facing you though. the wall the bookshelf is on is not part of the project. or is it?

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 02:02 (nine years ago) link

yeah thats what im asking myself, like you say you hate those shelves anyway right, lets challenge our assumptions about the boundaries of this project

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 02:52 (nine years ago) link

Here's one idea, it looks like L brackets but on TOP of the shelves and spaced in from the edges so they get almost completely covered up by books.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:02 (nine years ago) link

well i want to put my cookbooks on the new shelves and get rid of the target bookcase. ^ this is kind of what i mean. i'd like the L-brackets to be even more out of the way though. maybe it's fine. you can get sturdy L-brackets not made for shelves that are shorter i just need to remember enough physics to know how short they can be. can't find the answer in all the mom blogs i sifted through.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:08 (nine years ago) link

Sorry, that link doesn't go to the individual item I wanted to show, which was this.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:12 (nine years ago) link

ha i have employed that very bracket before

lag∞n, Friday, 2 January 2015 03:14 (nine years ago) link

http://cds.a9t2h4q7.hwcdn.net/main/store/20090519001/items/media/Hardware/KNAPE001/ProductLarge/0122-7PM.jpg

I've gone with these bracket systems in a bunch of different situations. Height is adjustable, depth is adjustable, I can get as wild as I want with color using unpainted pine boards instead of standard white/black/blond prefinished boards. In my office I have a high 10" deep shelf for LP size box sets & oversize books that overhangs 6" shelves for CDs.

the magnetic pope has sparked (WilliamC), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:18 (nine years ago) link

oh, the brackets are really on top. i thought the bottom of the L was underneath. that seems a bit dangerous.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:22 (nine years ago) link

i was actually going to go with the track shelves because i used them somewhere else but the space is just too narrow for it not to look clunky.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 03:23 (nine years ago) link

i think i am biased against those track shelves because that was what was in my childhood bedroom.

what are the walls made of? Is it old school plaster and lath or ....?

freestanding bookcases are nice if you have walls where you have to do things like drill through brick or have plaster and lath that is secretly crumbling

i grew up and live in the land of earthquakes so my instinct would be to put a sheet of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood up, paint it till it looks ok, and then install the shelves.

Mistah FAAB (sarahell), Friday, 2 January 2015 08:36 (nine years ago) link

what about floating shelves?

http://www.floating-shelves.com/beech-floating-shelves.html

ledge, Friday, 2 January 2015 10:21 (nine years ago) link

yeah i think that is what i'm going to end up doing. i can just drill into the boards. the brackets seem hard to find/expensive though. i've been looking.

walls are just wood frame and drywall so no issue hanging shelves elsewhere in the house. earthquakes not an issue!

hey, home thread cool. I spent my vacation days on putting in a new shelf that I'm very happy with. it used to skip like crazy before and now I can jump up and down in front of it.

http://altairnouveau.com/IMG_9399.jpg

also, on topic, here are shelves that we put up a while back.

http://altairnouveau.com/IMG_9401.jpg

not really a light touch at all, but I like bracket shelves that kind of lay the hardware right out. floating shelves or other minimal solutions seem kind of fussy to me maybe?

chinavision!, Friday, 2 January 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

uh should be "a new turntable shelf" and "it (being the turntable) used to skip like crazy"

chinavision!, Friday, 2 January 2015 16:52 (nine years ago) link

we have ugly baseboard heating. thus all the wall-mounted shelves.

just1n3, Friday, 2 January 2015 20:50 (nine years ago) link

i like those shelves. i just don't want the hardware here because it's a small space.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 23:21 (nine years ago) link

kinda going back and forth though. i don't always like the look of floating either.

kola superdeep borehole (harbl), Friday, 2 January 2015 23:25 (nine years ago) link

Chinavision - that's a Marantz on the book shelf, right? Is that a Rega on the small shelf?

I agree, very nice setup. What do you do for vinyl storage?

los blue jeans, Friday, 2 January 2015 23:28 (nine years ago) link

know what, i'm gonna think about those track shelves again. the white looks cool. it looks like a place where someone lives, not some bullshit on pinterest.

the lamps are ikea

chinavision!, Saturday, 3 January 2015 00:18 (nine years ago) link

and most records are on ikea shelves, with a lot of twelve inches around the corner in my studio, which is very messy. if I could I'd replace the shelves with something white.
plus a gratuitous shot of our mantle.

the hardware of those shelves seems less bulky/intrusive bc its the same color as the walls

just1n3, Saturday, 3 January 2015 00:34 (nine years ago) link

i think it wld be good tho

lag∞n, Saturday, 3 January 2015 16:26 (nine years ago) link

i think it would be too i just don't want to make the space any narrower

i am def not a GTD person just in it for the decluttering, which tbf i am already pretty into, its just like an interest of mine

i love when things are not cluttered too. you wouldn't know it looking at my office or house though.

the main take away from that book seems throw everything you dont absolutely adore or use constantly away in one swoop then make sure everything thats left has an assigned place to be put away, i only read the first chapter tho, i think theres advice abt how to specifically organize stuff too

we just ripped out track shelving but it looked awful in a georgian living room. want to replace it with tall cupboards/cabinets we can cover in wallpaper but not sure you can get ones tall and narrow enough. or maybe you can and they're called wardrobes idk

i put up the shelves. i'll take a picture when my kitchen is clean again (lol, never). i used white track shelving and a cheap pine board i got cut up at home depot. i'll paint it white when it's warm out. looks fine! i might get that magic decluttering book.

upstairs hallway light bulbs die. upon taking shade off i notice there was only one 40w bulb in there. got new bulbs. realize i was not paying attention and the things you screw in were the small size. get bulbs again. install. absentmindedly put screws holding lip of glass shade to ceiling fitting on way too tight. shade cracks into pieces from pressure of screws 1 min later. SO STUPID.

Was considering doing a shari vari in the back of our bookshelves but decided to go for a single colour instead. Which should match/complement the blind.

kinder, Friday, 24 February 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link

To be more specific, different grays go with different other colors. It's more about the shading than anything. There are a million grays.

i have the desire to paint, de-clutter and clean when I'm totally slammed with work and don't have time to do these things -- also, the desire is an escape mechanism -- putting off one thing in favor of something else that isn't as immediately necessary but easier. bedroom really needs paint, as it hasn't been painted in almost 20 yrs (as in right before I moved in). But I'm going to wait until summer or at least warmish spring, so I can open the windows to air out the paint smell.
