i doubt i'll be crying. i have no idea what it is. i'll google...

okay, they are a duo who are friends with hush arbors and roger adultery. 320 copies explains the possible crying i guess.

Stormy Davis, Monday, 22 February 2010 04:13 (fourteen years ago) link

and yeah this is basically what that recent reish is, cloth-bound, with the tassle and so on. Really ridiculous, sticker was $48 bucks. But, like I say I had the 20 in credit, which made it more acceptable. and it *is* a pretty beautiful object..

Stormy Davis, Monday, 22 February 2010 04:15 (fourteen years ago) link

totally open to recommendations for this sort of thing btw.

how bout Phenomenal Handclap Band? saw them earlier tonight at the bowling alley and they were pretty sweet. they were actually more rock than I expected, some of their shit sounded like the Doobie Bros. I was down.

I guess it's debatable how much they are "this sort of thing" compared to Real Life Is No Cool but it's in the ballpark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye1ywnVS9Nw

dmr, Monday, 22 February 2010 04:52 (fourteen years ago) link

my coworker told me about them a few months ago -- are they cool?

69, Monday, 22 February 2010 17:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought they were pretty cool, yeah! They're kinda hard to get a handle on. The first track I heard by them was "Baby," total neo-retro-soul, could be on Daptone records (somebody in Phenomenal Handclap is in Antibalas I think, or in that scene). Then I heard "You'll Disappear" which is waaaaay different, slicker nu-disco track that got the 15-minute Prins Thomas Remiks treatment ...

Live they were somewhere between those 2 extremes, groovy beardo rock with fuzz guitar and the occasional spacey disco synth arpeg. thrown on top. Haven't heard the whole LP yet but now I want to.

Francois Kervorkian feat. Jah Wobble, the Edge, and Holgar Czukay - this is so weird...it's kinda like...man Japan if they were a 80s dance band mixed with work music and post punk? or SOMETHING? One song written by Arthur Russell

Clipd Beaks - To Realize - if you are big on the Liars you will like this band, really fucking great stuff....on Lovepump United

Yoko Ono - Walking on Thin Ice 12"

is this hard to find? i haven't seen it around but want want want

i think ian might dig a lot of the stuff on smalltown supersound. the 'on fire' and 'sunkissed' comps are both pretty excellent (idk how enticing the prospect of a remixed sunburned hand of the man track is to you dudes, but that track is ace imo). also the new prins thomas kinda nails the krautier side of this stuff
