The Ex & Tom Cora rekkerd is GRRREAT! both of the albums they made together are among the best stuff the Ex is associated with. and some of the best stuff of the 90s PERIOD

pick it up psychegawsple!! don't listen to 69. I can't recommend it highly enough. you won't be disappointed

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

saw them together at the Lounge Ax in Chicago mid-90s. one of the best shows ever

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean, theres a lot of things i dont like on first listen, then come to love. the ex just sounds kinda bloodless or something??

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 17:59 (fourteen years ago) link

wow! "bloodless" is like the farthest adjective from my mind I could ever use to describe them. their whole 20+ year existence is like the polar opposite of that! but not tryin to fite or anything. we like what we like. but don't you like Dog Faced Hermans?? kinda the same vibe

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i like DFH pretty good. they remind me a little more of TFUL282 than the ex, though?

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

plus the ex is too POLITICAL

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago) link

well I love all three of those bands. I actually think The Ex sound more urgent/frenetic than DFH (and of course Andy from DFH went on to join The Ex.) actually saw them like three weeks ago here in Chicago (first show since G.W. Sok left the band) and they were still on fire

plus I'm on board with The Ex's politics, so..

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:18 (fourteen years ago) link

newish blue The Ex best-of double LP is ace, still in heavy rotation crate. srsly re-try, now more than ever

Snop Snitchin, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i guess urgent/frenetic sounds too STRIDENT to me or something? i dont know, there's no real good rubric for what i immediately like, etc! probably ill be jockin the ex so hard in 6 months, ordering vintage ex shirts on ebay etc

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:22 (fourteen years ago) link

jockin' the ex

Mr. Que, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

done that a few times havent we all amirite

69, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:24 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I hear you .. nobody likes to be PREACHED at, but w/ The Ex, I dunno it just kinda works. as part of the whole package. plus they are just so lovable and genuine about it, they aren't like I dunno "Rage Against the Machine" or somethin

Stormy Davis, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the Ex. I'm OK with political music though - love anarcho-punk stuff like Crass, Conflict etc. The 1st Ex album sounds a bit like early Crass.

Most of my Ex stuff is on CD though. I only have Aural Guerrilla on LP. And the new 7".

Colonel Poo, Friday, 2 April 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

amazing free Ex show in NYC Lincoln Center a couple summers ago, in Ethiopian mode -- they are a band I will always go see.

recent record treats:

most of my Ex stuff is on CD too! like ALL of my Ex stuff, except for this new Mississippi reissue and a copy of 'Too Many Cowboys' I bought years ago.

there is a record store next to my house that had like every Ex release on CD. so I slowly just bought them up figuring, fuck it, I wanna support this place, plus I just wearied at the idea of hunting down all of the original LPs on eBay or whatever. Plus their CD packaging is pretty rad. Stuff like the '1936' thing, which replicates the original book that the vinyl came with. Or 'Dignity of Labour' which comes in a box with all the orignal inserts, etc...

^ pretty good finds at on the corner in san jose. seemed obvious that they came across a bunch of semi-embarrassing 80s vinyl purged from some local college radio station's back stock and were selling most of it for 50 cents apiece. i doubt any of it is worth much in resale value- 'KSCU' is written huge on all the covers and there are stickers and comments all over- but i was pretty happy with what i came across. the dj comments on the pat metheny/ecm stuff are worth the price alone

^ i love that album, so stoked. that wim mertens record is very similar actually, really liked that one too

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, 5 April 2010 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

cool! where is on the corner anyway? i only know the ones on bascomb: streetlight; space cat; and that old record barn place??

69, Monday, 5 April 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

on the corner is in campbell technically i guess, on e. campbell near the 17. kind of a gold mine even just for their normal (non-50 cent) stock, which is priced very very reasonably. i hear if the owner is there he's really great about recommendations, being friendly etc.

and ugh, al's record barn is such a bummer- dude closes at like 4 and is a total dick about it (seriously YELLING at people because he didn't want to hit traffic, and there were at least 8 customers in the damn shop). i guess records there used to be half-off sticker prices (which are RIDICULOUS- $15 for a phil collins album kind of thing), but we were told they did away with that just last week (!?!?) so my advice is to completely avoid the place. found a $10 copy of 'no pussyfooting' there tho.

streetlight was ok, but i think i was expecting more.

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Monday, 5 April 2010 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

agreed on all counts. i found a sealed howling hex 2 for under $10 and yoko's FLY for $20 in the past couple months at streetlight, so that definitely wins for san jose. im hittin a scrabble tournament in campbell in may; ill have to check out on the corner.

it is mentioned on the rolling psych/drone/freak thread.

it's awesome, kinda?? it's kinda raga-psych, explicit sandy bull *& spacemen three influences (they say so right on the sleeve.) chilean hippy kids. if their myspace page is to be believed, they found a kilo of coke & re-sold it to buy awesome vintage gear?

jesus christ amoeba was insane-o last night with good records

the young big bill broonzy 1928-1935 (yazoo)
a collection of mountain banjo songs & tunes (county)
possesion and poetry in madagascar (ocora)
bohannon -- dance your ass off
anthology of african music: ba-benzele pygmies (unesco)
musical instruments 4: flutes and horns (hugh tracey's music of africa series)

moving has depleted my records-fund while i wait for the old security deposit, etc, so i seriously left 10-20 amazing african records in the bins. all the good ocora/unesco shit was priced like $18-25, so i dont feel like it's the deal of the century or anything, but if you want some really beautifully recorded african music, check out the SF amoeba international section this weekend!
