wilter, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 04:35 (fourteen years ago) link

yer typical chugging lo-fi gubbins, not sure how it compares to the LP though as i haven't heard it..

the how was pretty fun at the SF slumberland show

skot: link4u http://www.myspace.com/kitchensfloor

from the unhip (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:09 (fourteen years ago) link

it is mentioned on the rolling psych/drone/freak thread.

it's awesome, kinda?? it's kinda raga-psych, explicit sandy bull *& spacemen three influences (they say so right on the sleeve.) chilean hippy kids. if their myspace page is to be believed, they found a kilo of coke & re-sold it to buy awesome vintage gear?

ian, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Wow that band is pretty good! I want to hear more

van smack, Tuesday, 6 April 2010 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i totally read "chilean" as "from a chill place or a state of chilling"

jesus christ amoeba was insane-o last night with good records

the young big bill broonzy 1928-1935 (yazoo)
a collection of mountain banjo songs & tunes (county)
possesion and poetry in madagascar (ocora)
bohannon -- dance your ass off
anthology of african music: ba-benzele pygmies (unesco)
musical instruments 4: flutes and horns (hugh tracey's music of africa series)

moving has depleted my records-fund while i wait for the old security deposit, etc, so i seriously left 10-20 amazing african records in the bins. all the good ocora/unesco shit was priced like $18-25, so i dont feel like it's the deal of the century or anything, but if you want some really beautifully recorded african music, check out the SF amoeba international section this weekend!

just back from the Chicago Independent Radio Project record fair, got there way late, was hungover, only hit two vendors, still got some good finds, will drink less tonite and go back tomorrow for sure:

Buffalo Springfield - s/t (real clean VG+ copy on 1841 Broadway for 6 bucks! totally excellent starter until I have enough spare cash to actively hunt down a "Baby Don't Scold Me" version)
Meredith Monk - Turtle Dreams
Muhal Richard Abrams - Lifea Blinec (on Arista, never even knew this record existed! god bless Michael Cuscuna)
David Bedford - The Odyssey
Raszebrae - Cheap Happiness or Lofty Suffering (one of the few records from xhuxk's book that I *don't* own! we shall see....)
Jack Traylor and Steelwind - Child of Nature (after just talking about it the other week -- there it was! 4 bucks. i'm psyched to hear it)
Kensington Market - Avenue Road
Billion Dollar Babies - Battle Axe
Lol Creme/Kevin Godley - Consequences (like xhuxk, I've been on a big 10CC binge myself the last couple weeks, always wanted a copy of this, one of my good record collecting buddies swears by it so we shall see. beautiful box...)
Roy Orbison - Mystery Girl (sealed copy, 3 bucks)

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:50 (fourteen years ago) link

stupidly didn't bring enough cash, and saw a few fishes that i left in the pond even in the short time I was there. going back tomorrow for sure

got stuff for the store today and a couple of things for me. got lots of dollar 45s. rock, soul, etc. nice stuff at the flea market. i actually spent the most money today on this one woman's childhood 45s.

anyway:

danny o'keefe - american roulette (only have a test pressing of this and needed a regular copy cuz i am number one danny fan)

badings/raaljmakers - evolutions & contrasts (nice to find for a dollar! cool electronic 60's stuff on limelight)

joe diorio/wally cirillo - soloduo (jazz guitar dude i've never heard of. 70's. spitball records!}

prelude - after the gold rush (trio on island from 1974. don't think i've ever heard it)

martin bisi - creole mass

shawn phillips - furthermore

clyles & lenny - it isn't the same (guitar and violin duo on columbia. never heard them. with poster!)

nemperor label sampler (don't even know why i bought this. i have the tommy bolin and lenny white tracks featured here and don't really care much about the rest.)

menace - doghouse (laswell, le blanc, bootsy, etc)

tyrone tystick brunson - sticky situation (siked to get this for a dollar. classic track "new wave disco punk funk rock")

riot - fire down under

meadowlark lemon - my kids ("po' folks disco"!)

fats domino 2lp greatest hits

universe city - s/t

dynasty - adventures in the land of music

back street crawler - s/t

milton nascimento - milton (needed this. two bucks!)

the dingoes - five times the sun

backstreet crawler - the band plays on

frijid pink - s/t (have this but i can't pass up a minty copy for six bucks. this record used to sell for money!)

heads hands & feet - s/t (double album)

freddie king - 17 hits (federal singles. very cool for 2 bucks)

oliver lake - life dance of is

feelies - only life

odyssey - hollywood party tonight

flux - uncarved block (actually paid 12 bucks for this from the people who used to own main street music in northampton. they still sell at shows and online. they were at the flea market. plus, it's unopened and i have worn my original copy OUT. one of my fave albums of all time. 12 bucks seemed worth it. bought the feelies record from them too. couldn't remember if i had it on vinyl! i think i do. oh well. it's a minty promo. i can always use a spare or something.)

found a sealed melvins album at the flea market today. that's always good to sell. got lots of clean classic rock for the store there too. and those cool singles. good day overall.

scott seward, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

what label is that oliver lake on?

never gotten into danny o'keefe, but i've listened to a few of his records.
"Stoo" of "Stooz Records" (old store in the east village) is #1 Prelude fan.

ian, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Prelude's After the Goldrush was a big hit in Britain in '73, so their records are relatively plentiful and cheap over here - Owlcreek Incident is well worth a pop if you see it.

sonofstan, Sunday, 11 April 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago) link

today....

"I'd buy that for a dollar!" Great purchases for a buck or less

Steve Moore - Fever Dream/30,000 Feet Deep 10"
Steve Moore - Demo 2003
Sun Araw - On Patrol

van smack, Sunday, 11 April 2010 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

that steve moore record kicks major ass

what's "demo 2003" like?

from the unhip (electricsound), Sunday, 11 April 2010 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I think its from the early part of the decade. Sounds not far off from the Henge. "Fever Dream" does kick ass and is an extra on this. Moore is the better half of Zombi, imo.

johnny darrell - california stop-over
american folksongs sung by rosalie sorrels (prestige; i think i have most of the rosalie rekkerds by now.)
norma tanega - walking my cat name dog (jacket looks fairly straight aside from the cover, but these songs are weird and the arrangements border on psychedelic & ragged at times.)
v/a - the puget sound guitar workshop
stephen & the farm band - up in your thing (private; kind of a dead/nrps vibe? songs like "hey beatnik!", "easy does it" and "nice ladies.")

ian, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago) link

re: norma tanega, i meant to write "jacket looks fairly straight aside from the title"

ian, Monday, 12 April 2010 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

v/a - the puget sound guitar workshop
this is a lil treat of a record!

the country side of esther phillips (slays)
swamp dogg - salty dog / come on and dance with me 45

and some stuff from a collection we bought that i pulled out.. maybe won't buy all of these, but probably:
john prine - bruised orange, sweet revenge
steve young - rock salt & nails (i might have a weird reissue of this, haveta check)
denny doherty - whatcha gonna do
ian matthews - journeys from the gospel oak (last one i need i think.)
norman greenbaum - back home again

ian, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

ha, that is basically the last Matthews I need too, and also missing the first s/t Matthews Southern Comfort. 'Journeys' is a difficult sucker to come across. there was a copy at the record fair but it was a little beat. also the inner sleeve was caked with some grody crap. not mold, just ... some sort of weird organic matter. just a plain white inner, could have easily swapped it out for a new sleeve. was only 5 bucks, could have made a decent starter copy, but.. i passed

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:00 (fourteen years ago) link

other stuff i did end up buying on the second day:

Caravan - Waterloo Lily
The Flying Lizards - s/t ($3 thought this was a good deal)
Cecil Taylor Unit - Dark to Themselves
John Martyn - One World
Pink Floyd - Final Cut
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Buckingham Nicks - s/t (gatefold! $20, seemed like a fair price, very clean)
Mike Oldfield - Incantations
Wolfsbane - Live Fast, Die Fast (sealed, $4)
Nazareth - Rampant
Wilbert Harrison - Let's Work Together ($20, original on Sue)
Van Morrison - A Period of Transition (sealed, $3)
Dudu Pukwana & Spear - In the Townships
Satwa - s/t

bought the last two from Byron, who wasn't there the first day but was a pleasant surprise on the second day. Rapped w/ him about Armand Schaubroeck and Rochester for a bit. he gave me the Dudu for 25 and the Satwa for 20 (already had the Satwa on CD, but I couldn't pass up an easy upgrade to the vinyl.)

most of the rest of these were between 1-3 bucks:

Little Feat - Waiting for Columbus (amazingly never owned this!)
Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway - s/t
Neil Young & The Blue Notes - This Note's For You
Raydio - s/t
Albert Collins - Frostbite (with the great cut "Snowed In")
Alice Coltrane & Carlos Santana - Illuminations
Jerry Jeff Walker - Bein' Free
Jerry Jeff Walker - Viva Terlingua!
Jerry Jeff Walker - Walker's Collectables
Jerry Jeff Walker - Ridin' High

got the four Jerry Jeff's from my buddy Roger for a buck each. Ian, after your ongoing proselytizing, I decided to jump in head first! (he actually had a couple later albums too but I figured four was a good start..)

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:18 (fourteen years ago) link

got the following stuff on record store day: Soft Machine - Live 2lp, Hendrix Live @ Clark University EP, Buddy Guy - A Man & The Blues LP, Rodriguez - "Inner City Blues" 7", Wilco Live box set

also various used stuff:

Throwing Muses - Chains Changed 12"
Die Kreuzen - s/t (original, not bad copy, but definitely not "FROM A SMOKE FREE HOME")
Teena Marie - Emerald City ($2)
Barry Adamson - Moss Side Story
Farquahr - s/t

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Stormy, I eagerly anticipate you getting drunk & posting to the jerry jeff thread--those are great records, Bein' Free and Viva Terlingua especially.

Just got rid of that Farquahr record... trying to make space.
