Captain Marryat on youtube, sound pretty cool. Not heard them before and a lot was made of the discovery of the acetate at the time in certain quarters.
Nice Hammond organ driven prog with psychy touches. I like it.

the holydrug couple -- ancient land 12"

I accidentally played this at 33. I didn't notice until halfway on side b. It sounded just like what the band name represents.

new dirtbombs is so good

I dunno I kind of expected to like it more. Cosmic Cars and Alleys of Your Mind are pretty hot but a lot of the rest isn't doing it for me. Like I don't know the original of Good Life but if I heard that song cold without knowing the background that it was a cover, or that it was the Dirtbombs, it'd just sound like some 3rd-gen dancepunk.

the dead c - patience

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 17 February 2011 04:32 (thirteen years ago) link

totally agree w/u dmr. i really wanted to like it, but i'd never listened to dirtbombs before and i didn't know all of the original tracks. i was really hyped on it when i heard shari vari, but the rest just sorta sounded like the rapture

re: pearls before swine, have to put a word in for the first couple of reprise releases. maybe lacking the pre-raphaelitesque (sorry) mystery of the esp-disk records, but still great. green and blue, dig the lisps.

no lime tangier, Thursday, 17 February 2011 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i love all pearls. i think tom rapp's 'stardancer' is one of the best things he's been involved with.. gotta listen to that again tonight.

the Dirtbombs are pretty fuckin rad overall but if you've got a choice to listen to Ultraglide in Black or their cover of Strings of Life I'm gonna go w/ the former 9 times out of 10

Just made the hole bigger in this record with a knife so that side 1 which was pressed off-centre would play a little better:

Sea Scouts - Pattern Recognition - nice dirty noise-rock from Tasmania.

Larry Coryell & Jazz Workshop Boston 13/9/72
not sure I've heard this before. Pretty groovy. skronk electric jazz with Coryell's nimble fingering.

nice records these past few days!

69, Monday, 21 February 2011 04:43 (thirteen years ago) link

today:

don cherry/ed blackwell - el corazón
charlie haden - the ballad of the fallen (forgot how much i liked this)
baden-baden free jazz orchestra, terje rypdal group, karin krog, breuker-surman duo - gittin' to know y'all

thought about posting about the latter on the jazz jaaz jzz thread, but didn't really fit the parameter of the questions: definitely an interesting listen from the 1969 baden-baden free jazz meeting with the first side and a half taken up by (most of) the art ensemble of chicago, dave burrell and sundry english and european jazz types conducted by lester bowie, and the rest of the record isn't bad either. the karin krog unaccompanied multi-layered voice piece might be my favourite part.

vernon wray reissue.
anyone else pick this up? are they all warped? i wonder if they were exposed to heat in shipping; every copy we got at the store has a pretty bad edge warp.. plays but looks like hell and makes me sad.
