what should we list my wife's original copy of GBV's 'propeller' for?
should we put a reserve? do it buy-it-now?

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

roll the dice. start it at ten bucks. live dangerously.

scott seward, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

i never have understood setting a reserve on records, it usually discourages me from bidding. i prefer the seller to start the record at either the base amount they want for it or starting cheap and letting people decide what they want.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:22 (twelve years ago) link

i kind of agree on no reserve.

skot: don't want to start it low because, tbh, it's only "worth selling" if it's gonna help us significantly pay off our vet bills/other debts. so i don't want to list it at $10 and have it only sell for $200, even though that's a lot of money, ya know

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:30 (twelve years ago) link

tbh, i think we might just put it up buy it now for $1000 and see what happens lol.

mike rep cover art.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:36 (twelve years ago) link

there are gbv records that sell for money???

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago) link

propeller was ltd to 500 copies with hand made covers... routinely sells in the 700-1000 range. sometimes more, sometimes less, but that's kinda the average i think.

i wish i still had my records from high school, white bee thousand, vampire on whatever, devil between my toes

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 00:57 (twelve years ago) link

which cover do you have, ian?

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 01:56 (twelve years ago) link

i've always made good money on gbv stuff. steady sellers. like pearl jam.

scott seward, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 02:19 (twelve years ago) link

it's not mine, it's helen's, but it's a mike rep drawn cover. like the one on that website but without the red.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 03:22 (twelve years ago) link

man. I don't have anything with a Mike Rep drawn cover, but I *do* have an original of GBV's 'Sandbox'. On whatever label they released it on. I bought it direct from Scat ... after the either the 'Grand Hour' EP or the 'Vampire' LP came out, Scat started selling a bunch of GBV backstock early LPs through their mail order distro catalog. I loved the 'Grand Hour' thing so much that I punted on a copy of 'Sandbox.' Didn't buy the others because I was a broke youngin'. Later I got the 6lp box set, so ever since I've had two Sandboxes.

http://www.popsike.com/php/quicksearch.php?searchtext=guided+sandbox&x=0&y=0

seems like I could hope for $50?

anyway Ian , I'm with Jordan .. reserves = bad! I personally don't bid on 'em. waste of time

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 04:04 (twelve years ago) link

Saw The Strapping Fieldhands play at Cake Shop a year ago or something and I think me and my girlfriend were the only ones who showed up that weren't opening for them. Or at least it was practically that way.

"Hi I got the lp and the record itself have alot of spots on it, on both sides. Im gonna have it cleaned and see if they come out. "

i wonder abt stuff like this. people not using precise words so that i have NO IDEA what this guy means by 'spots.' iirc the record was NM. i think maybe he means dust particles??

think it might be a tough sell to start it so high but good luck man!! I shared your link on Facebook. I think before you mail it off I should come over and visit it. soak in the aura.

have you thought about trying to post it to a GBV fan forum or something? like is this thing still active? http://www.gbv.com/postal.html

or maybe the Matador msgboard

STUNNING MASTER TAPE SOUND ON SIDE ONE! And side two, at A+ to A++, is excellent in its own right. This is an incredible recording, a member of our Top 100, but it takes a copy like this to make it come to life.

I confess to not ever having taken this album seriously, dismissing it as a commercial collection of pop hits with as much depth as the L.A. river, but I was wrong wrong WRONG. This is a great album on the right LP, not the compressed piece of grainy cardboard pop we're used to. The typical pressing barely hints at the tremendous energy and top-quality musicianship that characterizes practically every track on this wonderful record.

Ouch! I have no idea what that is but judging by the description, I'd buy one for $6.16...

It's a beautiful set. 2XLP and a really wonderful coffee style photo book.

Until now. Because “The Forever Family”, a rock band with two reality TV shows starring Shirley Jones in development from Las Vegas Nevada, needs to raise $1,000,000 to purchase a very special very destroyed and very infamous house to renovate and shoot another pilot, they are offering their greatest and most prized possession up for auction: Their priceless set of Screen Gem Records.
