my dad used to take me to see jamil play with harold mabern and george coleman. he was so amazing. he's on some of my fave records. the stuff he did with ahmad jamal is great.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago) link

Damn it, my offer of $20 was rejected. What is wrong with this guy?

$899.00 and we'll talk

Evan, Saturday, 31 August 2013 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

This kind of thing really angers me. At best this record would sell in an auction for maybe $10.00 with the top repaired by tape and it says more seams are split. It's a lounge record from New Orleans, no fuzz or psych moves. He says soul/funk, but come on. Frankie Brent had a few 45's on different major labels in the 60's doing R&B/popcorn that are mildly collectable. In the 70's played at hotels and bars, still playing 60's songs in a cheesy lounge style. I mean even one of the most sought after lounge records by JC Ann Trio only sells for $250 at best. The weirdo Jerry Solomon has sold for $1000, but those have been hyped by Paul Major since the 80's. What is this guy thinking. Does he even know his records?

JacobSanders, Saturday, 31 August 2013 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

i got a copy of this gem:

That looks good!

JacobSanders, Saturday, 31 August 2013 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

the shuga records dude is RIDICULOUS...

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 31 August 2013 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

Ohhhh it's shuga. Yeah I wouldn't put any effort into that. And as far as genre description most sellers I see are a step closer than MySpace genre accuracy if anything.

Evan, Sunday, 1 September 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

what's up with people emailing you before an auction is even over to send you a lowball offer? like, just wait to see if it doesn't sell before offering me below my opening bid, dude.

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

and you know, if it doesn't sell, im happy to keep this ragtime record for my own self!

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

reggae people would always offer me half of what a record was worth. i ignored them.

scott seward, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

But.. but I can give you $XX cash right now

Evan, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Had a dude try this one last night with <6 hours to go:

"I wish to withdraw my bid please.. I just won a purchase for a similar item. Hope you understand, thank you."

His bid was eclipsed fortunately, but also thankfully eBay now has safeguards/seller protection to prevent shit like this from getting out of hand.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 6 September 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, that's ridic -- don't bid on two copies of the same record until you know you've lost one. or if you're prepared to buy two copies.

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

(ebay ppl have it easy in that regard. there are two copise of the skillet lickers 'liberty' 78rpm in two different mail auctions right now -- and i want that record, cuz it's really great, but i'm not gonna bid on both copies cuz i don't want to own both copies.)

ian, Friday, 6 September 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

I won this lounge record on Sept 1 and today on the 7th, I received a message : "There will be a slight delay for your record. I am out of stock of mailing LP supplies. I am searching for emergency supply and should have your record out Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for your patience and for bidding."

JacobSanders, Sunday, 8 September 2013 03:49 (eleven years ago) link

i'm always happy if people just tell me what the hell is going on. it makes a big difference.

scott seward, Sunday, 8 September 2013 13:40 (eleven years ago) link

yup

money, chicken and other DNA (sleeve), Sunday, 8 September 2013 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

I'm actually surprised, he didn't just make a mailer! I've received a lot of records in make shift crappy boxes, one was two pieces of cardboard then wrap in so much tape, I think he used a half a roll.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 8 September 2013 17:44 (eleven years ago) link

UGH DISCOGS PROBLEM!!!!

so, this guy who bought abt $100 worth of records from me, says they finally got to him in Australia and are all heat damaged -- what do I do?
I can't really afford to refund him, but I feel like a dick if I tell him he's got to eat it? The package was not insured.

ian, Thursday, 12 September 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

ouch... maybe give him 30 bucks? tbf this is why you (the buyer) should insure int'l orders. can he get a refund from Paypal? does that create problems for you if he does?

money, chicken and other DNA (sleeve), Thursday, 12 September 2013 15:47 (eleven years ago) link

If he makes a claim with PayPal it takes if outta my account. If he makes a claim with the post office I don't think that works cuz I only declared the package for like twenty bucks..

ian, Thursday, 12 September 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago) link

UGH Australia, man. :(

i guess i could have put that in the price check thread huh
sorry!

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 13 September 2013 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

great record! i think i paid around $20 for my copy, but i dunno what the 'going rate' is.

ian, Friday, 13 September 2013 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

oh yes it is so so so so wonderful-- it's one of my top 3 favorites of theirs but i wanted to know whether $29 was too much to pay
(i already paid it because i felt like i needed a present, but i just wanted to be reassured that i was not an idiot even though i know that clearly i am an idiot)

in other news OMG THIS RECORD IS MINE

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 13 September 2013 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

:D $29 is fine, totally worth it.

ian, Friday, 13 September 2013 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

i am so excited to get it in my paws and listen to it :)

anyone wanna guess what this is gonna sell for?
2nd known copy..

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 01:58 (eleven years ago) link

That will sell for 17,5 to 18,500 I'm guessing - I've read often how it is one of the most sought after pre-war blues out there - wonder if Crumb is bidding!

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 20 September 2013 02:48 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think crumb does ebay! i bet Richard Nevins will be one of the high bidders, if not the winner -- head honcho at Shanachie/Yazoo with money to burn..

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 02:59 (eleven years ago) link

you never know, though. i bet it'll sell for a lot. wouldn't be terribly surprised if it tracks $20k.

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

So interesting to think about how people have this kind of money to spend on a record. Other people save up that much to do major renovations or buy new cars.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 04:53 (eleven years ago) link

wow did you read the public Q&A section at the bottom, it sounds like the seller didn't really realize what he had. someone offers $4,000 to end the auction early and he's like "hmm eBay won't let me change it to a Buy It Now, I will call them and see." and then other people chime in that it's worth way more than that. dude almost got hosed.

dmr, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

it looks really clean in the photos too

dmr, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, imagine. He must be shocked thinking about how he almost let it go for so cheap.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

78s are the only game worth playin imo.

thing is, the dudes who are bidding on this, in the even of a win, can probably unload some other rarities to make up the cost, or at least a chunk of the cost.

this is why i only buy string band records, which tend to top out in the 7-800 zone. i rarely pay more than $20 for a 78.

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

I dreamt that I was in bidding war on that Tommy Johnson 78 and Tera came in the room and asked what I was doing. I tried to hide from her cause it $45.000 but she saw my computer screen and got mad at me and told me to stop bidding.

So I won a record on ebay on saturday and he only offered Expedited Shipping or another option that was $21. No media mail option, so I thought ok, I'll just get the record a day earlier, I'll pay the stupid $9.39. So today he finally shipped the record! Why should I pay Expedited Shipping if the seller is going to wait 4 days to ship the record???

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 16:54 (eleven years ago) link

fucckkkk that. i thought ebay required a media mail option??!

ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

Given that, I'd ask for a refund of the difference between media and expedited...
