i guess i could have put that in the price check thread huh
sorry!

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 13 September 2013 21:56 (ten years ago) link

great record! i think i paid around $20 for my copy, but i dunno what the 'going rate' is.

ian, Friday, 13 September 2013 22:34 (ten years ago) link

oh yes it is so so so so wonderful-- it's one of my top 3 favorites of theirs but i wanted to know whether $29 was too much to pay
(i already paid it because i felt like i needed a present, but i just wanted to be reassured that i was not an idiot even though i know that clearly i am an idiot)

in other news OMG THIS RECORD IS MINE

no fomo (La Lechera), Friday, 13 September 2013 22:37 (ten years ago) link

:D $29 is fine, totally worth it.

ian, Friday, 13 September 2013 22:41 (ten years ago) link

i am so excited to get it in my paws and listen to it :)

no fomo (La Lechera), Saturday, 14 September 2013 00:01 (ten years ago) link

That will sell for 17,5 to 18,500 I'm guessing - I've read often how it is one of the most sought after pre-war blues out there - wonder if Crumb is bidding!

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 20 September 2013 02:48 (ten years ago) link

i don't think crumb does ebay! i bet Richard Nevins will be one of the high bidders, if not the winner -- head honcho at Shanachie/Yazoo with money to burn..

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 02:59 (ten years ago) link

you never know, though. i bet it'll sell for a lot. wouldn't be terribly surprised if it tracks $20k.

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 03:01 (ten years ago) link

So interesting to think about how people have this kind of money to spend on a record. Other people save up that much to do major renovations or buy new cars.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 04:53 (ten years ago) link

wow did you read the public Q&A section at the bottom, it sounds like the seller didn't really realize what he had. someone offers $4,000 to end the auction early and he's like "hmm eBay won't let me change it to a Buy It Now, I will call them and see." and then other people chime in that it's worth way more than that. dude almost got hosed.

dmr, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:26 (ten years ago) link

it looks really clean in the photos too

dmr, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:34 (ten years ago) link

Wow, imagine. He must be shocked thinking about how he almost let it go for so cheap.

Evan, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:22 (ten years ago) link

78s are the only game worth playin imo.

thing is, the dudes who are bidding on this, in the even of a win, can probably unload some other rarities to make up the cost, or at least a chunk of the cost.

this is why i only buy string band records, which tend to top out in the 7-800 zone. i rarely pay more than $20 for a 78.

ian, Friday, 20 September 2013 17:31 (ten years ago) link

I dreamt that I was in bidding war on that Tommy Johnson 78 and Tera came in the room and asked what I was doing. I tried to hide from her cause it $45.000 but she saw my computer screen and got mad at me and told me to stop bidding.

JacobSanders, Saturday, 21 September 2013 15:00 (ten years ago) link

78s are the only game worth playin imo.

what do you mean? they are the only records that hold value?

69, Monday, 23 September 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

i'm just being "snarky" as they say on ILE.

ian, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

So I won a record on ebay on saturday and he only offered Expedited Shipping or another option that was $21. No media mail option, so I thought ok, I'll just get the record a day earlier, I'll pay the stupid $9.39. So today he finally shipped the record! Why should I pay Expedited Shipping if the seller is going to wait 4 days to ship the record???

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

fucckkkk that. i thought ebay required a media mail option??!

ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

Given that, I'd ask for a refund of the difference between media and expedited...

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:02 (ten years ago) link

On top of that the seller lives here in Texas and charged me $4 sales tax. Is ebay enforcing people to charge sales tax if it's in the same state?

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:12 (ten years ago) link

i think ebay automatically adds the tax? come to think of it, i don't think i've ever sold a record on ebay to someone in NY -- i do it on discogs all the time though, but that's a different beast.

ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:14 (ten years ago) link

is it every state that requires that sales tax addition? definitely neither ebay nor discogs requires it, though ive had cali sellers on both insist...

#NOLO

69, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:32 (ten years ago) link

Texas has never had a state sales tax though, the republicans make sure of it, that's why all of our social programs are broke.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:37 (ten years ago) link

huh, that's very strange then...

ian, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 17:39 (ten years ago) link

Either way don't let them get away with squeezing those apparently unjustified shipping charges out of you...

Evan, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 20:13 (ten years ago) link

still been following that Tommy Johnson auction with interest. $16,800 and there are six hours left. watching the end of it will be my workday entertainment for this afternoon.

dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 15:16 (ten years ago) link

Yeah this is the most exciting record I've watched sell that I have no way of buying.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:29 (ten years ago) link

Oh, that reminds me of watching a Beatles record hit $18,000(?) a few years ago.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:31 (ten years ago) link

Here it is! This was fun to watch unfold also.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:36 (ten years ago) link

the tommy johnson thing actually fills me with extreme anxiety.
like, it's so common for people who don't know what they're doing to improperly pack 78s. i've never received anything broken, but i've heard tons of horror stories..

ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:49 (ten years ago) link

srsly if this thing breaks in transit it will be a national tragedy. day of mourning, hour of silent prayer type shit.

ian, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:51 (ten years ago) link

LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY

is what i would do.

plus, fuck a paypal fee with that kinda money involved.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:57 (ten years ago) link

probably just gonna be tefteller buying it anyway. he can come pick it up in his private zeppelin.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 16:58 (ten years ago) link

plus, lie and tell ebay that the sale didn't actually happen. fuck an ebay fee.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 17:00 (ten years ago) link

plus, tell the buyer its cash only. fuck the irs.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 17:01 (ten years ago) link

I'm sure the winning bidder will AT LEAST inquire about how it's being shipped. At this price I imagine that kind of conversation eventually ends up a phone call and many emails. They likely have picked up on the fact that this guy may be pretty clueless...

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 18:28 (ten years ago) link

i don't know clueless he is. yeah he was ready to take $4,000 but to be fair there is no standard to go by and $4,000 is gonna sound like a lot to someone. if i had found this in a box i would have known it was money but i never would have known how much money.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:16 (ten years ago) link

yeah to be fair he did start the auction at 500 bucks not 5. and he's at least conscious enough about condition to say "no" to all the people who are like "you need to play it once and record it," it's right to leave that up to the buyer imo.

dmr, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 19:40 (ten years ago) link

When someone offers me $4000 for something I'm not sure of the value of, I'd google it before accepting any offer.

nickn, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:00 (ten years ago) link

Yeah it's a clueless thing for someone to just accept an offer like that seemingly right off the bat. Saying it's because you "live close to where the artist is from" is especially flimsy as the only reasoning at that price even if you're a collector.

Evan, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:34 (ten years ago) link

that's the thing, he wouldn't find a price if he googled.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 20:40 (ten years ago) link

wow...
