if i have any beef with tefteller its just that he can get a hundred dollar buy it now price for something i'd be lucky to get 20 bucks for on ebay. cuzza his name. but hey that's not his fault. he's got the rep.

my friend adam once tried to bid on a sleepy john estes record that tefteller was selling on his site and got a really snide reponse back being like, "you're never going to win with a bid so low! you should bid more! the investment value of these records blag blh blah

I've never heard of that guy, but I have a Maddox Brothers and Rose record that he's asking $250 and a Reno and Smiley one for $200! I had no idea those king country records were worth money?

he's a bit crazzzzyy and definitely gets more money for some records than they're worth. also depends on the condition of course. 78 ppl are nuts about condition.. but less so with the post war stuff, i find.

Wow, watching this auction today and reading Tefteller's blog inspired me to put up my beloved VG- copy of Glass Houses on eBay today. Vinyl is the new stock market!

scott, if you're right then good for him. i just have a hard time believing that a dude who has the collector bug so bad he's shelling out $40k on a single 78 for his personal collection is really bringing in enough to survive. i mean, conservatively, how much do you think dude spends on his own collection every year? a few hundred k? more? you gotta sell the shit out of some records and be finding some really killer deals to even cover the cost of your personal collection much less rent/mortgage/food/beer/etc.

Sometimes I just get pissed off trying to figure out how anyone affords anything.

see, here's the thing though. big 78 collectors (people in their 50's and 60's and 70's) have most of what they need. they don't actually shell out tons of money every year on 78s. in a lot of cases the bulk of their collection was amassed decades ago and they got most of it for peanuts. when pat conte comes in my store i'm ecstatic when he finds stuff that he wants cuz he has almost everything that he wants. the stuff he buys now is just fun stuff that he's never heard. not big ticket things.

he's one of the few people in this country capable of giving someone $$$$$ for a decent pre-war collection. and he buys stuff like that every year. and when people want to sell collections like that they contact him. he does very well.

i did read an interview online where he said he mortgaged his house to buy a priceless collection of blues advertisement art. he uses the art to make calendars and t-shirts. he has a separate site for that. the interview is fun if you see it online.

Is he married? I feel like all of this would drive a wife crazy. At least the $37,100 record stuff.

he'll probably play it occasionally with a modern stylus that won't damage the grooves. he noted on a facebook group i follow that he's going to have it remastered by Richard Nevins (of Yazoo Records) for inclusion with his next blues calendar/cd combo that he puts out each year. Nevins does a great job with his remastering, he really does. I went to his place once and hung out in his studio and it's really quite impressive. i was actually supposed to go hang out there with some guys TODAY but i had to start my new job instead.

sellin' jazz to jazzers. i like when my pictures come out shiny.
