gotta lol geir (NickB), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 08:49 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's a stock copy as opposed to a promo (which are more common).

The b-side is 7 mins.

When I first got into the VU, the consencus was unsure this even existed. Thanks to the internet, we know it does.

Anyway, hens teeth, etc.

Mark G, Saturday, 12 October 2013 23:08 (ten years ago) link

i put a ten inch up and started it at 9.95. five day auction. it didn't sell. relisted it and it just sold for $109. this is a reminder that i should always relist. sometimes i don't bother and just throw things out into the store if they don't sell.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 13:46 (ten years ago) link

That's awesome! I'm about to do a big email sale, I think maybe 80 records. It's time for a purge.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 14:24 (ten years ago) link

I did that one time with a Bob Dylan album, it was on "Buy it now" for £4 for ages.

I re-started it as an auction at £4, it got an opening bid within 1 hour, and ended up going for £12.

Mark G, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 16:01 (ten years ago) link

JACOB ILL BE WAITING PATIENTLY! your purges are always interesting to me!!!

scott seward, Thursday, 17 October 2013 00:07 (ten years ago) link

that is 100% records I like, records I need, and records I didn't know I needed. would be hard to sell but that's also a lot of money.

a loving tribute to coworkers without personalities (los blue jeans), Saturday, 19 October 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link

you should email him and ask.

ian, Saturday, 19 October 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link

So I've decided on about 50 records to sell on ebay. I've spent today recording clips of some of the xian yacht rock folk dogshit that maybe I can get money for. I've graded and written descriptions of half of them. This is grueling work. I don't see how people make a living doing this.Would having in the description: "Featuring in the private press coffee table book 'Enjoy The Experience' be in bad form? I don't know how else to sell some of this christian crap.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:39 (ten years ago) link

Would having in the description: "Featuring in the private press coffee table book 'Enjoy The Experience' be in bad form?

no way, that's just straight up marketing. nothing wrong with it imo. (assuming the records you're talking about are actually in the book!)

dmr, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:45 (ten years ago) link

yeah I have a bunch of bad christian records with cool covers that are in the book. I guess the music has a "real people" vibe but it's unlistenable to my ears.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:48 (ten years ago) link

Tell you, I've decamped to Discogs' selling interface..

They have pics and tracklistings of most everything, whichever originating country the LP was pressed in, etc.

When you select the album to 'sell', they ask the condition and suggest a price for you.

Basically, how long it took to list one item on ebay (with pics and tracklisting), I could do 50 on Discogs.

For actual auctions of valuable stuff, i'd still use ebay though. But for 'buy-it-now', no.

Mark G, Friday, 25 October 2013 10:42 (ten years ago) link

agreed.

there's pretty much only a couple reasons to sell on ebay instead of discogs:

1. there's no listing for the item on discogs
2. it's a super rare item that hasn't had its "value" sorted already so you really need to auction it on ebay for max price/exposure
3. you have a dedicated list of many titles in the same genre/realm

moe handy, Friday, 25 October 2013 20:42 (ten years ago) link

re 3, potential buyers can click a category on your shop front and see all yr 'Christian Rock' eg on one page.

Mark G, Saturday, 26 October 2013 07:49 (ten years ago) link

yeah it's a shame you can't do lots on discogs

Q: So both the cover and record are in excellent condition instead of the VG+ rating from Ebay? Oct-27-13
A: I use the word "excellent" as a descriptive term, not as a grade. I use the old Goldmine record grading, and there was no Excellent grade using Goldmine standards once upon a time. Excellent is an Ebay-derived grade. VG+ to me means very close to Near Mint. And something that is close to Near Mint is in excellent condition. Goldmine does consider Excellent to be comparable to VG+ now though: http://www.goldminemag.com/collector-resources/record-grading-101/2. I can't help but think of 78 rpm record grading when I see the grade E or E+ though. Anyway, by current Goldmine standards this record is either VG+ or Excellent. But I was not grading the record as excellent. Merely mentioning that it is in excellent shape. If you are uncomfortable with the word excellent in my description, feel free to change the word to "great" or "wonderful" in your head if it helps. Thanks for the question!

scott seward, Sunday, 27 October 2013 12:08 (ten years ago) link

lol

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 00:17 (ten years ago) link

i actually had a guy really chew me out recently cuz a cover i graded as VG+ had a name written on the back. a small name. see, i don't know why, but i do consider ex to be seprarate from VG+. i dunno why. always have, even before i started collecting 78s.

i lost a lot of Pope's Arkansas Mountaineers 78s on ebay today. All three of their records in VG/VG+ condition - i.e. some wear, surface noise, maybe some distressed grooves. went for $92. i bid $91. they were at $35 til the last minute.

so, as a consolation, i am buying some french-canadian fiddle 78s from a friend of mine who lives up there. hurray.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 00:20 (ten years ago) link

Do you guy have countries you do not ship to or accept bids from?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:03 (ten years ago) link

i dont -- i havent had any bad experiences yet. i mention in my description that i "may require insurance/registration to some countries," but i havent had to exercise that yet.

69, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:05 (ten years ago) link

i've had bad experiences shipping to italy and greece. i'll still do it, but i require insurance for any overseas order over $30 now.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:11 (ten years ago) link

Recently I sold a guy in sweden a rare record and when filling out the customs form I put down $115 as the value of the record. It was sent priority with everything else. But when the guy went to pick up the record, he had to pay $52 for a custom's tax! I didn't know about this, and dude wasn't happy with me. He said to never put a value over $10 on a package because of this. Has anybody else experience anything like this?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link

i've had people ask me to not put the real value on a package, but then if you send it with an insured value of $10 then yer fucked if something happens... it's a very tricky thing. not all countries have the same import duties of course, and i don't know what the standard is.

i just shipped a box of five records to germany and put the value as $120, which was the total before shipping. i wonder if the guy will be pissed off.

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:17 (ten years ago) link

I'm also conflicted about grading after reading Scott's post above. I was thinking of using EX since I don't want to use NM unless something is sealed and no dings ,shrink completely intact etc.. I've always though VG+ is a lesser grading than EX, has light scuffs, plays with little surface noise, cover has mild wear, but EX is closer to NM almost mint. But is this a made up grading?

JacobSanders, Monday, 28 October 2013 19:23 (ten years ago) link

Yeah the customs stuff is weird. I've had ones where I put the real value but was asked to mark it as "gift" rather than "goods" but I'm sure every country is different on those rules.

dmr, Monday, 28 October 2013 20:06 (ten years ago) link

He said to never put a value over $10 on a package because of this.

I guess if someone asked me to do this I would agree to it but tell them if the record gets lost they're SOL because of the insurance implications? Like, if they want to save money on customs then the burden's on them.

dmr, Monday, 28 October 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

ian, Monday, 28 October 2013 20:35 (ten years ago) link

i totally sell stuff that other people would list as near mint as vg+. but i don't care. i want people to be really happy when they get a record from me. and i feel like i'm covered that way. i do use the excellent grade sometimes when i have stuff that is pretty much unplayed/like new. i feel like near mint is almost a myth. i would have to listen to every record i sell very closely for me to call it near mint. i'd rather be safe than sorry. and i get repeat business as a result.

scott seward, Monday, 28 October 2013 22:54 (ten years ago) link

i used excellent for this. anyone else would have said near mint. i don't know how much more i would have made.
