I bought mine at standard used LP prices for that store, albeit 10 years ago.

three months pass...

i really fucking hate coming in after a few days off to find that [GUY @ WORK I HATE] has mis-priced a bunch of shit in my absence. This time it was gratuitously overpricing james bond soundtracks. ugh. makes me so mad.

hit him with a stick.

scott seward, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

does this guy also do your Facebook page? because I remember seeing an "OMG all these James Bond soundtracks came in" post over the weekend, maybe he was just super enthusiastic

dmr, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

he sometimes does facebook stuff yeah.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

Well, at least mispricing too high means you still have the records..

Mark G, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 06:23 (eleven years ago) link

yes i'm sure a record store is happy they didn't sell some records

like a sunrise (electricsound), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 06:46 (eleven years ago) link

Happier than selling them for quarter price, or something..

Mark G, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:29 (eleven years ago) link

it's the lesser of two evils i guess. but i just don't like that someone else's mistakes reflect badly on me.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

What did he charge?

Evan, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

The store I used to work at there was someone who had no knowledge of music and is just there for the job, basically priced everything to sell immediately on Amazon. So our actual visiting customers generally would have only the shitty records that went for way less online in stock, along with overpriced shit that we were forced to just about match prices with online and end up sitting on forever (until 6 month price adjustments). Drove me kind of crazy, since any good fresh used inventory that just came in would be 60% gone the next day due to amazon sales.

Evan, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

i think this guy kinda just looks at discogs and chooses a number? like, i don't care that some dude sold octopussy for 10 pounds in the UK, that does not mean it's a $15 record here.

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah an international sale certainly does not reflect local demand. Things can go for all sorts of wonky prices globally.

Evan, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:37 (eleven years ago) link

did you price the disco records, ian? man, i would kill to be able to sell 40 dollar disco singles in my store. only the japanese will buy pricey 12 inches from me. and they don't come around that frequently.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

i didn't price the disco stuff -- that is my man eric. but yeah, there are a lot of dj's in new york! and lots of japanese tourists too. and the french, and sometimes the english..

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

we bought 17 crates yesterdaty

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

if you get rare disco do you just throw it up on ebay? do you not get rare disco?

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 19:26 (eleven years ago) link

when we get good disco records in it tends to be a pretty big deal. people buy a lot so they haggle a little and you give them a break and everyone's happy.

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

i'm starting to think i should bump the price of john prine's first record up to $6. it sells so fast at $5.

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

oh yeah no i know you can sell good disco in new york. if you can't sell it there...

i just don't get that kind of traffic. i end up keeping stuff. or i'll ebay it or put it on discogs. or keep it in the store for 6 months until a japanese dealer buys it.

i've put 8 or even 10 on first john prine for really nice copies. like, perfect copies. but mostly 6 or 7.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

i also need more dedicated space for 12 inches. i need more shelves. tons of stuff i don't even put out because i don't have the room for it. if i build it they will come.

scott seward, Thursday, 16 August 2012 20:48 (eleven years ago) link

ugh i am drowning in crappy country records over here. the bottom 20% of the huge collection i bought last year. stuff that's been sitting around at $3-4. marking it all down to a buck, which is the point at which i can take stuff home for free. how many bluegrass & late-seventies honky tonk records do i need?

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 16 August 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

love to come in and see a used copy of a record on the wall for $25 when we have it new & sealed for $22.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link

or how about $20 on a used Jon Spencer record that's currently in print for $14?

Nik Raicevic's HEAD LP? Trying to figure out what kind of offer to make on a dimply, maybe VG at best copy.

Bob Djukic is someone who for some unbelievable and unknown reason gets tons and tons and tons of money for his records on ebay -- there are various theories as to why including his lavish descriptions, huge number of auctions going up at once, and potential shill-bidding conspiracy theories. my pet theory is that his customers are all wealthy russians.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

You weren't kidding http://www.ebay.com/csc/bobdjukic/m.html?_ipg=&_from=&_nkw=&_armrs=1&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

Evan, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that guy is unreal. some people really do have rabid followings though. not as extreme as that guy mostly. but there are people who swear by certain sellers and will pay way more for their stuff. those regular first pressing prices are ridinkulous though. crazy people prices.

scott seward, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:16 (eleven years ago) link

like those Love albums. i wouldn't get anywhere near those prices if i put the same copies up.

don't even ask me about the sealed jesus christ superstar. that defies all logic and sense.

honestly though the long-ass anal descriptions pay off. there are sharper image hot stamper rich dudes who just want to feel like they're buying "the best". you know? and hey it works.

what do you think a good price would be for an original (US) XTC gig poster from 1980? 50 bucks?

los blue jeans, Friday, 19 October 2012 22:42 (eleven years ago) link

also some fliers: 9:30 club 1985, Wax Museum (DC) 1982, PIL 1982, "new wave night" 1980, ramones 1985, and a couple of mimeo zines?

The XTC poster is printed on glossy cardstock (one color) but I was thinking about $5 each for the fliers since they are basically photocopies

Lineup at the Wax Museum: Tommy Keene / Richard Thompson, Danny O'Keefe and Chris Smither / Commander Cody / Cris Williamson Plus Tret Fure & Vicki Randle / Ramones / Touchstone featuring Chick Corea & Paco DeLucia / The Producers / Monarch / The Roches / Iggy Pop plus Nash the Slash / Crystal Ship A Renaissance Of The Doors Plus The Liquid Light Show / Chuck Mangione and His Quartet / Jonathan Edwards and Friends with Special Guest Robert Hunter / Rosanne Cash / Blotto / Willie Dixon & John Lee Hooker

i would like a chris smither flier.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 20 October 2012 04:59 (eleven years ago) link

the "chris smither" part takes up about 1 x 1/2 inches of the flier- but if you want it stop by my table

what's a good price for an original VU & Nico LP (stereo) -- banana is intact (just a cut right under the stem) -- plays VG (crackly)?

vinyljunkie, Thursday, 7 February 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

$50? $60? then look for a clean bananaless copy, sell the bananaless cover w the VG record for $20 or something, and BAM you gotta tight keeper copy.

what about these 4 lomax ballad hunter library of congress records i have. do i just slap 20 bucks on them or should i ebay? none for sale on ebay which is a good sign.

scott seward, Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:10 (ten years ago) link

those ballad hunter records are rare but i don't think they're particularly desirable.. i bought my complete set for $50.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Sunday, 7 July 2013 03:15 (ten years ago) link

ended up cracking the seal on the bare knuckles LP. inner sleeve and label both giveaways that it's the reissue. oh well.
