i like all the psych records. even the ones i haven't heard. i started a thread once on the psych records on mainstream. they put out a lot of stuff. jazz-wise? i'd have to check.

i was just playing homecoming by art farmer today. hahaha! forgot already. it's okay...

oh yeah, i forgot about the hadley caliman record.

the one relative dud i can think of on the jazz tip was bud powell - ups & downs. the recording quality is pretty shit.

^^^^ that one's good. has anyone heard The Growing Concern? I feel like they have a track on Nuggets or something

dmr, Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:30 (fourteen years ago) link

stole that record from my mom. they have an amazing song on nuggets. it's the nuge!

when Scorpio (had to be them, right?) started reissuing all the psych stuff, I attempted to collect it all, but sheesh there are some stinkers in there. I mean do I really need to pick up the 'Jellybean Bandits' LP? But a couple real good ones, yeah Superfine Dandelion is pretty cool and I believe that Growing Concern one was decent. But, like, Bohemian Vendetta? pretty bad...

really, the best records I've heard from the psych dept are the ones everyone knows -- for a reason, I guess -- the Amboy Dukes and Big Brother.

I just relistened to all three Amboy Dukes records a month or so ago (which I actually have on CD -- Repertoire issues, for the bonus tracks.) something I do every couple of years. Only this time, they really hit me hard. Man, that band was SO GOOD. and they have all-time classic psych tracks, I'm not even talking about "Journey" or "Baby, Please Don't Go". but like "The Lovely Lady" from the first s/t lp, which sounds like a West Coast band like the Charlatans or something at their trippiest. And the instrumentals "Scottish Tea" from the 2nd lp and "Migration" from the 3rd LP. Tedly knew how to take you to a higher plane, man....

If I Were A Rich Man...I Would Put Out Deluxe Vinyl Reissues Of All Those Psych Records On The Mainstream Label So That They Weren't All 100 Dollars Anymore For A Stinky Used Copy

this one is actually pretty rad -

got turned onto it via the track "Mr. Fear" which closes out that great 'Dr. Delay' psych mix
