i hate to be all rockist but i gotta go beatles, stones, byrds. but i love the byrds. i dunno, when i'm listening to byrds they are definitely bestest. i definitely love byrds on vinyl more than a lot of stones on vinyl. but good beatles vinyl, man, that shit is tight. they were totally on heavy drugs and shit.

i definitely have more warmth in my heart for byrds too. it's weird. but stones man they made so many friggin' great songs. like a zillion.

plus, why is this on ilovevinyl and not noize board.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 3 February 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

and like.. i love the stones. and the beatles. tons and tons. but the byrds, for me, are the BEST.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 3 February 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago) link

listen to a nice pressing of street fighting man sometime. holy shit that shit is insane. and that's just one song. those drums are huge. get a first press of that. knocks me out.

scott seward, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

that's sweet. lots of people love the byrds best. my friend russell collects every byrds thing ever.

scott seward, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

kinks>

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 3 February 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

i take it back about stones vinyl. a nice copy of let it bleed....nice. you gotta find the right copies of stones records. they aren't all created equal. any 60's byrds record in nice shape is gonna sound nice. cheap-ass beatles is still beatles. stones weren't as treated as good as they should have been given who they were. especially here.

scott seward, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

i do not like the kinks except for a few songs here & there, idk what it is about me. prefer the troggs.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 3 February 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago) link

since i opened my shop i've gotten so many different copies of klassic rock records and if anything i appreciate them more now than ever. not like they need any more appeciating, but jesus the stuff is just incredible to me. as a lover of sound its a constant eye opener. definitely played more stones in the last three years than i probably ever have. this is also when i find myself wondering how anyone listens to the stuff on cd. then again i don't think i've ever heard a stones cd. maybe they are wonderful. but i can't be bothered to try.

scott seward, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

maybe when you are older it will hit you. i don't know. the kinks were amazing and the troggs are not in the same league.

scott seward, Friday, 3 February 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago) link

I love the Byrds the best but also I have a super nice copy of High Tide and Green Grass and I tell you what, Get Off Of My Cloud fucking slays me and that intro just sounds like the best thing ever.

Phibes Kartel (NickB), Friday, 3 February 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

I got to go with Stones>Byrds>Beatles because like scott said Street Fighting Man is so massive along with so many other Stones songs, even on a 45. Street Fighting Man is my favorite driving song, I crank it really loud and drive really fast=I feel like a bad ass. I do love the Byrds and they have probably influenced my taste in music more than any other band, hearing sweetheart of the rodeo for the first time was a big deal. I can't even really listen to the Beatles anymore, I mean I can, but I don't really listen anymore, not with the same ears I used to.

that is

STICKY FINGERS>VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY>SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO>REVOLVER

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Sunday, 5 February 2012 05:44 (twelve years ago) link

I think I can go with that if you exchange sweetheart for village green, but even the way it is, is kind of perfect.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 5 February 2012 06:25 (twelve years ago) link

i agree with all of ian's opinions in this thread

buzza, Sunday, 5 February 2012 07:43 (twelve years ago) link

i love all threeeeee

how can a sane person hate the beatles
fucking stones man,
and then the byrds

i just warmed up to the byrds pretty recently, a few years ago, but they're untouchable

anyways,<3 all 3

Z S, Sunday, 5 February 2012 08:41 (twelve years ago) link

how can a sane person hate the beatles

let us not ask this question

anyway for me

STONES>BYRDS>>>BEATLES

Byrds maybe even closer allowing for solo work, esp. Gene Clark's

never really gotten excited about the Kinks or been bothered to dig

beatles > kinks > byrds > stones

iatee, Sunday, 5 February 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Don't understand how you could put the stones at the end of this list. Myabe the Stones had problems recording a really solid album from start to finish, but those singles and there are just so many of them. They played everything from blues, psych, country rock, chamber pop, to a bastardization of all of those. The more I think about this, Sticky Fingers is probably not the best example of a solid stones record. Beggars Banquet or Let It Bleed. But the Byrds could rock as well as pick, I mean it's hard to beat the Byrds line-up, and all of those side projects. Nashville West, Dillard & Clark and all of those solo records. I don't have anything bad to say about the Beatles, just don't have have anything at all to say about them.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 5 February 2012 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

All three (or four) are pretty spectacular if you establish the right window for each one, right? I could put the names of their ten best songs into three (or four) hats, draw one from each, and come up with every possible permutation for those arrows.

BYRDS > BEATLES > WHO > STONES > DEAD > SPRINGFIELD

tylerw, Monday, 6 February 2012 17:59 (twelve years ago) link

Confession I still haven't heard Moby Grape, but I'd put the Dead before the Beatles. Small Faces right behind the dead. I've come to like the Dead and the second Mighty Baby record I just got. A JUG OF LOVE!!!!!

JacobSanders, Monday, 6 February 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

jug of love is great! and i don't like the who much.

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link

scott seward, Monday, 6 February 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

never that into the pretty things, though i do prefer their early r&b/beat/garage material to their psych records.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 6 February 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link

maybe it's time to relisten to the pretty things.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 6 February 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link

also jacob you need to grab Moby Grape '69 and Truly Fine Citizen--those albums are right up yer alley. and the first record. WOW never did much for me.

(except having an awesome cover.)

I keep waiting to find clean copies of those Moby Grape records for a few dollars. The Pretty Things are the nastiest of the bunch and I like them for that.
