An all-time favorite!

Evan, Monday, 6 January 2014 21:54 (ten years ago) link

me too, used to have an Ajax vinyl copy that I traded in for a Guernica CD version probably in the late 90's, now I have it on LP again. I am kind of an Unrest completist, god help me.

She also has a storage unit with more records I'm going to look at this weekend. I found these for a dollar each!

Long time since confession. Here's today's burden.

Ed Kelly Ensemble - Music from the Black Museum
Software - Electronic-Universe
Codona - on the spine it says "Collin Walcott/Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos," so maybe that's the title
Maceo Merriweather - Big Maceo Volume One
Little Brother Montgomery - Farro Street Jive (I'm just realizing this is electronically reprocessed stereo; I hope it still sounds good)
The Last Poets - This Is Madness (orig.)
various - Voice of the Computer
Gino Soccio - Face to Face (cheap dupe)
Leo Kottke - s/t?
Joh Abercrombie - Timeless
Elvin Jones - The Prime Element
Baby Boy Warren - s/t (I think this is sort of a boot, but it's a really nice boot. I guess it doesn't matter if the music is in the public domain.)
Lonnie Hewitt - Keepin' It Together
Le Quatour de Saxophones - Double Messieus
Charlie Rouse/Paul Quinchette - The Chase Is On
Horacee Arnold - Tales of the Exonerated Flea
Stomu Yamash'ta - the title is maybe Hans Werner Henze/Peter Maxwell Davies/Toru Takemitsu?
Nana vasconcelos - Saudades
Jon Appleton - The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton
Percy Sledge - Any Day Now
Mary Lou Williams - Zoning (dupe, but it's so good that it's worth it just in case)
Muhal Richard Abrams - Things to Come from Those Now Gone
Mal Waldron - Plays the Blues
David Earle Johnson/Jan Hammer/John Abercrombie - The Midweek Blues
Jan Hammer - The First Seven Days
Roosevelt Sykes - Raining in My Heart
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Special Occasion
Steve Lacy - Raps
Kool & the Gang - Jazz
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - What Love Has Joined Together
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - A Pocket Full of Miracles
Jackie Wilson - I Get the Sweetest Feeling
Elvin Jones - Genesis
Yusef Lateef - 10 Years Hence
Angela Davis - Soul and Soledad
The Salsoul Orchestra - Nice 'n' Naasty
Earth, Wind & Fire - Another Time

bamcquern, Monday, 20 January 2014 05:56 (ten years ago) link

oh, that's "Double Messieurs," obviously

bamcquern, Monday, 20 January 2014 05:57 (ten years ago) link

Codona - on the spine it says "Collin Walcott/Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos," so maybe that's the title

there are three of these, I think 2 & 3 are numbered

Ed Kelly Ensemble - Music from the Black Museum

GREAT RECORD

69, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 18:02 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, it's great, unostentatious, a lot of second coming of Monk stuff, but it has more surface noise than the look of it would suggest, so I'm thinking of returning it for credit. :(

bamcquern, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 20:51 (ten years ago) link

you should look for ED KELLY & FRIEND if you dont already have it. "FRIEND" is pharoah sanders, who was unable to appear in the title or front cover due to some arista issues?

69, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:12 (ten years ago) link

Jon Appleton - The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton

^^^ great, weird record

ian, Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:42 (ten years ago) link

what was your phrase, bryce, "John Oswald eat your heart out?"

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Tuesday, 21 January 2014 22:44 (ten years ago) link

That's me with the one-liners.

For anyone wondering about "electronically reprocessed Folkways records, I think they sound fine.

I don't have that Ed Kelly record, Pete. I'll keep a look out for it.

been meaning to revisit feats don't fail me now: long, long time since i last heard it, but remember it as being really good & le goudron is ace (don't think i've ever heard the flipside)

eagerly awaiting the arrival of the beefheart sun zoom spark box!

no lime tangier, Monday, 17 November 2014 15:59 (nine years ago) link

Feats Don't Fail Me Now is all killer, no filler

Sun Zoom Spark box is useless to me since I have all those Spotlight Kid Sessions from DIME. Super disappointing that they left "Funeral Hill" off of that 4th disc. I guess if the remasters are really well done I might look for it used.

Some cool stuff there sleeve, quite a few I'm coveting from over here (No Trend, Really Red, Poison Girls, would like to get the Damned and Wire on vinyl one day, just to begin with, and I'm sure the Dead C, Jad Fair, Slovenly etc are probably up my street too). I do have the Spizzoil 7" though.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:10 (nine years ago) link

take the toys from the boys will always be my fave poison girls song. on that EP.

also, dozen dead roses probably my fave no trend song.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

the dead c should be up everyone's street :-) have fond memories of seeing them play in port chalmers over the years.

never had decals on anything but cdr so that's the one i'm most hyped about hearing, also means i can retire my warped clear spot (so glad i pre-ordered this before the price doubled)

no lime tangier, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

Oh yeah I've seen the Dead C live and have several of their albums, just not that one.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:39 (nine years ago) link

mac from siltbreeze (r.i.p.) gave me a copy of clyma years ago. i played it once. and then years later i sold it. and that's my sad tale. i've never listened to dead c much. i'm not supposed to admit that. but there you have it. i listen to lots of other stuff though.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:50 (nine years ago) link

what's on the 'tentative power' ep?

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 16:54 (nine years ago) link

the Xpressway "Hell Is Not Love"/"Bone" single, the Forced Exposure single, and a couple of other tracks iirc

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

I really want Ba Da Bing to reissue Operation of The Sonne, that's the only other "classic" era one that I need

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

oh, that FE single was great - it kind of spoilt the Dead C for me thereafter. that version of 'power' is terrific!

i finally got a copy of monoshock's walk to the fire on vinyl. double vinyl. i always wanted that one. labelmates with my brother at the time. blackjack records.

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

I wish I still had that, I think I sold it in the 90's

sleeve, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:12 (nine years ago) link

speaking of noisy guitars...

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:12 (nine years ago) link

blackjack were the crew who put out liquorball amirite?

yup

scott seward, Monday, 17 November 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

the blackjack guy was in monoshock.

yeah me too! all my underground 7"s gone in one big clear out for £££ (including a liquorball single on glow-in-the-dark vinyl which was just so good). kills me thinking about it :(

xp oh right that figures

john wahey (NickB), Monday, 17 November 2014 17:16 (nine years ago) link

i think when they mastered the tentative power stuff it got slightly sped up in the process didn't it? i remember the guitars ended up sounding kind of balalaika like. got rid of mine since i already had most of it on 7" and clyma isn't too hard to find here. sometimes think operation of the sonne is my favourite dead c.

nice!

I got a good one:

Michael Hurley - Blue Navigator

Media Condition: Near Mint (NM or M-)
Sleeve Condition: Good Plus (G+)
Disc is great. Sleeve is tough to grade in that its in great condition, but there is a strip of black spray paint about 1/4 inch wide running down the left and bottom sides of the front of the jacket.

YES PLEASE

whoa! that's the super rare one, right? <3 <3 <3 hurley

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

yep, I never ever see it

I have a homemade CDR of it that I bought from Hurley at a gig, but I suspect his ripping gear is not exactly high end. still pissed at Mississippi for reissuing it on 8-track only.

I also scored his first two 7" singles from the 90's recently, just a few things left on the wantlist
