There comes a time when man must decide--do I take that pack of cigarettes that I was going to give to the homeless out of my gym bag and smoke one, or do I go to bed?
Now is that time for this man.

dang, i didn't get the cingular reference until you guys mentioned it. i was assuming it was references to the corner bars in most 'hoods. my old boss told me a story about him being a kid in the '50s and walking two blocks from his relatives house to his house with his dad on xmas eve and his dad hit every corner tavern for a shot and a beer. there were two intersections that had four bars on them on the way home. you don't have that type of saturation in as many places anymore.

Jeff, we should play tennis sometime. I am really bad. We have one metal racket and one wood racket, so when Sarah and I play I have to use the wood racket and it sucks.

It took me a while, but I finally got the thread title's reference. I had assumed it was referring to actual bars.
I guess there's back story to it that I missed during my hilxatus, but it kind of skeeves me to have a corporate slogan as our thread title (despite being ILX's resident viral marketer). Sort of like how it skeeves me when people repeat commercial punch lines as their main source of jokes in social situations.

also i have no shame about not 'getting' the thread title, as i always proudly mute commercials
for the most part, shame (in general) can suck it
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:46 (sixteen years ago) link
I have been sneezing like CRAZY today. It's been bad over the past week, but today has been the worst.

Genuine speaks to me. Oh, that sexy, sexy voice. (If only I could find a gif of amy sedaris doing a jerri smirk)

John, I think you would have liked being at the roller rink back in the day, listening to great pop tunes at top volume while the disco ball turned and colored lights scattered across the floor...
― KitCat, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 13:47 (sixteen years ago) link
Overheard in the hallway outside my office just now: "...tiny Asian couple..."
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:19 (sixteen years ago) link
I thought the thread title was SUBVERTING the CORPORATE PARADIGM. Which I think is also a commercial....
― Laurel, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:22 (sixteen years ago) link
And we do meet up in bars a lot.
― dan m, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link
I didn't catch the celly reference either. It just makes me think of drinkin'.
I was just given this accounting project which sounded huge and made me grit my teeth as I accepted it a la chloe: http://www.eparsa.fr/webredactions/images/muzik%20mars/Mary%20Lynn%20Rajskub.jpg
Then I got to work on it and, as per the usual, it turns out it's supereasy and almost kind of even... fun.

I sure wish the Cubs game tonight wasn't: a) starting at 9 p.m. central time. b) only being broadcast on TBS.

yah srsly, exclusive rights to playoff games, so they can't schedule them against each other: teh suck
― kenan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:53 (sixteen years ago) link
That's lame.
Nick, I just sent you a rather long, informative email about the FAFSA.
― KitCat, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 14:55 (sixteen years ago) link
I would even consider going to watch the game in a bar if I didn't have to wake up so f'in' early.

For your pleasure: Ralph Maccio and Steve Vai in a guitar duel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2FE4GE1QQ8

IIRC Steve Vai is playing an emissary of the devil in that scene?
― n/a, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:11 (sixteen years ago) link
Brown finally returns to the crossroads with Eugene in hope of breaking off the deal when he also bartered his soul. There, speaking out of turn, Eugene offers to try to win Brown's soul back in a head-cutting duel with any guitar player of the Devil's choice. Scratch chooses Jack Butler (played by Steve Vai), a modern blues-metal man who has also sold his soul for musical abilities. After a blistering guitar duel, Eugene eventually manages to incorporate the classical training he received at Juilliard and wins the challenge.

Good news! I have a new computer at work and it's ridiculously fast. And the monitor is like 17" across. Crazy.
Bad news! My DSL won't be set up at home until Oct. 12.

Tremendo Duelo de Guitarras!!
Also didn't know what the thread title was all about, either. I'm not all het up about coopting a corporate slogan, but maybe that's because I haven't seen the commercial. Chicago: I'm Lovin' It would be kind of gross, I guess. Although we did use that anti-herpes ad.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:22 (sixteen years ago) link
Steve Vai is awesome. In the spirit of the above clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erE8WTngaAY

Holy crap, listen to his right foot at the beginning of his solo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFnDXBUaCQg
Also, the Bruce Lee stuff in the interview is in surprisingly bad taste!

Jordan, why would he be playing with his snare angled away from him (as seen in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgeX9iYOFSQ&mode=related&search=)? Is there an advantage to that?
― n/a, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link
This one is pretty great too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwJAAlXomVk&mode=related&search=
― n/a, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link
It makes sense when you're playing traditional grip, the snare lines up with the angle of your left hand. Actually, from playing brass band snare I've gotten used to it being angled away like that.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't understand the rock guys who have the snare at a steep angle towards them, it makes it really hard for me to hit rimshots (unless the snare is raised up super-high).

does anyone know why my itunes gift card balance went from $26 to $14 without a purchase? Granted, I haven't used it in ages but $12 is ridiculous.
― sweet tater, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:11 (sixteen years ago) link
Did you buy anything from the iTunes store in the interim? The store can "remember" your gift card in the system, so if you bought something else, it might have taken it from the gift card even if you didn't re-enter the gift cart code.
― n/a, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link
nope.
― sweet tater, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:13 (sixteen years ago) link
Yes! I just listened to it... It was poignant.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:15 (sixteen years ago) link
They expire 2 years from date of issue. Maybe in the interum the total gradually decreases??
― KitCat, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:16 (sixteen years ago) link
That doesn't seem right.
― n/a, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 16:18 (sixteen years ago) link
A gift card is supposed to be basically be money, since someone paid for it. They can't just take away your money for no reason. Something must have gotten charged to it somehow.
