this is kinda a weird story - I mean, I'm not saying the dude should have been beaten up (obviously that's ridiculous) but dude is a young latino guy, playing a street thug, and he doesn't know norteno gang colors/territory? wtf

there's been a bunch of dumb gang shit lately. thanks for releasing all those prisoners, CA budget battle!

fucking republicans.

the taint of Macca is strong (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 October 2009 20:54 (fourteen years ago) link

er isn't a lot of the prisoner release stuff due to a court decision and vehemently opposed by the pubbies?

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 9 October 2009 21:00 (fourteen years ago) link

although I don't doubt that budget concerns come into play with a lot of frequent early releases, maybe the the guy involved with the shooting at 24th/shotwell the other weekend.

I believe both are true (releasing 40k prisoners was part of der Governator's budget reconciliation plan)

[24th/shotwell

this was a Papa Potrero's, 1 block from my house. Perps were 20 and 16, victims were 40-something and 26. Perps were picked up within minutes, whole thing is caught on multiple videocameras. those dudes' lives are ruined.

also 24th and Potrero, not Shotwell

CA budget releasing prisoners & encouraging cops to give me arguable tickets

xpost the papa potreros shooting was supposed to be retaliatory for the one at shotwell. apparently it's a norteno on norteno thing. the guys (inc. the 'guy' I was referring to above) were celebrating a GED in a limo and got rowdy with some other faction, shots were fired etc. the 'other faction' are the ones who I think were hit at the pizza place on sunday

xp ive recently seen dudes arguing outside guadalajara at 24&shot on friday nights too FWIW

pretty ugly. hoping the heavy police presence & change in weather kinda kills this.

lou reed scott walker monks niagra (chinavision!), Friday, 9 October 2009 21:07 (fourteen years ago) link

oh I thought the Shotwell thing was a couple blocks further north, not on 24th...? (some guy nicknamed "monster"?)

Although this would explain the impromptu RIP shrine at Shotwell/24th (which was being watched over by a paddywagon most of last week)

i know! the time i feel luckiest not to have a car is on days like this. my commute was wet, but quick and with way less people than usual packing the train.

"why? so you can drive downtown in the rain during commuting hours? are you fucking insane?"

Ha ha ha! And still have to walk just as far in the rain unless he likes spending $30+/day, if your bldg has a garage.

Hearing SFers whinge about the rain never fails to make me chortle. We barely have ANY "real" weather so a couple of inches of rain makes us feel positively ALIVE!

Listening to my building creak in the wind is a little unsettling, though.

paper grocery bags are convenient for putting all the mixed paper recycling in.

sarahel, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:07 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah it could be a real pain for many people. for me, I try to use my little ultra-compact reusable whenever possible, and it works for most types of groceries. I found this site while looking around for more options: http://www.reusablebags.com/

I don't think it's a bad thing, but I can totally see it pissing a lot of people off. It basically means people will have to buy their own bags and reuse them. To me it's worth it. It's a small step toward reducing waste, cutting down less trees, and it's inevitable anyway.

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:11 (fourteen years ago) link

We use paper bags for our recycling as well. Though the same store that we get most of them from also sells those biobags which are on that site I just linked. they are surprisingly sturdy, too.

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:12 (fourteen years ago) link

there are tons and tons of reusable bag options most of them are very cheap

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

and last quite awhile. some are even compostable!

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I bring a reusable bag to the grocery store most of the time, and because I'm usually only getting a few things at a time, it works out. But sometimes I get groceries on the way home from work, or am getting more stuff than I have reusable bags, or realize I need to get something from the store in the middle of a bunch of other errands. This legislation - along with a bunch of other SF laws - just seems to assume a certain lifestyle that often is associated with affluent people.

sarahel, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 19:17 (fourteen years ago) link
