Strange Days wasn't bad.

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i think i remember strange days but i think i am conflating it with the television miniseries "wild palms" for some reason

bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i actually just have a vague blur memory of liam neeson and halle berry running around in times square and some kind of video helmet

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:14 (sixteen years ago) link

erm, Ralph Fiennes

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link

haha, and, erm, Angela Bassett

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago) link

apparently all white people AND all black people look alike to me

Hurting 2, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:17 (sixteen years ago) link

the 90s was actually a good decade for sci-fi miniseries actually. maybe.

bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:18 (sixteen years ago) link

the 90s was? the 90s were

bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 02:22 (sixteen years ago) link

ian, Friday, 28 March 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

city of lost children was pretty tight but kind of bummed me out IIRC.

ian, Friday, 28 March 2008 03:26 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't believe people are non-jokingly saying they liked Johnny Mnemonic.

James Morrison, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:31 (sixteen years ago) link

this poll belongs to Verhoeven

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Starship Troopers and Total Recall <3<3<3

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:38 (sixteen years ago) link

the two Verhoevens vs. 12 Monkeys vs. Escape from L.A. (which isn't great but has one of the best endings ever)

Eric H., Friday, 28 March 2008 05:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't believe people are non-jokingly saying they liked Johnny Mnemonic.

that's because you live on planet boring and we live on planet awesome. it's expected.

El Tomboto, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:45 (sixteen years ago) link

seriously

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw it with my friend on opening day and we were the only people in the theater.

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I WANT MY SHIRTS LAUNDERED

El Tomboto, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i want a 10,000 dollar hooker!

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:52 (sixteen years ago) link

man, i need to do some serious catching up on some flicks

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 05:53 (sixteen years ago) link

How about The Truman Show?

-- Eazy, Friday, March 28, 2008 12:37 AM (5 hours ago) Bookmark Link

Man, looking back at it The Matrix really seems like the culmination of a decade's worth of failed attempts by Hollywood to profitably exploit the 90's internet/virtual reality/video game/Silicon Valley/Doom/cyberpunk/hacker zeitgeist.

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 06:06 (sixteen years ago) link

"so all we have to do is add kung fu and stoner philosophy to the mix and THEN they'll actually come to see the movie! we can even use Keanu again"

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 06:10 (sixteen years ago) link

(That said, the first Matrix was pretty bitchin')

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

A friend once said of Sphere that it was more like two spheres, pressed together, that you sit on.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i liked the book. the movie is so ugly-looking and boring.

latebloomer, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:18 (sixteen years ago) link

TWO WEEKS

sexyDancer, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Flatliners freaked me out proper.

blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:22 (sixteen years ago) link

altho should I be surprised Morbz is no fan of Starship Troopers?

I appreciated what it was trying to do, but after the first hour seeing bad actor-models torn apart by insects just loses its novelty. But I did like the scene where Casper von Dien gets whipped.

eXistenZ is not camp...at least not in the way that, say, Mommie Dearest or Showgirls is camp

which is, comedy-substitute for people who don't particularly like actual comedy (like the admirable Eric H).

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

T2 would've had my vote. Might throw 12 Monkeys a bone although I've only seen it once.

ledge, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:27 (sixteen years ago) link

the endings SUCKS

blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Dark City is probably the #1 'woah this is far better than i thought it was gonna be' here.

blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i voted TOTAL RECALL because it's awesome.

I saw Strange Days for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It is too long. Fiennes is pretty great in it though.

caek, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i remember the first time i saw huge posters for Total Recall on the platform of Tottenham Court Road tube station. brilliant design, got a real 'wow wtf is that' sense of excitement from them.

blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

If you don't think Female Trouble is funny, we really have nothing to talk about.

Eric H., Friday, 28 March 2008 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i always confuse species and mimic.

Jordan, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:34 (sixteen years ago) link

maybe Tremors should've been in - it's meant to be good isn't it?

blueski, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:35 (sixteen years ago) link

xp: EH, I like me some comedy-substitute too, prime Waters included! (and FT is my fave, a masterpiece; it's terrifically funny but in a non-comedy-crafted way)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Tremors is on the 80s list.

Duane Barry, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:37 (sixteen years ago) link

has anyone actually rewatched dark city since it came out? i haven't, but i remember thinking it was kind of lame in the theatre.

bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I only find out that Alex Proyas is a contender for cinematic genius here

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:41 (sixteen years ago) link

honestly i haven't re-watched either dark city OR the 13th floor, and i bet they would both suck. dark city was "atmospheric."

ian, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:42 (sixteen years ago) link

i watched it on dvd and i was into it. although some parts crossover from noir into goth, i think.

doesn't ebert do the commentary?

Jordan, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Dude you're totally neglecting the troo genius -- screenwriter David Goyer, who went on to the BLADE trilogy!

David R., Friday, 28 March 2008 15:46 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't believe i have never seen johnny mnemonic. now i kind of want to!

i think i am voting for 12 monkeys.

bell_labs, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

X-Files is Fight the Future, not the entire television series, right?

Mordy, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

isn't johnny mnemonic mostly set in NEWARK? I'm from Newark. Don't make any ponderous, horribly written dystopic movies about Newark.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 March 2008 15:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Dark City: great set-up, shite final act. Gets points for trying though. It tosses very similar ideas about that the Matrix would a few years later.

chap, Friday, 28 March 2008 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i know i shouldnt but for some reason i need to vote for EVENT HORIZON
