This reminds me: has U Street been decimated yet? That area (NW??? can't remember which quadrant now) was hella-awesome in the mid-/late-90s.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

define decimated. if you mean all drinks on that street are now ten dollars, then basically yes

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:16 (sixteen years ago) link

(I am captain hilarious today. all of you will laugh now.)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant. I knew the clubs I knew were gone but wasn't sure if the things that took their place were decent or not. Apparently, not.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

the thing is that most of the gentrification/upscaling that's happened seems pretty cool and tolerable for a few weeks to a couple of months.
Then the storefronts designed to attract more inconsiderate self-congratulatory power queer yuppies to the surrounding condos actually achieve their intent and you just have to wonder to yourself HOW MANY OF YOU ARE THERE?

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:22 (sixteen years ago) link

There's no place worth going to on U st anymore unless you count Selam, Dukem, Madjet, Roha, Solly's, The Saloon, Ben's Chili Bowl, The Islander, Creme, Bohemian Caverns, Axis, or Polly's.

Well, she's not a boy, but she drinks and won't be in Virginia... got any more absolute nuggets for me to relay? I feel worse for her daily :/

Will M., Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Ben's Chili Bowl may be the answer here.

5. Avoid Republic Gardens

HI DERE, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

find pedestrian routes that avoid passing the entrance to lauriol plaza. generally try not to think too much about most of the other people that live here, why they live here, or what they do for a living.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link

If the weather is nice, you could go to the zoo. Or, maybe you and mom would like to go to the Library of Congress, National Archives, and/or Folger Shakespeare Library?

Other mumsy things: Philips Collection in Dupont Circle (private gallery of Impressionist art), ugh . . . the Corcoran maybe? National Museum of Women in the Arts! (It's a nice small museum, more like a gallery, in a cool old building.)

I would go to the Masonic Temple and Meridian Hill park (is that the right name?). and you could go to the Society of the Cincinatti if your mom likes the Civil War period.

Really, I would just walk around, I think the weather is supposed to be nice.

PS: you should take the Chinatown bus instead of Amtrak. Have fun!

(You and your mom could come and help me try to sell my car in Sterling if none of the above options look interesting to you.)

I would like to see Nabisco and his mom run through Crystal City in a pastiche/homage to the obligatory parent/child shopping trip bonding scene in many family movies.

I actually hosed that up pretty bad, I shouldn't really get into my personal bullshit on board though.

OTOH chi-kevin is correct in assuming I'm considering a move, that is definitely on the table (in march or april at the earliest though)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I just need to end another sentence with though

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I think you should take your mom to "Wack--the Art of the Feminist Revolution" and if she doesn't like that, there is also a Frida Kahlo exhibit.
