I REALLY want little anchor tags for each post. So the first post gets <a name="1"> the second post gets <a name="2"> etc. so that it's possible to link to specific posts instead of just the whole thread. The way it is now it's like a hyooge collection of 70 minute mix CDs with only one track on each one. Also, it would allow jel to actually link to the top :)

(p.s. "my flesh"!! ha!)

I'd really like an HTML error checker, so people can check for open tags, dead links and so on before they post.

RickyT, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Could this be the answer to my problems?
I use a Mac (badly), so I don't even know how to "view source."
My continual posting ineptitude feels like the web equivalent of bad breath.

Does anyone read this? RIGHT how do I change the colour of JUST ONE LINK? No, I'm doing no work at all. Do I have to faff with CSS for this? Oy vey... aidez moi!

Sarah, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Top of new answers, phew, please help! I've tried putting the link I want to be a different colour as H2 {color: silver) but it doesn't change anything - is this because it is a link and that overrides?!

This is my STYLE:

Sheesh!

Sarah, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh tits. I forgot about the TAGS:

[STYLE TYPE="text/css"]
[!---
BODY { font-family: serif }
a:link { text-decoration: none }
H2 {font-family: sans-serif; color: silver }
-->
[/STYLE]

Sarah, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You wanna define a different class for yr mail to link. Something like:

a.mailtostyle {font-family: sans-serif; color: silver}

and then use it in yr link like this:

<a class="mailtostyle" href="mailto:starry@themoderninter.net"> mail me </a>

and again

jel --, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

why not just:
<A HREF="http://www.google.com"><FONT COLOUR="#ff0000">red link</FONT></A>

(hope this works)

michael, Wednesday, 27 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh aye, but I thought Sarah wanted to do it with stylesheets.

RickyT, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, I thought you could only DO it with style sheets! I thought I was being rather complicated... ah well! Hopefully I'll have a vaguely neu atommick brane latXoR. Does anyone also know how to make visited links struck through? Can you just do that w/ stylesheets as well..?

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yup. Try:

a:visited {text-decoration: line-through}

I'd just stick with colour changes though. Does it really matter if links have already been clicked on?

RickyT, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've changed the colour AND the strikethrough. Go and have a look! The AB has been haxx0red but... in a very CRAP WAY. In other words some DIFFERENT COLOURS and boring stuff. God I'm dull.

Sarah, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like the strikethrough idea ("been there, done that") - ha ha I must NEVER visit Freaky Trigger ever again!

Jeff W, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ahh ok, stylesheets, i thought it was just for ILx, and stylesheets seemed a bit extravagant. if you're using stylesheets, save them as a separate CSS file (rather than as STYLE tags in the page), and include it's URL in the HEAD object, then you can change the look of the whole site at once, without having to change each page individually.

michael, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This is pretty cool. (if it works)

Sam, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This is a REALLY good Java Script Generator. No need to master it yerself. Just ask and it will be given to you! Woohoo!

helenfordsdale, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well bollox, I need to brush up my html skillzz. This is it: http://javascript.internet.com/generators/
Try this

helenfordsdale, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

sam - only glanced at the source, but is probably not working because of line breaks - Javascript treats end of line characters as the end of the statement, whether or not it has reached the semi-colon. it would probably work with more careful cutting and pasting

I want to jump on the comments bandwagon! So I've tried to add something. It vaguely works. But in the bit where you are supposed to say 'hahaha sarah that was a really good and witty piece of writing about cheese and jay-z there' it comes up with a bit of COMPUTER LANGWIDGE wot you can delete... but why is it there? Will someone go haf a look and see if they can see why this may be?

I'm looking to design a form that'll allow people who acess my site to write a message in the form and send it to me (i.e. a long message/set of info) via e-mail.

Is this v. difficult? What do I need to know about forms? What are CGI scripts and are they scary? Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Can someone give me advice on this quandary. Preferably I mean send ma script: I am designing a form which will allow users to input info and then click a submit button which will then hopefully send off the information inputted to me via e-mail. Now, I need a CGI Script to do this sending bit I think. So where can I get a ready made CGI E- Mail script? Do you have one you wouldn't mind me pilfering? Or are there standard readily adaptable ones on the web?

Alang, please help.

david h(0wie), Thursday, 18 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'll find or write you one if you're still looking. a lot of the sample cgi scripts around have gaping security holes.

you can always use: <FORM METHOD="post" ACTION="mailto:email@address.here">

which most browsers support instead of a CGI script

michael, Friday, 19 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Could you please write me one? I can pay in Mini-discs or Tapes. E- mail me here: 0006335hTHANKYOU@student.gla.ac.uk minus the THANKYOU. Thanks.

I think he's got it.

Graham (graham), Monday, 21 October 2002 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

um, too must nesting star, you don't need half of those tables.

if you have a table containing only one tr containing only one td then it doesn't need to be a table.

if you have a table containing lots of trs each containing just one td then scrap that too and just separate the rows using p tags.

Thanks Andy - as this happened last night at night I just started again from scratch - when I have some time to sit and concentrate on it I might try and figure out how to better THE EVIL COMPUTER LANGWIDGE but as for now I will just be a bit crap. Chiz.

Let's say you want to post a photo, but you are unsure how large it will end up on the screen. What can you do to minimize the size?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

<img height=#ofpixels width=#ofpixels src="http://shania.com/lovemeformymusic.jpg">

where #ofpixels = the dimensions of the image you'd like to resize. maintain a constant ratio in order to reduce distortion.

gygax!, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

you can hand code the img tag and supply width=n and height=m attributes along with the src thing. make sure the width and height values are in the same ratio as the original image or it'll look stretched.

but this is bad practice - it means the entire image has to be downloaded (lots of data possibly) before the broswer resizes it (and browser image resizing isn't always that good, qualitywise). resizing it yourself and linking to new image is better.

(curse you gygax! 8)
