I hope all goes well, Alex.

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 4 March 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

I'm sorry Alex. Stay optimistic. Modern medicine is amazing and the fact that your sister-in-law had a healthy baby is a good reassurance.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

Congratulations Alex!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

Er, Roger, reread the last few messages first, yeah?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, I hope that all goes well.

Sam, yes modern medicine can be quite amazing at times, but it can also kill.

Let's hope the little one doesn't need to be put on medication as soon as he or she comes into this world.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck off Aja.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago) link

way to be encouraging aja.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago) link

I hope things go well, Alex. I have no expertise or advice to offer, but you have my best wishes.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago) link

way to be encouraging aja.

Look, I know that's not "good news" but it is a reality, isn't it?

Any way, praying, hoping and wishing the best for the baby.

Fuck off Aja.

Now, what the hell is your problem?

Go f**** yourself if the best thing you have to do is curse at someone who wasn't even talking to you?

Aja (aja), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago) link

the problem is that there is a time and a place - this was neither. no one wants bad news or even the threat of it at times like this... if you want to be treated like an adult, you have to learn to act like one.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago) link

are you gonna tell me to fuck off now because you weren't talking to me?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago) link

aja do you visit people in the hospital and say "hey I hear you'll probably die. boy, i heard about this other guy who had your condition and the doctors fucked him up so bad he can't even talk now"?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago) link

WHY ARE YOU GUYS TALKING TO HER, ESP. ON THIS THREAD?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

um, perhaps people should drop it and move on already (this def. includes you aja)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

xpost

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

good luck and god bless alex.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago) link

I won't say that to you, luna.

I know no one want's bad news. I haven't had a good day today, and I'm sorry. I guess I was just passing my bad energy to Alex, in a way you could say, just like I have to just about everyone else today.

I got so pissed off at a girl that just asked to borrow my eraser! Please forgive.

I really hope the best for Alex's baby, really!

I don't really know what to do. This is big news and I wasn't really sure of how to handle it "appropriatly." I'm just wanting something good to happen to me today.

How selfish!!! I'm ashamed of myself. Hope you all have better luck than me.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:52 (twenty years ago) link

aja do you visit people in the hospital and say "hey I hear you'll probably die. boy, i heard about this other guy who had your condition and the doctors fucked him up so bad he can't even talk now"?

No, not at all. I can't even talk to the person I'm visiting. I feel so bad because of how sickly they look and I can only try to imagine the pain they are going through.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:54 (twenty years ago) link

DROP IT

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:56 (twenty years ago) link

Fine, fine!

ON YOU'RE HEAD!!

Good luck and best wishes to Alex and Mrs. Alex. It appears that the condition isn't completely a curse and that things have worked out well for quite a few individuals in the same situation, so hopefully things will work out for you guys as well.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:15 (twenty years ago) link

good luck, Alex. take care. :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:19 (twenty years ago) link

Alex,

Although I don't have experience of this particular condition, I suffered severe pre-eclampsia in my second pregnancy. This is something which can cause the mother's liver and kidney to stop functioning and is altogether A Very Bad Thing.

Your wife is in her eighth month now, so if the doctors think there is any danger to either her or your baby then they will probably get her into hospital and induce her labour early. At 8 months, your baby is fully formed and has all its vital bits - it just spends the last few weeks getting a bit bigger.

The hospital will probably suggest that your wife has an ultrasound scan so they can measure the size of your baby, and wire her up to a monitor which records the baby's heartbeat. From that they'll be able to decide whether the baby is in any distress or not, and whether s/he would be better off staying put or the birth being induced.

Early babies sometimes get a bit jaundiced and hospitals will treat this with photo-therapy (letting your baby bask under a sun lamp for a few minutes a day).

My daughter was born at 34 weeks and everything was fine. I'm sure it will be for you, your wife and your baby too, and I wish you all the best :)

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 4 March 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago) link

i know its scary enough without all this extra shit alex. pregnancy has become a series of "what if" or "oh no" scenarios. i wish you the very best.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 4 March 2004 08:45 (twenty years ago) link

Alex this is awful news. My best to you & your family. As has been said upthread, with the pregnancy in its 8th month, if they have any doubt they will perform a c-section & mum & baby should both be well & home as soon as possible. I hope it all works out well & please keep us updated. *big hugs & positive thoughts*

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 4 March 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago) link

wow. For a start, I'd truly like to express how touched I am by everyone's posting. I know I can be a flagrant spewer of venom from time to time, but I'm certainly not made of steel these days, and everyone's words of hope and encouragement have meant a lot. I really wouldn't with this variety of stress on anyone.

As a quick update, we went back to the hospital today for more tests. While the blood tests still reflect the problem, a fetal monitoring showed that everything is fine at the moment.....but they now want us to come back to the hospital once a week to check the progress. I believe that in the majority of instances of this disorder, the worst case scenario happened when the problem went unchecked. We're hoping that since they've pinpointed it (we think), they can take whatever necessary precautions to make sure the worst doesn't occur.

Anyway, that's really all we know right now. Thanks once again for your best wishes and all your positive thoughts.
