the mr. show skecth was funny, but this topped it EASY - plus mr. show was just 'hey man there were drug references on hr. puffnstuff holy moly', this was much more than that

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago) link

wasn't this just "puppets have adult problems"?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

It was "kids have adult problems and we are going to satirize that sad fact of modern urban life with foul-ass nasty puppets".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago) link

"... and Snoop's penis."

hit too close to home for somebody it seems

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think a mock-musical has ever made me laugh.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

Now you're even crazier. You didn't even chuckle at Charlie Murphy's Oscar the Grouch? Or Snidely Whip-Herpes leaving with "see you in hell, motherfuckers"?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 1 April 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago) link

I have to admit I enjoyed the "that's why...I say...fuck it" song.

i THOUGHT THE PART IN THE PUPPET SKETCH WHEN THE BIG ONE IN THE TRASHCAN WAS SINGIN "F**K IT" WAS PRETTY DAMN FUNNY

"I DONT NEED YOU HONEY,CUZ I BEAT MY DICK LIKE IT OWES ME MONEY"

THATS PRICELESS!!!!

mocha, Monday, 19 April 2004 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

"Black Bush" will go down as one of his best bits.

"a Coalition, you ask? Uh, uh, we got Afrika Bambaataa & the Zulu Nation, uhm, Stankonia will be dropping bombs over Baghdad..."

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago) link

Black Bush was terrible. The idea was great, there are so many places you could go with it, but it wasn't funny at all.

The segregated toilet sketch was cringe-inducing. But maybe I'm just not into shit humor.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 19 April 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago) link

the toilet bit was too long for very little funny.

Black Bush was genius, one of my favorites of the season.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

MARS BITCHES. RED ROCKS!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 19 April 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago) link

Ask For Smantha otm re: the segregationist toilet sketch. I thought the Wayne Brady one was right up there w/Black Bush. I will never watch anyting Wayne Brady is ever in, but I have a tiny pea-sized amoutn of respect for him now.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 19 April 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

Yo bitches, Chapelles show is the best and if any ya'll disagree, I slap the taste out of yo mouth...King Kong aint got shit on me, BITCH

Wayne Brady can act better than Dave

lil' jon meets lil' jon was excellent. i luvs the king of crunk.

i'd love to have a chappelle/doggy fizzle marathon. who's down?

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago) link

Two weeks after a clip episode of failures, they're going a best-of. Chappelle and co. are lazy.

I want more funny Chappelle, less Chappelle-that-didn't-work and Chappelle-I've-already-seen.

I think maybe he's trying too hard to fit in a funny catchphrase for each sketch, since that's what has been most popular. Sometimes it works ("Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?")

I was watching some of the S1 DVDs, and noticed that the episode with the pretty white girl singing Dave's thoughts had basically the same homophobic statement that ILM gave 50 Cent a 300-post thread for.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago) link

four months pass...
Haf gotten the season one DVD and am up to episode seven now.

I didn't really get what Mooney's problem with the drug deal scene in "The Godfather" is.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:03 (nineteen years ago) link

he has so much to answer for.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i think chappelle's current position can best be summed up in his "so let me ask you...what don't you people, like?" jab at the vma's. it's probably not a healthy place for a comedian to be, but at least he doesn't seem to be taking himself seriously in the slighest (unlike, oh, eddie murphy circa 85.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 11:14 (nineteen years ago) link

he has so much to answer for.

A local sportsradio/TV anchorman personality told a story about going out to the first football game at a local university two weeks ago and having a group of frat boys start yelling for his attention with "Yo, nigga!" etc. (trying to be cool). He couldn't believe a bunch of white kids at an expensive private university would even think about yelling that in public, much less at a black man - and blamed it on them watching too many Chappelle Shows.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

You should tell him about rap.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

And about how FRAT BOYS ARE DUMB.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

there's an old episode of "Def Comedy Jam" where Dave talks about kicking a white friend's ass for saying "what's up, my nigga?"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I watched some newish Chappelle stand-up thing on Showtime over the weekend that was funnier than fuck. I like the bit at the end where he was talking about how he only wanted to be a big enough celebrity that he could go to the $5,000 blackjack table in Vegas - not to bet, but to plop his dick down on somebody's shoulder and get away with it.

*on cellphone*
"Honey, you'll never guess whose dick is on my shoulder!"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I've got that special on tape. I haven't watched it all but I did catch that bit. Good stuff.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I prefer his stand-up to The Chappelle Show by like a million.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

The content / commercial ratio is certainly more preferable.

rehab? or illness?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:05 (nineteen years ago) link

In interviews he always seems really whacked out.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago) link

cocaine's a helluva drug.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm guessing illness, though i really hope not...

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 5 May 2005 17:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Chappelle did have pneumonia earlier this year, which delayed work on Season 3; a relapse of this or a new illness is always possible. Still, the fact that Comedy Central had been announcing new episodes beginning 5/31 raises suspicions.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe comedy central is like "50 MILLION DOLLARS what the fuck were we thinking?" and are trying to renegotiate the contract

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I bet he pulls a Martin and ends up running down a freeway naked at 4am or some shit like that...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Skidmore did that?

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:56 (nineteen years ago) link

He looks really uncomfortable and confused in the ads for the new season on the subways here in NYC.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 5 May 2005 18:59 (nineteen years ago) link

apparently they haven't finished filming the season yet b/c he's been unhappy with it so they are putting off the debut until all the eps are in the can.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Gawker gossip:

According to a conversation between the [someone playing a key role on the show] and [someone else affiliated with someone on the show], Dave Chappelle has completely gone off his rocker. He is basically AWOL and in need of some serious psychological help. I don’t mean this figuratively. Kiss the season goodbye, and most likely Chappelle will be sued for breach of contract. The guy is just acting nuts right now.

Mr. Harvey Weinstein (mr harvey weinstein), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago) link

He's been working nonstop for the past year. Exhaustion, or indeed some mental breakdown, is not "acting nuts". That's offensive.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 5 May 2005 19:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I don't have the personal relationship with him that you seem to, but I was just reposting some "gossip" (that means it may not be true.)
