So Alex what are you trying to prove? That pits can bite people and when they do it can be very damaging? Nobody is arguing against that.

Hey, slow down, dog-loving lynch mob. I'm just being the devil's advocate here. The question I asked at the top of thread was genuine -- I sincerely don't understand the appeal of these dogs, especially in light of the damage they can do and their notorious track record (and for the record, I don't believe that it's simply media hype ala "Summer of the Shark" etc.)

Maybe part of their appeal IS their ability to fuck-shit-up. A well-trained fuck-shit-up dog might seem very appealing in terms of personal protection and whatnot. I guess what I'm saying is, considering a well-trained pit is more likely to fuck up some would-be attacker's shit than their owners, well...where's the non-appeal in that?

Sharks can and do bite humans, but it's a pretty rare thing. Same with pitbulls. Overestimating the dangers of both is largely do to an availability heuristic.

There have been several owners here who explained why they love their pitbulls. What more do you want? What would make you understand?

Why not simply invest in a pair of brass knuckles and a can of mace then? Cheaper, and you don't have to walk them.

Alex, like I said - once you get to know the breed, you'll come to love them. Unless you're not a dog lover at all.

I used to be afraid of them until my sister got one. They really are -extremely- affectionate and follow you everywhere. They're also really playful and are great clowns. Also very, very obedient.

It's kind of hard to explain if you don't have one. You develop a strong trusting bond with these dogs - you really feel you know them, so you really don't think twice that they will attack you.

i think we all recognize the "thug" appeal of dogs like these.
but i don't think alex and i will be able to overcome our doggie-discrimination + understand the appeal of a pit-bull (or any similar breed) as a family pet.

Once again -- don't misunderstand me. I'm not spearheading a movement to eliminate pit bulls, I'm just trying to fathom why a rational person would want such a dog (and for what it's worth, I remain unconvinced of their appeal). Perhaps I'm simply buying into the negative aspects of their reputation, but said reputation is steeped in some pretty grizzly fact. Also, I suspect many (read:NOT ALL) pit bull owners see them as some sort've tough guy mystique-enhancing accessory as opposed to a proper pet.

I don't know any pit bulls. I haven't had any bad experiences with them (my bad dog experiences involve Boxers, actually). I'm just puzzled by their appeal.

my parents adopted a stray pit bull when i was 3 or 4 and he died when i was about 14. he was the kindest, gentlest, most playful dog i've had (out of 4) and the only time he ever snapped at anyone was at a party of our when some jackass started swatting him and yanking on his tail and shit. he didnt even bite the guy. just snapped and growled.
the only dog i've been bit by is a chow, for what it's worth.
