My perspective is, after living in the middle of nowhere for the last 8 years and having really nowhere to wander but the hallways of my own brain, I have a hard time thinking that acid or mushrooms could spring any surprises about myself on me, and if it gave me some interesting sensory input, hellzyesbringit.

my mind is constantly occupied with my workplace laying everyone off (i know i'm safe tho)(for now), my first long term relationship in a long time (and that i think i suck at it) and my mom who is recovering from a serious stroke (and me having to manage her nightmare finances for her for a bit and retrofit her house etc etc) - and i'm pretty sure if i dropped my mind would eventually go to these not-so-happy places and i'd give myself a psychedelic stress lobotomy. 10 years ago i didn't give a crap about shit and stuff like zoomers was fun.

I was young, very nervous, and self-conscious when I was doing acid. The drug actually helped dissolve some of the anxiety, but not the self-consciousness.

One time a friend and I went to a Motel 6 in Winston-Salem, NC to do acid (we were both living w/ our parents). The place was in the ghetto and right next to the Crazy Horse strip club. My friend had tripped the night before, so his tab never took effect, and he went to sleep, leaving me all alone to trip in a really, dirty nasty Motel 6 listening to the scary rednecks tumble out of the Crazy Horse.

That night I took a shower and masturbated while tripping. The shower was incredible, but the masturbation was too weird.

I wrote my thoughts on the bed sheet in pen.

shrooms feel far more organic (daft word to use i know...), but the trip feels like it emanates from inside you rather than being pasted onto you. and i think the internal emanation is easier to deal with when the going gets rough.

Not at all, at least for me. The idea that I might somehow be internally responsible for what I'm thinking is not cool. With acid, I find that acid-thinking and regular-thinking are kind of mutually permeable and often leak into each other but are, in the final analysis, easier to sort out.

I used to do lots of mushrooms and the ideas I formed after those trips often stayed with me in ways that I wasn't easily able to sort out. With acid I know quite clearly I'm in for about six hours of "all my friends are parasites and my apartment is disgusting" on the tail end of it mixed with extremely short attention span and then a further 24 hours of mild "what the fuck happened" and then it's business as usual.

There is nothing like having a calm and affectionate cat to dispel bad hallucinogen paranoia.

Didn't first use until I was 30, and then maybe a half-dozen times. Best time was a spring day in Yosemite Valley - felt something like a Sierra Nevada version on Swamp Thing. Ended up driving (yeah I know!) over Sonora Pass - the road was straight out of Dr. Seuss, all loops, impossible curves, vertical cliffs, but it was OK since I knew that I was creating my own artifical gravity. Stay on the road and you'll be fine. Celebrated at Bridgeport with a steak dinner, and couldn't get over how amazing tomatoes were.

i see your point fields of salmon, i guess it's matters of degrees. i've always found acid to be more of an unknown (a blotter, a microdot), as opposed to a number of shrooms that i can build up (i'm a cautious type).

i think what i meant was that my acid trips have felt less controlled than shroom ones.

DMT story: Me and a friend set up a bunch of synths with the intent of recording while buzzing on DMT. Got a low drone going, OK here we go...

INTENSE hallucination, temporal displacement, and resettling of local universe (the cover of Recurring is an obvious data point coming from me). Re-entry kicks in, so let's try to play something...

...Only we can't because the synths look alive - the patch cables look like arteries, the drone is breathing, and well, that Opus III looks just too damn cool. Touching it would disrupt order. Not surprising to anyone, I was impossibly fascinated by the Moog logo and the fonts on a Juno 80.

Finally wore off and was convinced that 6+ hours had passed, but actually it was barely two. What the he'll?

i don't really sense an age thing, but perhaps that's because i've tripped with people who are significantly older than me, and they've been cool and everything's been grand. then again, most of these older people were wanderers living outside of 'normal' society, so any sort of 'normal' hangups weren't there as much.

mostly, i feel like i don't want to trip on acid again because i've done it...uh...okay, i've dropped acid about 30 times, though i would only count 15-20 as real 'trips.' like i used to take half-tabs of weak shit i had for a while because i was tired but wanted to party and despise cocaine culture.

mushrooms make my body feel SO much weirder. i've never had a mushroom trip where i didn't feel like my face was melting off a bit. acid's physical side effects were always much more 'something is scraping your veins,' which is much more of a speed-like physical comparison, ime. i can deal with speed. but face-melting and lots of near-vomiting insanity? eh, give or take.

love mushrooms in small doses - no vomiting no face melting. just a faint brightness and cartoony mooshiness to everything, and a sense of deep body relaxation. emphasizes the comic aspects of life and human behavior, takes the edge off social anxiety. nice for a night on the town with no expectations.

never done acid that way. always went for the whole echilada.

I grew shrooms one summer and I ate and ate them in sometimes huge quantities and never had overly-intense trips (admittedly they were not the strongest ever).

A couple recurring elements of my shrooming:

- people on TV always looked like what I call "Pixar people." Like this

even when other things look pretty normal.

- Groundhog-day syndrome. It seemed like the same things kept happening over and over and over.

One time I was tripping hard while alone when I discovered that if I cupped my hands around my eyes and looked through the space, everything was purple. I tried squeezing my whole head through the space (so my hands encircled my neck), I was in a whole different purple world - like being immersed in grape Kool-Aid. As soon as removed my hands the purple was gone.

I think you can do that sober, though.

I was at a bar a few months ago and suddenly the baseball players on TV looked like Pixar people. I thought it was something the broadcasters were doing on purpose. My friend who was with me swore that everything was normal the whole time. Oops, flashback.

Oh yeah, we were listening to the radio and this fucking brutal industrial beat came on, like the hardest most exciting thing I'd ever heard. I was desperate to know what it was, I'd never heard anything like it. Turns out it was You Win Again by the Bee Gees.
