I've done/am doing so much cooking but I don't have much of an appetite...hopefully it returns in the next couple hours.

one turkey leg, mashed potatoes, salad, cranberry sauce, squash, corn, three rolls, two slices of apple pie, and three scoops of ice cream. And four glasses of wine.
I finished eating by 3:00 in the afternoon. Now here it is six hours later and I don't feel stuffed to the gills anymore, which is nice. And I'll go to bed hungry and therefore lose some lb's overnight. Good times.

All y'all who say "stuffing," is this something that is baked in the bird, or do you really mean "dressing"?

Stuffing is the bread based goodness traditionally baked in the bird but it doesn't have to be. Would you really call that dressing?

DO NOT THROW TOMATOES AT ME, but I do not like holiday meals. I prefer indian food any day of the week. We went to the stanley hotel and had dinner earlier, I had pecan pie and salad and brie. oh and some steamed asparagus.

I always thought stuffing was, by definition, stuffed into the bird to bake, but I guess not since the abomination that is Stove Top Stuffing is not necessarily meant for the inside of the bird. What I call dressing is cornbread dressing, but I'm sure there is also non-cornbread dressing. PS, prepackaged stuffing mixes can eat a bag of pope's noses.

Buffet @ the Squaxin Island tribal casino was a-okay, but the brussel sprouts were sad-looking. If I was my grandma, I'd have left with a purse full of "leftovers" and a slice of white bread. But I'm not (forgot to pack the ziplocs).
I missed cooking, a lot. But I'd rather cook for people 1) I actually like 2) that want to eat 3) what I cook.

My mom made this throughout my childhood in the 80s. The taste of it is instant time-machine for me, but results may vary. Here is her recipe:
Mandarin Orange Salad
Dressing:1/4 cup salad oil (not olive oil use canola or similar oil)1/4 tsp tabasco sauce1/2 tsp salt2 Tablespoons white sugar2 Tablespoons Tarragon VinegarMix thoroughly and keep at room temp
Salad:1 can drained mandarin oranges1/2 head chopped iceberg lettuce mix with hearts of romaine1 cup chopped celery1Tbl chopped fresh parsley2 green onions chopped1/2 cup slivered almonds (roast in a pan or toaster oven)
MIx salad with dressing, Add roasted almonds on top just before serving
I use red leaf and romaine instead of iceberg, add cucumbers and avocados and scrap the celery. Because it's not Kentucky in the 1980s anymore . . .

mine was 11 lbs too -- it finished cooking quicker than i expected it to! it didn't turn out "dry" per se but it wasn't as thoroughly moist as the last turkey i made. still, delicious.

how to have a successful thanksgiving, get bent style...-your relatives live 3,000 miles away and your extended family as a whole (mostly because of age/distance/death) doesn't really "do" thanksgiving anymore-your significant other doesn't have a family thanksgiving either (similar reasons) and has no plans-you make a turkey and a couple of well-considered side dishes and a store-bought pie, so you still have *plenty* of food but it's all killer, no filler-you do most of the prep/cooking beforehand and relax on the day, while the bird cooks-winner!― and then peaced (get bent), Thursday, November 25, 2010 12:50 PM (0 seconds ago) Bookmark
