Larry: Apparently, no one wants to have anything to do with me because of the Shaq thing.
Cheryl: That's... kinda sad.
Larry: What, are you kidding?

[while ordering coffee at Starbucks]
Larry David: I'll have a vanilla... one of those vanilla bullshit things. You know, whatever you want, some vanilla bullshit latte cappa thing. Whatever you got.

[after leaving a terrible dinner party]
Larry: What's the level of anger here? What am I dealing with?
Cheryl: Well, I'd have to say at least an 8.7.
Larry: 8.7? That's not that bad. I thought it would be at least a 9.
Cheryl: It was a 9. Then you broke that lamp, and the crazy woman screamed at you, and it got you some pity points.
Larry: Pity points. That's fabulous, I love pity points. But how can I get to a 7? I know a 6 is out of the question, but is there any way I can get to a 7?

Larry: Nice house.
Susie: Yeah, come on. I'll give you a tour.
Larry: Naw, it's ok.
Susie: No, come on.
Larry: No, it's ok. I-I get it.
Susie: You get it?
Larry: Yeah, it's a house. It's new. I get it. It's nice.
Susie: You get it? Ok, you know what? Get the fuck out of my house, Larry.

[repeated line]
Cheryl: Why would you do that?

Classic but it's creepy seeing one "real" man be both Jerry/George, really. And fascinating. And the whole thing's kinda beautiful, man. Cheryl makes a goodish Elaine (so far, seen only four eps properly). Surprising how people're saying LD/TVLD's unlikeable, I like him fine!

Yeah it's not just Seinfeld, equally it isn't quite Seinfeld

Way better than Seinfeld.

So so good. I just got the DVD of the first season for Xmas. You see, I don't have HBO. I also just got the DVD of the 4th Sopranos season. I'm always behind on this HBO stuff. Amazingly, I've always managed to avoid Sopranos spoilers (altho I pretty much figured out what happens at the end of Sopranos 5, oh well.)

CYE is hilarious. I haven't laughed out loud so much in a long long time. And yeah, the jewelry store thing was hilarious.

when's the new season, anyone?

i actually didn't want to move out of the place that i lived even though it was a horrendous arrangement for fear of not having hbo and thereby missing curb your enthusiasm.

I bought Season 2 today, partly because I read this thread in the morning. I haven't seen season 1 yet, is that going to be a problem? People were saying that it gets better as it goes along so I got the most recent collection they had.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

both seasons available are hilarious

Season 3 DVD comes out Tues! There's a new season in production now, but it won't air until maybe late this year.

Classic but does anyone know when (if?) it's on in Toronto now? I used to watch it regularly Sunday nights on Showcase but it hasn't been on at that time in a while. The Showcase website doesn't seem to even list it anymore so I wonder if they've dropped it.

OMG, the episode with the guy in the wheelchair and the Wagner is classic. I tend not to like L.A. centricism, but the meta/autobiographical elements here are great. It is weird seeing the Seinfeld refractions, the little elements of the different characters popping up in LD's mannerisms.

My Seinfeld-loving girlfriend did not like it, unfortunately, 'cause she hates the wife character. I don't blame her, even though I think those scenes are largely well done.

Almost bought Season 1 a while back but I think I had to hold off due to having to buy holiday gifts. Soon.

How can you not like Cheryl David? She's so awesome.

The Wagner episode I think is my all-time favorite.

Hahahhahahahahhahahahahahahah.

Cheryl is such a fantastic character. And hot, to boot. She really comes across as the only woman in the entire world who could possibly love and tolerate Larry David. She's just as intelligent as him, but has social mores and a sense of societal responsibility.

I watched all four series over a short period of time, and now when I try to watch it again I just find it too unbearable. When you know just how badly he's going to fuck things up... ugh.

Genius, none the less. At its funniest, much funnier than Seinfeld.

he has such expressive hands. they're really funny I find. I can laugh through a whole episode by just following his hands.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 17 January 2005 10:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Does Cheryl, um, do anything? Like work? Or does she just read and hang out keep Larry in line?

It's a full-time job.

i seem to remember that she is some sort of environmental activist. in several episodes she is organizing events, asking for donations, etc.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Real answer to the question: she's the wife of the creator of Seinfeld. You wouldn't have a real job, either.

I believe her character is an actress (see the episode where she was offered a role in the Vagina Monologues) but, perhaps after marrying Larry, has decided to focus on charity work.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I still submit that the show is at its worst when it involves Larry managing to offend someone in a completely implausible way, especially if it involves a group of people standing around and glaring at him, with absolutely nobody willing to accept Larry's explanation or give him the benefit of the doubt.

One of my favorite episodes of Season 2 is where Larry becomes a car salesman for a day, because of the absurdity of the situation and the relish he brings to the role. I love Cheryl's and Richard's reactions. And it really has nothing to do with Larry alienating anyone at all.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree. Why, for instance, did Larry launch into that dirty speech about Mary in the nativity scene? Maybe if he'd been drinking heavily, that would explain it. As it was, it seemed that the script just called for him to do something outrageous.

He's just saying all the kinds of things comedians say in their standup acts, all the annoyances and put-downs and stuff but in this show it's like he's actually saying them in the real world, in the situations as they come up.. and it's funny but it's also like some horrible nightmare!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

That's a good way to look at it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago) link

It makes you realize just how nasty and twisted the "standup comedian" mindset is.

I just bought season 3, haven't watched any of it yet (I've seen 2, not 1 though).

I hate how the episode summaries on the box take great pains to mention everything that happens in each one, including the endings. It's as if they want to intentionally spoil the "plot" because it's beside the point.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 18 February 2005 18:54 (nineteen years ago) link

hilarious moments:

1. krazee-eyez killa: "mothafucka-whatthefuck?? mothafucka-whatthefuck??"

2. larry, imitating maury povich girl: "you dont know me! you dont know me! fuck you! you can all go fuck yourselves!"
