the *crump crump crump* of walking in silence in the first snow at night. no traffic, no music, no people, just the sound of your boots compacting the snow. i always forget how wet snow acts as a great sound baffle.

The sound of my keyboard when I hit command-shift-q right before going home for the day.
xp: good one!

Some contained job offers, and the rest contained applications for Starbucks
that is amazing
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link
I hit alt+ctrl+del, enter.
oooh. snow is great.
What about sounds that are seasonally obtainable? I have some homework due tomorrow that I haven't finished is why I'm asking!
― sweet tater, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link
I like the sound of a beer bottle being opened.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link
And the sound of a cell phone being flipped shut.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link
The sound of the snowblower actually starting after ~900 pulls on a 10 below morning was always pretty sweet, because it meant that the hard part was over and with only a little more work I could go get warm.
― dan m, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link
Also my cat snoring.
crunching of leaves underfoot? we noticed them walking down damen from the farmer's market in wicker park down to the plant store south of chicago the other day.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link
i so wish i could get a recording of your cat snoring! how cute!
― sweet tater, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:49 (sixteen years ago) link
one you probably can't record but i love the sound of the el going at full speed through the tunnels of the subway. it's such a rare occurrence these days i'd almost forgotten about it.
― chicago kevin, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link
It's totally cute. Really high-pitched.
― Jordan, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link
i love the sound of 70s-80s cassette player buttons, particularly pause. i used to test out all of the pause buttons on the stereos at jc penney's when my mom and i went to the mall.
other sounds i love: dog yawns (sounds like all of the vowels -- aieeeeou) crunchy foods being chewed by people i care for leaves being crunched by feet the satisfying click of old radios being turned off
― La Lechera, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link
some of those are feels as well as sounds, though, esp. the pause buttons

clunk of heavy german car door
― river wolf, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 22:37 (sixteen years ago) link
Jeff, we should play tennis sometime. I am really bad. We have one metal racket and one wood racket, so when Sarah and I play I have to use the wood racket and it sucks.
I have two good rackets. You can use my titanium one.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:45 (sixteen years ago) link
I also have an adamantium racket.

So excited about the game tonight. Nick you could watch it over here. But it would be really out of the way and you would still be up late. At least it wouldn't be a stupid bar though.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:51 (sixteen years ago) link
We could make s'mores and drink 90 minute IPA.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 23:56 (sixteen years ago) link
oh that shit is gooooooooood
― river wolf, Thursday, 4 October 2007 00:00 (sixteen years ago) link
I agree with Mr. Wolf about the german car door clunk.
I like the rustle of certain kinds of fabric, especially in movies when a scene is meant to convey coziness and the sound of crisp sheets is amplified.
Seasonal sounds.... the sound of ice-laden tree limbs creaking in the wind. Also, the sound of those limbs crashing down.

Ladies and Germans, it is time for me to make KIM CHEE.
Soon my apartment will smell like Argyle and Broadway.
― Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:21 (sixteen years ago) link
The raspy sound of pages being turned.
A chair being pulled out in my parents' kitchen, you can hear it faintly throughout the house.
Heavy old dominoes clicking together -- actually all things Bakelite and/or celluloid being clicked against each other. Such a satisfying impression of density.
― Laurel, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:31 (sixteen years ago) link
That recipes and music blog is dead, right? I finally have a recipe to post--a Frankenstein's monster of various Kim Chee recipes from the internet.
Next I want to make sauerkraut.
― Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:51 (sixteen years ago) link
My dad can help you with that.
― Jeff, Thursday, 4 October 2007 01:53 (sixteen years ago) link
I know. Tell Stumpington to call me. We'll dish.

The new one-section Reader is out on the street tonight. More portable than I imagined it would be -- pretty much the same as the suburban edition of the Reader.

I posted my Q3 mix on the CHILX blog the other day, so it is not dead officially. However, no one had posted anything since my Q2 mix, which means there was a three-month gap in between. People need to post recipes and music.

Sounds I like (lots of great ones upthread!): * tree limbs & leaves rustling right before a storm * the low background noise of a baseball game on tv in the middle of the afternoon * the satisfying pops of bubble wrap when you lay it out on the floor and stomp all over it * the clip clop of dress shoes going down the hall * the whir of the car engine and whipers on a snowy night * birds (I know, a bit traditional)
― KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:34 (sixteen years ago) link
Jeff, Are you serious about S'mores?
― KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:35 (sixteen years ago) link
I like sounds of things engaging solidly--a spent shell being released from a shotgun (or handgun being cocked), solid car door thump--anything that is locking in place with a solid sound. Know what I mean?
― Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:22 (sixteen years ago) link
I do!

-When I went to bed and when I got up, Tina Fey was on tv.
-I watched Death Proof last night and realized that I know the hick that they borrow the Dodge Challenger from as Adam Sandler's assistant from that one episode of Undeclared.
I lead an exciting life.

90 minute IPA.
Oh, is it the 90 you like? Because I bought 60 the other day and thought it was OK but not amazing.
― jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:29 (sixteen years ago) link
They are selling 3 Floyd's Gumballhead in 6ers now.
― dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link
Is 90 minutes how long it's supposed to take to drink??
― KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link
Dogfish Head's signature product is its line of India Pale Ales (IPAs), which are offered in three varieties: 60 Minute, 90 Minute, and 120 Minute IPA. Their names refer to the length of the boil time of the wort in which the hops are continuously added. The longer hops are boiled, the more hop isomerization takes place, and the more bitterness is imparted to the beer.

I saw a case of Flagrant Homophobia last night in front of Pier One on Broadway and Foster. Two homos walked out of Blockbuster holding hands and stood in front of the Pier One dreaming homo dreams of decor. A guy walked up behind them with his cell phone out and took pics (or video?) of them. He was threateningly close. A woman walked by and they both shook their heads and laughed.
― Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, the 60 wasn't hoppy enough!
― jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link
Maybe they were laughing at someone actually wanting to buy shit from Pier One.

When I see 2 men holding hands in a non-gay areas, esp. areas that are sort potentially dangerous, like Uptown, I have this fantasy that someone will start some shit and I will get go apeshit and claw someone's eyes out or something.
