I will also rep for Sonic, forget McDonald's, Sonic is the one that successfully colonized my childhood brain, and even today, Sonic love says "above average taste in food" to me.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I nearly forgot, though: The Jumbo Jack does have a slight edge on the Whopper in the dollar hamburger department.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Horseshoe, according to the handy online Sonic Locator, your nearest drive-through is in either Peoria or Urbana. They're closing in on you, never fear.

nabisco, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:30 (seventeen years ago) link

road trip!

horseshoe, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I'll go with.

Hardee's/Carl Jr's thickburgers are great. If you don't like their advertising you could, you know, stop watching tv, get off your lazy ass and go eat a gigantic fatty fast food burger.

Kerm, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:35 (seventeen years ago) link

The first time I ever went to a Sonic (about 2 years ago), I didn't know what to do. I heard the speaker next to me go off, so I started yelling my order to the menu. I then realized there was a red button and "push when ready to order" sign. That was a sad day.

Chick-fil-A is not open on Sundays. Booo. Sunday is prime "I Need Grease for My Horendous Hangover" day. I know they're trying to be good Christians, but they need to help the sinners (i.e. hungover) out.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I have also never eaten Sonic.

Jordan, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

The last Wendy's sandwich I had was the worst thing I've ever eaten, completely without any redeeming qualities. I could barely finish it.

brownie, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a Sonic about a half mile from my house. It is beautiful.

I have heard rumor of Sonics that aren't just drive-ups! Like, full seating inside!

Oh, Steak and Shake, dudes. Steak and Shake.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Visit the Sonic Locator! They're going national in a big way, creeping up the country from south to north; they haven't gotten everywhere yet, but already it'd be hard to do many long drives without running into a few along the way. I just hope the national expansion doesn't come along with any drop-off in quality, or anything.

How national was the A&W hamburger stand? I used to dig those.

nabisco, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

They're still around.

Jordan, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a couple of those non-drive-up Sonics in Austin. I refuse to use them on principle.

Ms Misery, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

The best thing about the really long drives we did last May (a year ago! Damn, was that the last time I had Sonic?) - I used the locator to map out where they all were along our route and we ate at least 6 meals in 3 weeks at one.

Jaq, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Fast-food gourmands know that Chik-Fil-A is where it's at.

yes yes yes!

OTM. Wendy's is the only other big burger chain I can even stand to eat it.

Chik-Fil-A has weird-tasting chicken. It's sweet and gross and strange but every once in a while I get a serious craving for it and then hate myself for weeks afterwards. At least it's moderately healthy...

A&W still exists down here but I've never been to one. I should go one of these days.

Regional chains tend to be the best, though. I'd take Bojangles over anything in this thread, and I will probably never move out of North Carolina until Cook-Out goes national.

bernard snowy, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

er, that should be "stand to eat at."

bernard snowy, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Bojangles is AOK.

Mrs. Winner's makes my insides cry.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago) link

I brought my son on a business trip to Charlotte once. He spotted Bojangles. Decided it was pronounced "boh-zhan'-gul-ayz" and wouldn't rest until we ate there. I can't remember if it was good or not good, but he was okay with never eating there again.

Jaq, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I was just thinking about Cook-Out... and Char-Grill...

And while we're at it, Five Guys. Free peanuts!

And yeah, Bojangles. Tailgate special w/ gallons of sweet iced tea. ("Bo-han-g'-lays" is common.)

I'm going back to Raleigh in 12 days and I'll be there for a whole month and I'm only going to eat Char Grill, Five Guys, Zaxby's, and Bojangles.

And Q-SHACK! Pork Butt sandwiches, Chile Rubbed Beef Brisket sandwiches, real fried okra...

I was hoping this was the thread where I posted my WHAT I LEARNED FROM TACO BELL list, but it ain't. u_uj

ME TOO!

nickalicious, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I've never been to Five Guys or Zaxby's, and I can't remember the last time I had Char-Grill. I don't spend a lot of time in the Raleigh area, though. Q-Shack is okay but Bullock's is better and closer so I rarely have a reason to eat there. Have you ever been to King's Barbecue in Kinston? I stopped there once on the way back from the beach; they have something called a pig-in-a-puppy, which is a hot dog bun-sized hush puppy split open and used as the bun for a barbecue sandwich. It's AMAZING, and I'm amazed that no one else has stolen the concept yet.

bernard snowy, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Re: Taco Bell -- The Crunchwrap Supreme has gone way downhill. This disappoints me.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Somewhere in ILX history I managed to post with burgerpipelogo.gif as my screen name for like an entire day, I swear to God. I was hoping it was that thread. u_u

nickalicious, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:32 (seventeen years ago) link

xxxpost: Oh well yeah there are tons of proper BBQ places better than Q-Shack... it's just a fast-foodish one. Bullock's is stupid good. Definitely not fast, but worth the wait. I always eat too many hush puppies with honey butter before my two-pound plate of pork arrives.

That pig-in-a-puppy sounds insane. I might have to take a trip to Beaufort just so I can go through Kinston.

Kerm, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Jaq, there's a Sonic in Spokane. That's a lot closer than Boise.

I ate at Burgerville once and it was alright, but I kind of expected more from it. It was good fast food, but didn't blow my mind like I had hoped.

joygoat, Friday, 11 May 2007 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

I like when Sonics have pay-at-the-kiosk technology so I don't have to hand my card to the young lady and make her walk an extra lap and/or tip her.

Anyone have any opinions on WHATABURGER? There used to be some in Tempe when I lived there and I ate at one in Amarillo, TX last year cause it the was closest thing to the gas station off I-40. A very flat and low-riding burger with lots of mustard and diced onions. They're only alright, would be better if cheaper.

iiiijjjj, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Tax included in the price is the best thing about Whataburger.

I went to a Sonic the other night where the credit card readers were on the fritz. The young lady still had to make an extra lap to give me the receipt, and didn't even have me sign anything. I didn't get the opportunity to tip her or to even provide a PIN. I COULDA BEEN ANYONE!

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Whataburger has the best non-Chik-Fil-A chicken fingers of any chain. Plus Texas toast and decent fries.

If Chik-Fil-A is a Michelin 3-Star outfit, Whataburger is a solid 1.5, maybe even a 2.

I used to love those things, but I burned out on them. TOO MUCH TOO MUCH. But I can still eat the hell out of their bacon, egg & plastic cheese biscuits in the morning.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 11 May 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago) link

It's American Cheese, people. It's always like that. You want real cheese on your bacon and egg biscuits, go to your grandma's house.

Now what is really good, is a Bojangles sausage biscuit with mustard. That was the breakfast to eat before first period in high school back in the 90s.

when I was in NY last year my friend who lived there and I went to this place near where he lived (42nd and 11th, seemed like a chain) called Better Burger. It was supposed to be organic meat and stuff I think, and it was very tasty, though more like a sandwich. I think I had a Chicken and Lemongrass burger.

they had this weird policy whereby they ask your name when you order, then it's on your receipt. so when you wait for the order to arrive they call out your name. my friend is called "domhnaill" and the guy working behind the till also found "ronan" quite hard to manage. we let him off the hook eventually.

Ronan, Saturday, 12 May 2007 16:01 (seventeen years ago) link

argh this thread makes me really want to go to Cook-Out but I am stuck at work :(

bernard snowy, Saturday, 12 May 2007 16:07 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a great afterhours burger place here called Tolly Ho that yells your name out for your ticket; there's a TWIST, when you place your order, they ask if you've ever eaten there before, if not, they call out your name thusly: "[your name], THE HO VIRGIN!" and everyone in the (usually completely packed around 3-4am) place applauds them.

Oh shit, SPOILER, sorry.

Search: Sonic (only 22 miles away in Anaheim!), In-n-Out, Five Guys, El Pollo Loco, Carl's Jr., Jack in the Box, Popeye's, or The Hat

Destroy: Burger King (TOO MUCH LIQUID SMOKE, DUDES!)

Sort of meh about McD's or Wendy's.
