No I mean more like...wouldn't they have got suspicious maybe if he knew stuff that Locke couldn't have known, like Jacob's whereabouts?

xxp though i don't really get why he didn't just kill jacob himself instead of talking ben into it?

yeah not sure...is this the "loophole"?

Maybe he needed a real live human to do it?

I still think it's more likely that Locke is possessed, or there's part of him in there as well as the dude in black. I don't think the writers would wipe him out completely and then leave his spirit form wandering around for ages.

The other flaw in the Long Con argument was that it depended on Ben, Jack, Ellie and the woman in the butcher's shop bringing Locke's body back in the correct way. We don't yet know what prompted Ben to take that course of action though.

the white flash reset everything so Locke is still alive but wheelchair-bound. So now there are three Lockes?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah possibly possessed...but then the dead body thing seems a pretty explicit way of saying "there's locke and here's this complete imposter". but yeah it would be weird if the real locke was just gone now for the entire rest of the show...

Oh man, of course, you're right. Though he did charge around acting like he knew all sorts of things because 'the island told me', so what he's professing to know is pretty inconsistent.

Yeah, this kind of depends on who Ben/the Others were actually taking orders from - Ben says that he has to get Locke back there, and Widmore is very keen on getting Locke back there as well, which makes me wonder if MIB was ordering people around from the cabin as Jacob. But it is a pretty big hole.

Brakhage, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost yeah if he'd really done his homework on locke he could have ranted on about anything!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Wasn't Ben only interested in Locke being on the plane to match the conditions of the flight as closely as possible (since he is really only interested in getting back)?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 22:58 (fourteen years ago) link

In his butcher shop conversation he makes it sound like it's a big deal that Locke be returned intact.

I love since he's a compulsive liar he's the character most free of continuity problems.

Brakhage, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 23:00 (fourteen years ago) link

ha! half the characters on the show are compulsive liars!

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago) link

w/r/t to Locke's body - dead characters wandering around the island have to have their bodies on island (i'm not sure whether they actually have to have died there): Remi, Christian, Alex. So if Locke's body is off-island, no dead Locke to possess.

Brakhage, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 23:11 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the long con deception layers - there's no holy "island" consciousness that Ben, Widmore and Locke all believe in, but actually Jacob and Esau - the same way the "others" are Ben and Widmore duking it out (the original S1 others vs. S4 invaders).

ok so I put an image between those two lines and it isnt showing up but just imagine a boot stamping on an island's face

yeah it's funny how the implied big bad or most ominous/mysterious character has shifted over and over through the course of the show -- Ethan then Mr. Friendly then Ben then Richard then Widmore then Jacob then Jacob's enemy and so on.

u forgot the most hated character

What would be really awesome would be if the next/final Locke flashback was what happened to him immediately after the Ajira Airlines flight crashed on the Island.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i like the idea that there could be thanks to the jughead reset a 3rd locke still in a wheelchair actually...maybe it's HIS destiny to save everyone.

btw guys you realize season 6 is only THIRTEEN FUCKING DAYS AWAY!??!!!

guys I wanna do a "LOST character who you are most anxious to find out what the hell their deal is in season six" poll thread, any suggestions?

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 03:09 (fourteen years ago) link

this is a list i came up w/ of people i feel like still have nagging questions hanging over them, kinda wanna keep the options limited since there are so many Jack/Kate/etc. type characters who there's nothing left to wonder about anymore:

Charles Widmore
Christian Shepherd
Claire
Desmond
Eloise Hawking
Hurley
Ilana
Jacob
Jacob’s enemy
John Locke
Libby
Richard Alpert
Walt

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 03:13 (fourteen years ago) link

  • Vincent
  • the horse

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 03:19 (fourteen years ago) link

still think the frog that bugged Sawyer had some dark secrets

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Nikki
Paulo

Their time will come.

I think the main reason there's questions over Libby is that one time she appeared in Hurley's mental hospital it was like some big reveal. I dunno, if she'd been just sitting there quietly rocking in the background it wouldn't have been so myssteeriousss.

tehresa, Thursday, 21 January 2010 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

now you have me questioning my whole world oh my

tehresa, Thursday, 21 January 2010 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

hmmm... coffee shop in an airport? des didn't have any american dollars or something?

Roz, Thursday, 21 January 2010 04:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i feel like desmond's story is pretty well wrapped up actually.

here's a short list of things i'm pretty confident won't be addressed in season 6 that i wish they had gotten around to, maybe instead of like the jack's tattoo episode or something:

-what happened to annie (ben's ladyfriend)
-who was eko's wife (remember he said he had been married, but that she wasn't on the plane)
-how/why widmore was banished from the island
-where the fuck are the children that the others took

did you mean: fart blasters? (nickalicious), Thursday, 21 January 2010 20:52 (fourteen years ago) link

been watching from the beginning with my girlfriend who has never watched it and i am almost willing to believe by the way jack and claire interact in season 1 that just maaaaybe they had always intended them to be secret siblings.

is Annie the lady in the butcher shop?

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 20:55 (fourteen years ago) link

oh wait n/m -- i totally forgot about the Annie episode

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link

xp
No, the little girl who was in DHARMA when he joined as a boy, gave him papier mache figures as a birthday present. Yeah, I think Ben's still got a few juicy bits of backstory to go.

Surprised not much has been made of Aaron's father considering the show's themes and the significance of the baby early on.

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 21 January 2010 20:58 (fourteen years ago) link

They really could've just let Desmond and Penny ride off into the sunset after season four, but of course, the island isn't done with him... Not really sure why they did that, honestly - dude's been through enough!

My Annie guess remains that she was pregnant with Ben's kid and died in childbirth, leading to his obsession with the pregnancy research - at least we'll find out for sure this season (I think) why Ben initiated it all in S1 with the kidnappings. Pretty sure the producers said they'd finally get back to that now - makes sense with the seasonal mirroring (4/3, 5/2, 6/1), Claire coming back, I think Walt does too, at least briefly. But yeah - I do think they've been holding it back for THIS long because it'll be the final Ben flashback story - there have been too many mentions/hints about her for Annie to be dropped entirely.

There might've been an incident, but basically we know that Widmore was kicked off because of Ben - he used Widmore getting married off-island and having kids as an excuse - whatever actually happened during the 80s I think might just be too much junk to delve into at this point. But who knows, I'm still dying for a full Libby episode.
