The office is just intolerable today. Because our fan doesn't rotate, someone decided it should be "on each person for an hour" - which is funny because I've been here 3 hours now and it ain't been nowhere near me!

people who like the heat/summer are just PHR34KS. the worst are the ones who buy CHOCOLATE in this heat. hahahahahaha they walk around for hours with the pralines thinking the cool bags will help. but yeah seriously, i just don't enjoy the heat. gimme the autumn and winter, it fits my gloomy mood.

Is this hotter than that mental summer of 2003? It doesn't quite feel like it yet. Although I had to get out of the sun and into the shade at lunchtime, which isn't something that usually happens to me. Admittedly I'm not usually wearing a suit in this weather either.

I've had a fan on my desk blowing in my face all day. It's been a bit of a godsend.

Yesterday I was waiting for the bus on a bench in the shade and the breeze felt like it was coming out of an oven. Breeze begone! Also. you know it's bad when you are relived to step out of your car b/c it's cooler. the a/cs just can't keep up.

I took my Year 10 students who were melting in the heat to work in an air-conditioned computer room this morning. After half an hour they were complaining it was too cold*. You can't win sometimes.

*It is very sophisticated 21st century aircon with two settings - "On" and "Off".

I found myself doing housework at 1am as it was the only time that it felt bearable to be moving about. I made the mistake of opening the windows at night and found myself chasing huge moths round the house. Does citronella work on them? I tried burning lavender oil but it didn't seem to have any effect.

You must have a hole in one of your window screens. Wad a piece of duct tape on it.

The price of gas has me keeping the AC off and opening the windows. I don't really like all that wind and noise, but most of my driving is short hops. I can stand it.

I'm going to haul many bags of pine-bark mini-nuggets up a steep hill today, and the perverse thing is that I'm looking forward to it. Donkey work! I'll get started as soon as I can tear myself away from ILE.

Apparently dried lemon peel is good for deterring moths.

I am quite fond of the moths compared to the other bugs that have invaded in this heat - flying ants and big red spiders.

I mailordered some screens for our living room windows, but that was to keep the cats from getting OUT. It does help a bit with moths, but they get in anyway through the kitchen window, which isn't suitable for screens (opens outwards). That's all we get really, moths and occasionally wasps or daddy long legs.

Our old office had air conditioning that our office manager insisted on having on ALL YEAR ROUND. Brilliant for the three days it was actually hot enough to warrant it, horrible the rest of the time.

I'll try the dried lemon peel. I've got tilt and turn windows so screens would be no good even if the tiny scottish summer justified getting them. I remember seeing curtains made out of fine chains that were supposed to deter insects, they look pretty cool as well.

We're getting a break here today - only 33 C predicted for the high. The sun was intense on my walk to work, but the breeze was cool. Supposed to hit 41 C on Friday though, and stick there for several days. This is our typical summer weather, and I chose to move here, so I shouldn't complain, but it is such a relief when it's over.

Window screens are for buggies! You can see out of them, they are basically just metal mesh in a frame that goes on the outside of the window, so you can open your window and get the breeze but not the bugs. That and A/C are pretty much the only reasons the southern US is habitable.
