The next iteration will be called the iPad Max. Or more appropriately, the Max iPad.

Jeez, dudes, it's like you've never seen an Apple launch before. Remember?

1. Launch. Grumble grumble. "It doesn't have w, x, y, z." "It's too expensive"
2. Early adopters buy, most people play with and kind of want but, y'know, see 1.
3. A year goes buy, 2nd gen comes out. It has w, x, and y. Early adopters have been using it so it doesn't feel all weird to have one.
4. Most of us buy the 2ng gen. A few will grumble endlessly about the lack of z, the rest just use the thing.
5. Apple makes a fuckton of money.

so is stet the only one here who's getting one of these at 1.0 then? elvis?

Can't work it into my budget right now. I'm looking at replacing my laptop in the next couple of months (coming up on four years old) and since coding is where the $$$$ comes from then that gets priority.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

yes, i agree. if positioned as an e-reader with iphone-esque bells and whistles, it looks more attractive.

innovation ain't a feature list. let's try the thing before we say anything we're gonna regret, k?

isn't this still cheaper than a kaosilator or monome whatever those electro DJ things are?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i swear this just happened: i was watching shep's show on fox news and they brought on some fox business channel schlub to talk about the ipad so i flipped up one channel to msnbc and a tampax commercial was playing

Kaoss Pad is $400 (roughly?) Would rather have iPad controller.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the prospect of interesting apps really changes my perception of what these things should cost. If it's another thing to browse the web on, y'know, fuk u I won't buy what you tell me. If it's a Kaoss pad, robust field photo editor, etc that also just happens to play music and surfs the web anywhere, then fuck yeah that's cheap as hell.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

there are some amazing audio/synth apps on the iphone, there's a great potential for the ipad in this area..

Deluxe Merseybeat Wig (Jack Battery-Pack), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:48 (fourteen years ago) link

to me this just looks like a cool fun thing to keep around the house or throw in my bag - not a replacement for my computer but a sort of sci-fi-style all-purpose entertainment/media/fuckin' around device. and i think there will be some really cool apps for it. not that different than a big ipod touch, no, but ipod touches and iphones have so much potential that is severely limited only by their screen space.

To me the tradeoff on all this is pretty straightforward -- one reason why I like the iPhone a LOT is precisely because it is a phone, scaled as such -- something you just put in your pocket. In contrast I have never really felt any desire to haul something like a laptop around wherever I go.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^agree with all of that, slocki.

I kind of agree with slocki but then I think what if I'm browsing ilx at home and someone posts a sendspace? seems a bit silly to have to grab my laptop and so in which case why aren't I just browsing on it in the first place

what about those crazy harmony remote controls? I could see some dude with a $1000 remote control doing the math, though what kind of dude who can spend $1k on a remote control cares about saving $?

Yeah, the presentation for this was actually kinda stodgy outside of the Brushes demo. Mail, web surfing, BFD.
