WTF is up with that bezel? Ugliest piece Apple has produced in ... erm ... a long time.

etaeoe, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Both the Contacts and Maps apps look terrific. iPod and Photos very WTF.

etaeoe, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:49 (fourteen years ago) link

One more thing: iPhone SDK 3.2 download? Am I blind? Where is the download link?

etaeoe, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:51 (fourteen years ago) link

bezel isnt great looking but its practical. feels like the kind of thing that will get suddenly smaller and be one of those big deal v2 things.

max, Thursday, 28 January 2010 00:52 (fourteen years ago) link

you have to be a registered developer, etaeoe ($99).

keynote stream's up

cozen: that mode is fkn awesome; i've been using it for months

it's probably going to take about 10 minutes for somebody to hack this and load a full featured snow leopard install

I think I would look pretty psychotic using this in a balaklava, that's for sure

Doesn't anyone remember this?

Apple's bought itself a chip company, P.A. Semi, that could make chips for future iPods and iPhones. The company was founded by Dan Dobberpuhl, lead designer of Alpha chips, who last year announced a 64-bit dual core processor that is said to be about 300% more efficient than the nearest competition, using only 5 to 13 watts at 2GHz.

Products using the chips won't arrive for a year, at least, but we can assume that Apple wouldn't spend $278 million without some plans to use 'em soon as it made sense, and I'm sure Intel and ARM aren't stoked. The negotiations, which finished recently, took place in The Steve's home. Owning its own chip design is an interesting move. While the iPhone's had a lot of off the shelf componentry, it makes sense that working on its own internal hardware could yield better devices. Or a PowerPC repeat..which is the architecture I believe that the above processor is built on.

More research on that chip shows how it achieves such power efficiency. From Ars: "For instance, the chip sports over 25,000 clock gates so that clock pulses to different regions of the processor can be shut off dynamically to save power...All of the PA6T's major on-die components have their own separate clock and voltage domains, so that the L1, L2, DRAM controller, I/O subsystem, and each of the two cores can all be placed in different low-power states independently of one another."

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago) link

So in a quick survey of people at work, roughly 49% love it and 49% think it sucks (I'm the sole neutral 2%). Same numbers as for the iPhone on its first release so I'm declaring it a hit.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:16 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I remember that...seems kinda weird they would be going down a PPC path again xp

Ha! Good find.

etaeoe, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

LONDON — Warren East, chief executive officer of ARM Holdings plc (Cambridge, England), has declined to name the company that has taken a multiyear architecture license for ARM's current and future technologies. But East gave enough clues while speaking to financial analysts on Wednesday (July 30) to show clearly that Apple is a contender.

OS X (and by extension iPhone OS) is pretty code portable these days so switching processors isn't a big deal as it once was.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:26 (fourteen years ago) link

You know what? FUCK FLASH AND ALL THOSE WHO DEVELOP IN IT.

Flash is such a shoddy piece of work no matter how badass of a Flex developer you think you are. Gawd I can't wait until it dies.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Seriously, whenever I have to deal with Flex/Flash it feels like someone poured a bucket of magnetic sand over my laptop.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link

made the switch to html5 on youtube and it's been so much nicer; agree with you Elvis, but no flash means no hulu + bunch of other things

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:30 (fourteen years ago) link

if this thing takes off, hulu+the rest are going to have to buckle. BBC had a quicktime version of iPlayer out pretty damn quick after iPhone launched.

Hulu is going to be a non-entity exactly one day after they start charging for subscriptions. They haven't set a day for this other than "sometime in 2010" but that will be the end of it.

Aye. And the YouTube player was already in there from the beginning.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 01:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think this is gonna do well indeed. The lower-than-expected pricing was definitely a good move. I guess this means the Macbook Air is getting phased out?

Nhex, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Castle defense games, too. Can't wait to play "Plants vs. Zombies" on it.

It's difficult to say. The MBA was always kind of a nichey machine that Apple-watchers never seemed to appreciate deriding it with a "it's so expensive compared with a $999 full-featured MacBook" without acknowledging the subset of people who travel a lot and need a lightweight laptop. Case in point, a friend of mine who travels back and forth from NY to CA all the time and works as a proofreader/researcher. She got a MacBook Air and loves it. An iPad isn't functional enough for that - you can't sync a phone, iPod, dump pictures out of a camera, etc. with one.

Potentially, parts of the MBA hardware development could trickle down into the standard MacBook but Apple is pretty adamant about keeping consumer/professional lines separate. If it's any example, everyone was predicting the death of the Mac Mini for years until it found life as a low-impact server (and a really fantastic one too!). I hope the MBA sticks around, but it does need a price drop. I'd say $1199. It's not going to cut into MBP sales (MBP purchasers need the ports/screensize).

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Flopped, didn't it?

Nobody has agreed on a set of yardsticks to measure if it's a flop or not.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:35 (fourteen years ago) link

FWIW, the 64GB 3G iPad is in the price neighborhood of a MacBook anyway.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:38 (fourteen years ago) link

FWIW, the title they wanted to use was "Lawn of the Dead," but Romero said no.

but ya... syncing an iphone/ipod would seem to be a necc. feature

scent of a wolfman (s1ocki), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:14 (fourteen years ago) link

I remember reading the iPad will have some sort of 'shared file system' with your Mac, for putting Pages docs and pdfs etc. so maybe you can still download sendspaces on the fly?

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:28 (fourteen years ago) link

otherwise crytime

scent of a wolfman (s1ocki), Thursday, 28 January 2010 05:54 (fourteen years ago) link

It's not really a filesystem: apps can say they want to share, then when you connect the iPad it appears on desktop like a USB stick, w/ a folder for each app that's registered. Apps can put files in there, you can put files in for app.

I bet I could add sendspace etc to zing w/out too much trouble, if the new version of webkit allows devs to save files (current one doesn't)

My dad was emailing me WATCH THE VIDEO AW MAN THIS IS AWESOME!
I replied I didn't care much for it... until I came to the bit about ebooks. That and movies. Well AWESOME. I want one cause I can knit 'n' use the ipad (urgh what a horrid name) in my bed that way.
Crap, I'll need to "lose" my kindle now. lolol. My husband said:"It's about the same size." I said it wasn't.
Now I notice it is. Well, crap crap. I think I'll get it once our laptop (mac pro laptop) gives up. It's nearing the end of its life anyway.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Thursday, 28 January 2010 12:30 (fourteen years ago) link

liked the piano rendition of 'in between days' in the video! its use seems to be limited to sitting down with it resting in your raw denim-coated lap. disappointed to see no, cool, apple-designed note-taking app, which I assume some app store developer will have out soon. ibook app seems kinda bland. the home button placement makes sense to me, as it'll be under either thumb in landscape mode. like that it has an IPS screen - true 8 bit color! - when they can't even be bothered to put one in their macbook pros.

what sucks though is that it uses a micro-sim, so you can't just swap your current sim card into it - fuck paying for another data plan when I've already got an unlimited data plan going on my iphone. so far everybody on the internets is calling this the 'third device' which is otm; at first I thought, hey I can sell my iphone and just get a really cheap caller/texter - but then I realized there will be times when I'm gonna go out without my bag or whatever but will still need to check google maps or yelp.

NYT/other content looked kind of...boring? looked just like website.

wondering what major changes iphone OS 4.0 is going to bring w/r/t iPad.

also, fuck this if I'm gonna need to transcode everything with handbrake just to get it to play/VLC needs to release an iphone app.

I'm also getting a kind of 'nintendo wii' vibe from this where people are quick to dismiss it, but within 5 minutes of playing with it they'll be bowled over. I dunno - can't wait for this thing to make it to the stores to have a play with it

caek, Thursday, 28 January 2010 13:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I wish I was in school again to see how this would slot in to academic life. but you'd probably need to carry around an external keyboard to use with it. and I'd feel stupid and would probably make fun of myself for it, like I used to make fun of the kids who would bring palm pilots and then connect them to lol heug folding keyboards which looked really painful to type on.
