loved that one of the names on the wedding party was CADENA

coulda just been andrew wk to me
in that case, it wouldn't be a lifechanging piece of comedy. the anti-reagan pastiche of sub-dead kennedys cali hardcore bands is the thing. i didn't think it was that subtle! the first line is about reagan's fascist regime or something. ha, take that alexander haig!

Guys if that wedding band sketch wasn't funny to you, I really don't know how to help you. I haven't laughed that hard at the show in years. Years.

loool ok the band was called "crisis of conformity" that's awesome

ashton in suit and tie singing "yo, maybe i should, like, put on my suit, and my tieeee, and eat a happy meal!". and then grabbing his tie for emphasis when he sings "tie." good heads up by ashton wrt grohl's mic, too. i'd like to see a rehearsal version of this whole thing; maybe the lyrics are more audible.
abby elliot looked v v pretty as a redhead, btw.
sudekis' part in the sketch made it that much more awesome. if he had been horrified or offended then it would have been like "lol, these fucking guys, on stage," but his responsiveness kinda implied that no, it's dads pretty much everywhere who are like this.
armisen did a passable mike muir on the "institutionalized" middle bit.
― slugbuggy, Monday, 8 February 2010 14:49 (fourteen years ago) link
or maybe that's just a generalized socal hardcore voice, idk, like nowadays there's a general pop punk voice that's not really specific to blink or whatever.
i had to look up cadena but ha!
― slugbuggy, Monday, 8 February 2010 14:53 (fourteen years ago) link
armisen had the hardcore singer jerkaround dance down pat
― max, Monday, 8 February 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link
ok now i get cadena
― harbl, Monday, 8 February 2010 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link
^^ lol, took me until after the sketch to get that, too
Just watched "What is Burn Notice?" sketch on Hulu. Sudekis is hilarious in that.

was the joke of the wedding band sketch that hardcore is old enough to be played by dads now or
Part of me wondered if this sketch was in any way inspired by having Them Crooked Vultures as musical guest.
I laughed like hell at it, partly because of the level of detail, but I really don't think the joke would be lost on people who knew nothing about hardcore.

good heads up by ashton wrt grohl's mic, too. i'd like to see a rehearsal version of this whole thing; maybe the lyrics are more audible.
i second-guessed it later, but totally assumed at first that this was an intentional acknowledgement of faulty mics at live hardcore shows
― da croupier, Monday, 8 February 2010 20:37 (fourteen years ago) link
don't forget grohl was in Scream as a teen!

the one scream song on the american hardcore soundtrack SMOKES
yeah i figured the broken mic was a planned thing

between scream, nirvana, tom petty, probot, killing joke and TCV, Dave Grohl is kind of the kevin bacon of rock

ok maybe not old lesbian, but his usual goatee has a lot to do with that. and it's not like the Foo Fighters are that much better than HBO Original Movies at this point
― da croupier, Monday, 8 February 2010 20:52 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah grohl is way better than bacon, but in terms of the six degrees thing i bet you could totally do that with him
― XX Decontrol (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 8 February 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link
she's not old! he also doesn't look like her. he's just way less gross than kevin bacon and i will defend dave grohl as long as i need to.

Also, Armisen didn't really go all in. Imagine if Farley or Belushi had that role.
i think armisen's look is part of what made it so funny, though. farley or belushi as fat screaming dad yeah ha, but a guy who looks like a totally straight-laced uptight father of the bride type unleashing that was awesome.
― bwoling and drifting (tehresa), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 01:12 (fourteen years ago) link
i mean, i'm just saying he barely unleashed. Farley and Belushi unleashed more in their Meat Loaf and Joe Cocker bits that Armison as L.A. hardcore punk dad

ok the 'we are the world' open was genuine rofls -- esp pinning the whole climax of the song on fonzworth bentley -- brilliant
