Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates at 11:00 a.m. EST on Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Clubhouse in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Tiger plans to discuss his past and his future, and he plans to apologize for his behavior.

While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife, he also recognizes that he has hurt and let down a lot of other people who were close to him. He also let down his fans. He wants to begin the process of making amends, and that's what he's going to discuss.

His remarks will be open to a press pool for live coverage. It is NOT a news conference

While Tiger feels that what happened is fundamentally a matter between him and his wife,

a couple of Playboy models, two pornstars, twelve club girls, a couple dozen hookers and possibly a midget.

this is all so very stupid. let a ho be a ho. i feel bad for is kids and all (and to a lesser degree his wife), but screw all this rehab and apologizing to golf bs. respect your family and yourself, dude. get a divorce, see your kids as much as possible, and try not to catch teh herps.

gotta say, that was the most non-blame-shifting apology I've ever seen from a pro athlete. also, I liked the "I need to get back to my Buddhist faith" and not "my Christian faith".

i thought he did pretty well.

kinda robotic but i sorta get the vibe he is just kinda dull and uncomfortable with public speaking in general....

but yeah the text didn't really duck anything i thought.

I was at the gym this morning and was furious to see this fool walk out after the ABC NEWS SPECIAL REPORT banner popped up like some serious shit went down.

Tiger Woods will be speaking to a small group of friends, colleagues and close associates

No one find this a really odd set up? That small group of close associates and family, and tv companies broadcasting it all? That's some really weird PR.

Also, don't think his 'friends at Accenture' (or indeed fellow pros) were too pleased at him scheduling this during the WGC Match Play.

I didn't and don't want to give this guy more credit than he's due but I think Dan's hearing what I was hearing. Actual contrition, what a concept. It's worth hearing instead of just reading a transcript.

I don't know if I was more impressed with "going back to Buddhism will make me a better person" or "despite this, my family is still off limits, assholes"

in the office we were wondering if he chose today to apologize because all the late night shows + nbc are on hiatus right now (except ferguson and kimmel)

max, Friday, 19 February 2010 18:54 (fourteen years ago) link

think it was cuz hes due back in rehab tomorrow iirc. plus yea, think accenture dropped him & he may want 2 stick it 2 them and steal attn from their tourney (tho i dont really buy that)

^^this. i <3 buddhism but one of the best books on it i've read thus far (Zen At War) basically puts the lie to the idea that it is somehow less full of shit than any other spiritual practice

nitzer ebbebe (gbx), Friday, 19 February 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno... the japanese context/syncretism with warrior nobility is pretty unique and not really enough to make the case imo. still may or may not be true, but Buddhism does seem fundamentally less well-suited to command/control/holy war.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 February 2010 06:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i kinda buy the "he's not a great public speaker" argument but this was so painful to watch, idk if it was "insincere" as much as it was just so clueless..."self aware" nowhere near the money

ha xp

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 February 2010 06:14 (fourteen years ago) link

i really think mcgwire had the best game plan for this kind of thing -- put out a prelim press release where you lay out the facts so you don't have people reading into your emotion and stuff like that & then do a one on one w/ a journalist you trust, who will push you a bit but won't impale you

J0rdan S., Saturday, 20 February 2010 06:16 (fourteen years ago) link

seriously! i mean if he just sent out an open letter of the transcript to this it would have been 100x better...still would be completely devoid of humanity but it would be way harder to tell at the very least

Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 20 February 2010 17:04 (fourteen years ago) link

seriously! i mean if he just sent out an open letter of the transcript to this it would have been 100x better

if he just apologized privately to his wife and anyone else he personally knows who's been hurt by his actions, that would be 100X better. tiger woods doesn't owe "the public" an apology. he's said as much (in a nicer way) when this story began to surface, and i imagine that's why he sounded so stilted and awkward at this ridiculous press conference.
