I dare any of you to spend a year in Nebraska.
― Darin, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 06:46 (fourteen years ago) link
Spent two weeks near Crawford, Nebraska digging up fossils. Liked Nebraska a lot and will defend it here.
Will either vote Iowa or Indiana here.

back to PA: there is something uniquely depressing about those old steel-mill/coal-mining towns that have been gutted by economic changes from the 70s onwards. esp. if you are old enough to remember a city like Allentown before it really hit the skids. and reading may be one of the most depressing places in the USA -- it's become crack/meth heaven in the middle of Amish Country.
― there can be only but steam that smells of shit and weaklingness (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link
Allentown's like 30-40 miles from Amish Country, tho

oh i see
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link
you didn't capitalize Reading--i was reading too fast
anyway, i've spent time in the Allentown area and it doesn't seem that much more depressing than say, Gary Indiana (which seems much more depressing)
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link
but Gary is the gold standard for depressing, failed industrial towns

yes but did it not also spawn world-famous singer and guitarist toriano "tito" jackson?

From the latest o_0 mailout I got from Feministing - it has to be Utah, for attempting to criminalise miscarriage. Um. I can't make my emoticon go o_0 enough for that.

wait waht
that can't be right
― Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 16:56 (fourteen years ago) link
okay, based on what I've been able to find about this, saying that this bill criminalizes miscarriage is gross distortion of the bill
having said that, the bill itself is incredibly gross and shouldn't even be under consideration
― Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link
Yup. Because SOME WOMMENS might be using "miscarriages" as a way of trying to give themselves abortions.

that's crazy, but it also seems like the kind of thing that will get shot down in court
― Mr. Que, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago) link
so looking at this some more, this is totally introducing a massive legal quagmire that is going to haunt women in Utah for years
good job, Utah!
― Jack the Dude-Kicker (HI DERE), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link
i never planned on going to Utah, anyway. yet another reason why not to do so.
que: i don't doubt that Gary is more depressing than Allentown. i've just never been to Gary, and i've gone to Allentown and other old PA towns a lot since i was a kid so what i was getting at was my own personal experience.
― there can be only but steam that smells of shit and weaklingness (Eisbaer), Wednesday, 24 February 2010 19:03 (fourteen years ago) link
If you don't go to Utah because it has more than its fair share of morans, you're only doing a disservice to yourself.

I was born in Pittsburgh. I come from a long line of steelworkers, my dad being the last of that generation. Pittsburgh, and its surrounding areas, were kind of drab. But I heard the city has changed since I moved in '82. I read in some money magazine, maybe Fortune, maybe Forbes, that Pittsburgh is one of the least hit by the economic crises of all the major cities in the US.

I was recently in Pittsburgh and, while I couldn't really figure out what business were there that were keeping the city running, it had way more of a carefree sports party vibe than I was expecting. I'd love to go back during football season.

Big businesses here are UPMC, Highmark insurance and the universities. Alcoa, PPG, Bayer and a bunch of other materials companies have presence here but not in the city, this means the city has almost no business tax base.

I didn't forget US Steel, it hardly classes as major industry round here, the US Steel Tower has UPMC on the top of it nowadays.
cultural activity is limited to setting fire to things after steelers/pens games
