Now that's just cruel.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Monday, 11 July 2005 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

one time my downstairs neighbors had a party which was attended by a bunch of non-campus inner city gangstas. there was one fire alarm at approx. 1 am, caused by smoking, during which i made friends with one of the gangstas (he was wearing a blue velour tracksuit and gold jewelry) and watched his buddies urinate on our building. at 5:30 am, we had another fire alarm caused by someone being pushed into the fire alarm thing and breaking the glass during a GANG FIGHT. when i came downstairs there was someone speeding away in a car. a few days later i had to describe my velour tracksuited friend to the police, sorry big guy. the moral of the story is that sometimes when your neighbors are loud, an adventure happens.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Monday, 11 July 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm usually pretty tolerant but one apt building i was in had a load of undergrads who would blast music, and people would be (loudly) coming and going from their apartment and hanging out outside (climbing the walls of the apt building and throwing baseballs through people's windows) until ... 4 or 5 AM. that's fucking unreasonable. and yet i just sort politely ran downstairs in my pjs to ask them to keep it down. what a dork. eventually we called the cops.

Hahahahahaha "an adventure happens"!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 July 2005 22:52 (eighteen years ago) link

oh did i mention that this was 4 or 5 AM on a weeknight?! which may have been their spring break or something but was definitely not ours.

the nice thing is that when the cops came to clean up the worst of the debacles, we ended up meeting some of our other neighbors who were likewise irritated by the undergrads' bullshit.

When we had problems with this back in a rough area of Essex my sister marched over there at 3AM with a fuckin mallet and threatened to cave their skulls in. After that there was no more music and they even moved out swiftly.

Ladies, have I got crazies?
Screaming young babies
No piece and no quiet
I got T.V.'s, saxophone playing
Groaning and straining
With the trouble and strife

this is hilarious! this morning when jon told me how silly the british are about noise, i poo-pooed him, but now i understand. thanks jon, and british people: take a chill pill.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 00:56 (eighteen years ago) link

come on, it's a relatively crowded (by North American standards, certainly) place. with everybody right next to each other, surely people need to be more considerate. besides, one loud party a month is the absolute maximum anyone should have to tolerate.

yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 01:22 (eighteen years ago) link

It's hilarious until you've lived it monthes on end.

you know what they say - you cant control what other people do, you can only control your reaction. if yr trying to sleep just buy some freakin ear plugs.

(on the other hand, they live in Shoreditch, so maybe any of their neighbours who haven't lived there more than a decade deserve every last decibel)

haha because they've all moved the shoreditch and married all the women and stole all the jobs?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Or buy a phone and call the cops.

hey Hari, which particular rough area of Essex?

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:12 (eighteen years ago) link

I had upstairs neighbors who were really really annoying and a bunch of allergy ridden hippies. I lived on a hall with 3 weed dealers. Whenever someone would smoke weed or cigarettes on the hall, they would call the cops and complain about marijuana. I was woken up 5 times by fucking pigs who wouldn't take "NO GOOD NIGHT" for an answer. Fuck cops and fuck busybody neighbors.

oh noes my weekend is ruined!!

(also they can't possibly be hippies if they don't like weed)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken, America is full of people who privilege their food intolerances and allergies beyond any reasonable expectation. Many of them are non-smoking hippies.

People who priviledge their vices above other people's health, classic or dud?

MIS Information (kate), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 11:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I am not British, but I live here and I get irritated with my noisy neighbours sometimes too. My theory is that the population is crowded into a relatively small country, so space is a commodity in many parts of the UK. This can make you want to protect your peace and quiet.

But it does feel like a lot of people are missing basic manners. I try to keep relatively quiet, because I know the soundproofing is crap in our building. I don't let my doors slam or run through the halls screeching or writing "drugs R here!!" on the wall when I'm drunk. I don't throw the junk mail I don't want onto the floor. (Someone did this in our building - my boyfriend was so pissed off he cleaned it up himself and it was a whole bin bag full from one flat - wanker...)

We pay a fair whack for living in the centre but sometimes it feels like we're stuck with a bunch of students.

People here can be uptight about things like fences and boundaries too. My mum was visiting and stepped into someone's drive to take a photo so she could get a better shot. The woman came out and bit her head off for daring to venture onto her property.

flats are rubbish, Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:10 (eighteen years ago) link

agree about "flats are rubbish." in the extremely unlikely event of my making any money out of this bloody book, it'll go towards a house, and probably one a long way away from london.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 12:23 (eighteen years ago) link

If you have a fucking allergy problem, don't live in a building with other people or fucking talk to people rather than fucking calling the cops on them all the fucking time because you're too chickenshit to confront someone about their problems.

And, as I said, I was not smoking weed.

Gareth, I hope these thoughtless fuckers who have house parties till 7am aren't your friends.

Actually, they're mine ;)

From the outside, it didn't look like there were any neighbours at all. But then they were very stupid indeed to leave all the windows wide fucking open.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha, in any case, I lived for a year with a brothel on one side and a mentally ill lady who screamed in the night on the other. We had some great parties.

Nothing kills the mood like the neighbors working on their trucks while blasting Mexican dance hall music when you are trying to have early morning sex.
-- jocelyn (nalra...) (webmail), July 11th, 2005 11:49 AM. (Jocelyn) (later)

This is magic.

I lived above some depraved people in Paris once who woke my ex-wife and I one night by contriving somehow to shatter their toilet. Usually they awakened us by blasting Frank Zappa and attempting to argue violently over the music. During the day, I smoked hash with them. They were bordering on being completely socially retarded but they were quaint somehow.

Until recently, the neighbor in the building abutting (and a mirror image of ours) us would stay up all night (on speed, we suspected) chattering, crying, screaming or laughing while watching TV, sometimes all of the above. She moved before we had the temerity to call a swat team.

Our new downstairs neighbor, in our 4 person TIC (essentially a co-op) is a nice, warm seeming lady. After her first night, she called to apologize for her girlfriend's dog who had, supposedly barked in the middle of the night. After less than 4 days in the place she asked my gf to (a) walk more softly (we have over 75% of the floor covered in rugs) and (b) close the door more gently when she leaves at 6:40 am. What irked me was that our previous neighbor, with whom we had conversations about sound, never heard us, and our new neighbor, who moved from the burbs, didn't give herself any time to acclimatize herself to her new environment before bitching out.

Jon. jesus christ. at least half of these people couldn't sleep well right now even if they shot up with horse tranqulizers. have you been paying attention to anything?

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Jon lives in NOIZELAND where apparently no one has any sensitivity for world events or the goings on of "yoorpeens".

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Kim, that's an interesting line of "reasoning!"

Weren't some of the "Britishes" upthread justifying their rightous middle class agnst by complaining that they lived in the "suburbs"? If so I don't know why "terror anxiety" should be any more applicable to them.

And using "terror" as a justification for inane shit is fucked up to begin with.

no tech! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Um Jon, people like Kate are extremely stressed because they're personal friends of Liz and are in a great deal of pain right now, and your lame "its just a bit pf PARTYING geez get a life" jibes are a bit rude in the circumstances dont you think?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Or did you actually have no idea what was going on?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Jon, it isn't "terror anxiety". please do yourself a favour, go quietly and actually read the London threads, and then perhaps make some attempt to stop embarassing yourself.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:46 (eighteen years ago) link

i really don't see how any of what jon says has anything to do with the london threads.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:47 (eighteen years ago) link

He's having an unneccesary go at Kate, who has said under the circumstances she's so stressed out she needs sleep and cant get it, etc, and he's acting like she's whining over nothing!

That aside, I think saying "we have a RIGHT to be as noisy as we want on weekends, screw you guys" is kind of lameass.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:49 (eighteen years ago) link

it's as "lameass" as constantly complaining about noisy neighbors without actually doing anything about it.
