My toaster oven is small and only heats the tops of things.

Jordan, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan, are you saying that hot water = gas is on?

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

xp Then your gas is most likely already on, unless you have an electric water heater, which would blow my fucking miiiiiiiiind.

In my experience, the gas is not physically turned off, it just goes back to being billed to the owner of the building. Turning the gas off is counter-productive for both parties: the company would lose $, the landlord would have a big hassle to deal with if/when it got cold out.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

But don't take my word for it, it's just how it seems to me.

The toaster oven is perfect for summer cooking since you can warm/reheat small amounts of things, bake 9 cookies, etc. without heating up the whole house.

In the winter, though, I'm going to feel pretty pathetic with just my toaster oven. ;_;

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe I will call People's Energy back.

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Here's the original of that, Jordan!

(and thanks - I like april march)

KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Our convection thing is a bit larger than a toaster oven & so we can actually cook, for example, a frozen pizza.

sweet tater, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Did April March have an album cover that looked just like a Margo Guryan album cover? Jaymc, please investigate. I am proofing midterms.

I have no room for frozen pizza :(

La Lechera, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

If you turn the knob on your stove when the pilot light isn't lit, and the pilot light flickers like an electric current and goes flick-flick-flick, what does that mean?

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

My oven is broken and I can't afford a new one, so I've been using a toaster oven.

me too!

dan, people's energy can cut off the gas at the meter, so unless the hotwater heater is in the unit (as mine was on augusta but isn't here) john could have hot h20 but not cooking gas. that's why a lot of places on craigslist say you pay cooking gas instead of just gas.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

John, you and Kr are welcome to come cook at our place.

KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks, Sarah. Lol @ that video.

not related, that sound is the sound of the ignitors engaging. they're kind of like spark plugs for an oven, creating the initial flame to ignite the gas.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Hm, interesting. It doesn't surprise me that they'd have a sneaky way of doing it.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost So it's not an indicator that gas is on or off?

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Like in our building there are 4 gas meters in the basement and 3 water heaters. Three of the meters are for the tenants, the last one is for the basement, I think. Each apt. has it's own heater.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

^the woman in that video looks eerily like my friend's wife (also a singer)

Jordan, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Man, I have been making the its/it's mistake a lot lately. I need a vacation.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost So it's not an indicator that gas is on or off?

it would indicate to me that the stove is capable of lighting gas but no gas is getting to the ignitors. whether that means the gas is turned off or there's an obstruction i couldn't tell you. i'd bet dollars to donuts that the gas is off however.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:52 (sixteen years ago) link

ok, i forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer so i'm going to go sell some more 7"s and go to jewel.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah, does anyone know if permanent records buys vinyl? i'm really sick of reckless.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a tiny thing but the phrasing of the April March version (just delaying the second line by an 8th note) totally makes it for me.

Jordan, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:54 (sixteen years ago) link

dollars to donuts.... your dollars and my donuts? i always wonder what the specifics of that wager are.

Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I was trying to light the pilot light with a lighter, instead of my usual method of lighting the tip of a dry piece of spaghetti and using that as a makeshift match (no spaghetti or even real matches in the apartment), so I'm not sure it won't actually light.

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 19:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow. I never would have thought to use spaghetti. Very resourceful you are.

Jesse, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

anyone know when that dominick's at chicago and damen is supposed to open? that would be very very convenient for me.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

its open

deej, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

when did that happen? i walked by there on sunday! damn that would be handy.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i have a working oven and anyone who ever wanted to come over and cook at my place would be very welcome too.

JuliaA, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

to, rather.

JuliaA, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

It was open as of Monday night when I walked home from the train.

My oven/stove is the only modern appliance in my apartment, it is awesome.

Jordan, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

It opened this past weekend. I only know because we got coupons in the mail.

KitCat, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

i should check my mail. was it this past weekend that i walked by? because me and amy were literally standing at the corner of damen and chicago talking about how much more convenient it would be for me to go there than to the jewel at milwaukee and ashland.

i just checked my wallet, my dominick's card is nowhere to be found. dang.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Thanks for the offers, Sarah and Julia, but I talked to Kr and I think she is going to go to her parents' house this weekend to cook.

I called People's Energy back and tried to see if there really wasn't an earlier date they could come out. I made my frustration at the situation very clear -- being without cooking gas for 10 days is unreasonable -- but all they said was that it's a busy time of year.

jaymc, Thursday, 4 October 2007 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

don't count on getting someone out faster.

if you call customer service at people's gas and make your inconvenience clear with management, sometimes you can get some money off since they're not holding up their end of the deal in hooking you up promptly, despite your prior efforts to have the transition go smoothly.

it's what i've been doing with comcast. i've gotten a good bit of my bill taken off because of their stunning incompetence.

JuliaA, Thursday, 4 October 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

new dominick's? chock full o'honeys.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link

river wolf, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

as one who is used to the ghettoized jewel in wicker park, it was a stark change. place seems nice, but smaller than it seems from the outside.

also, what's up with the russian women in the ukrainian village? the 15 year olds look 40 and the 50 year olds look 30. VERY CONFUSING.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I need to go back to that little store kitty-corner from Tuman's. There was an incredibly fine cashier working there the only time I went in the place. Plus they make their own sausage so that's a plus, too.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:58 (sixteen years ago) link

Also she was VERY eastern euro, barely a word of english dropped out of her mouth, but man what a smile.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Of course now they'll probably be run out of business by that Dominick's.

dan m, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:02 (sixteen years ago) link

GENERAL QUESTION:

WHERE TO

* SHOT REPAIR FOR CAR TIRE
* LAUNDROMAT WIF INTERNETS
* GIRLFRIEND LOL

river wolf, Thursday, 4 October 2007 23:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I like the 60, 90, and 120 minute IPA. It really depends on what flavor and alcohol level that I want. The 60 minute is a great session beer, the others for more special days.

Jeff, Friday, 5 October 2007 00:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I was kidding about s'mores. I've never made them.

Jeff, Friday, 5 October 2007 00:03 (sixteen years ago) link

lol @ "session beers"

mostly because it's so completely accurate.

naw, the russians/ukrainians/poles in the neighborhood don't go to chain stores, there are a bunch of ethnic places on chicago and a couple more on western. no one speaks english in any of the places, it's like a totally separate world.
