$90 might be doable since we went the "cheap" route last year and ended up getting a case of champagne at DC bar prices anyway. I have to talk to the boss.

Spink, Friday, 30 December 2005 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I feel you dogg but Danomi is half-unemployed at the mo, as Green Giant informed me dropping two c-notes is not a fun option for them to think about.

TOMBOT, Friday, 30 December 2005 18:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Forgot about them. Its easy to do when you live 15 miles from someone that never returns your calls or go anywhere unless you pick them up.

Spink, Friday, 30 December 2005 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't mind doing the Front Page thing myself personally considering that we probably spent $90 a person (WITHOUT food) last year but if there's some good alternative I have no problem with that. I really don't care cos I can't drink much anyway.

When do we next FAP?

quincie, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Great, it's 2pm and I haven't had a chance to eat anything today!

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago) link

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:09 (eighteen years ago) link

dood doesn't LM provide, like, endless free snax?

quincie, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 19:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I feel like I've been on a monthlong gravy diet, and thus am never eating again. At least until Super Bowl chili.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:49 (eighteen years ago) link

i am not drinking for at least a few days. probably

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Is Marion Barry doing so, after being robbed?

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Somehow I feel unsatisfied with the world knowing that the odds are strongly against the robbery of Marion Barry being connected in any way with the Abramoff scandal. It would all be so much more entertaining if it were otherwise.

Anyway, why is K Street the lobbying district? What does it mean?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

because it's k-corrupt? i dunno.

out of curiosity (honestly), what are the notorious DC strips for prostitution? it seems like something i should know after living here this long.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

You mean *cough* massage parlors *cough*, right?

ng-unit, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Supposedly most of the lobbying rackets that make up "K Street" aren't even on the real K St anymore, making it some kind of displaced synecdoche thing like "Madison Avenue".

I got a Subway sandwich on K St once, but no influence was being peddled, just that funny-smelling bread.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:15 (eighteen years ago) link

why is K Street the lobbying district?

lots of office buildings near the White House and executive agencies? easy on-off for out-of-district traffic?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I work on K Street. It's a nonstop circus of intrigue, influence peddling and backroom deals. Also my buidling has a Vie de France downstairs. Vie de France, people. Welcome to the big leagues.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I once worked there. Lotsa law firms. But has anybody gone to this place:

"A few blocks from MCI Center, Abramoff also wined and dined politicians and their aides at Signatures, his expensive Pennsylvania Avenue restaurant, billing tribal clients for hundreds of thousands of dollars in meals there, sources familiar with the billings said."

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 18:57 (eighteen years ago) link

A former housemate of mine (subletter. lawyer. right wing asshole.) was so proud of himself because he was taking his girlfriend (who he was cheating on) and some out of town friends who thought they were big shots to a "political restaurant." I said, so, uh, dude, what's on the menu at a political restaurant? Now I know.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll take that garden sandwich with a pickle and an appropriations rider, thank you very much!

Speaking of which, the Capitol Steps make me want to die.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to walk by Signatures all the time, it's right down by the Navy Memorial. I'd look at the clientele and wonder to myself how come nobody under 50 ever appeared to eat or drink there.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

The Capitol Steps are unbearable. So is the Wonkette's novel, apparently. There's a lot of stuff that could be funny about DC - so many people taking themselves so seriously! - but nothing funny has been done with it.

Abramoff's film noir black trench coat and fedora getup was interesting, though. Like he thought he would try hard to play the villain to the hilt, except he's rather portly and the hat doesn't fit properly and it's slightly clumsy and sad instead of badass.

Abramoff always looks like he's about to cry! Now he's off to sit in the dark with a bottle of Jim Beam and listen to, uh.. some depressing maudlin dadrock, like Billy Joel or something.

OHNOES WHERE'S THE WHITE BELT?

I mean I'm just trying to picture how maudlin and depressing these golf trips and fancy dinners and skyboxes must have been all along, you know? Bunch of blowhard Republicans with bad taste hanging around trying to impress each other.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 19:56 (eighteen years ago) link

i went to a small republican lobbyist group's christmas party about eight years ago--it was the most fake, disturbing and hilarious scene ever. so many little ralph reeds!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 20:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I ate at Signatures once. The food was excellent and very creative - the chef (who has an upcoming appearance on Iron Chef USA) was always a mismatch for the expensive but very dull space. Just oppressive. It was a weird lobbyist meets experimental african menu - plus sushi!

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Little Ralph Reeds! Oh lala

I haven't met any of them, but it occurs to me that the one right wing dude I have met who's busy working his way into the right wing power broker hierarchy & hooking up with right wing bimbos.. Well, he's an annoying tasteless arrogant ridiculous pompous jerk, much disliked by his colleagues, and I have a hard time believing he's real and not a cartoon character, and then I realize, assholes like him run the world.

dar1a g (daria g), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, uh, sorry for spamming, but Pete and I (and our two other bandmates) are gonna be playing a show this Sunday night at the very-Metro-accessible Warehouse Next Door. We're in the middle, after Drums vs. Jules and before Get Him Eat Him. Should be good times. Come if you can make it/feel like it, it'd be nice to see folks!

Also, I forgot to mention this at the time, but the dude I share an office with and a friend of his scammed a ton of liquor off the RNC when they by chance stumbled into the same bar where they were holding their xmas party and then faked intern status.

ZR (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:12 (eighteen years ago) link

THIS Sunday? For some reason I thought it was NEXT Sunday. I will try to make it anyway tho dude, what time does the whole shebangy start?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Apparently Signatures has been closed for the past couple of weeks or so! We had no idea until today. Where do the little Ralph Reeds eat NOW?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 21:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Next Sunday I will be relaxing in the lush jungles of Kauai. This Sunday I will be drunk and behaving in a generally embarrassing manner whilst flubbing notes. Doors are at 8:30, we'll probably be on by 10ish?

2 things:

1) Anyone want to meet up for the SUNDAY football games in Adams Morgan?
2) Anyone else interested in going to the Black Cat Feb 18 for Electric Six?

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

1)I'm up for Sunday football if this proposal-writing madness ever comes to an end. I hope you have an mind a place with a good beer selection and outstanding chicken wings, 'cause I sure as hell am not interested in the football aspect.
2)HOW CAN YOU PLAN SO FAR AHEAD AAAAAAGH I WANT MY LIFE BACK!

quincie, Thursday, 5 January 2006 22:15 (eighteen years ago) link

1) I have in mind a smallish not-very-crowded-usually place with an acceptable beer selection (not huge but I have no objections to it) and the BEST wings I've ever had, at a price of $0.25 a wing all day.

2) If I don't plan that far ahead, I never do things! I have to force myself if it's something I really wanna do otherwise I get fucked every time.
