I didn't start posting here till April of 2009 (I checked). It's very strange scrolling back through this thread to the time just before and after inauguration, when he was still treated as this Great Human Being--nice, but strange.

was he? Morbs' complaints and my sniping notwithstanding, this is one of the few places where he wasn't venerated.

I think if you look at the comments that accompany the photos through most of 2008 and 2009, the tone is very different--veneration would be overstating it, but that great hopefulness or whatever you want to call it is still there. ("'Obama and the 1st Family' should be a new Cartoon Network show where they are all superheroes"..."A wonderful, actually happening in front of you version of Saturn"..."That photo makes me warm inside"--there are others.) You still get the part of the story that I think some people have either forgotten, or were never much interested in in the first place.

I don't know -- it's a bunch of people posting cool photos. It's what ILE is for.

I guess that's what it comes down to: whether you look at the photo above and just see a cool photo, or whether you see something more. Not saying anyone's right, just that we're seeing something different.

I moved to the US in March 2009 and was reading this thread from the start, and I've noticed the same thing clemenza is talking about. There was a sense of delight and wonderment early on.
