Oh and of yes: of course I will be at the Jammerman wedding! And I will dance! And, assuming there will be booze, get drunk! I'll try not to embarass anybody, though.

Jesse, I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Or should be.

Tonight, I am going to see the Chicago Fire play the Los Angeles Galaxy in the championship game of the US Open Cup. I expect a few dozen people in Chicago will actually care if they win. The tournament is kind of cool in its organization, though. Just about any soccer team in the US can enter and play against pros, and (potentially) take it all home.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I like that the Chicago team's logo is based on that of a fire department. I hear the fans are mostly a bunch of assholes, though. :( I think the NYC firm had trouble with Chicago supporters on various occasions. Not that the NJ/NY supporters are incredibly gracious and well mannered, but they're pretty racially & culturally diverse and don't tend to be white fratboy types.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 17:58 (seventeen years ago) link

assholes
white fratboy types

Yup, pretty much describes my housemate to a tee! (He's the one with season tickets.) Well, not the fratboy part, I guess.

I've heard a bit about the fans... evidently they have a web forum where they plan their nasty chants and heckles and that kind of stuff. The latest thing for the games against L.A. (they played them in regular league play last week) is to bring German flags to taunt the star L.A. player, Donovan, for choking in the World Cup in Germany.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Soccer fans seem to me to tend to be huge assholes toward whoever is not their team, though.

I've been asked to speak on a panel for a discussion of the Big Box ordinance and a living wage. It's this Friday afternoon. On the one hand, I'm totally passionate about the topic, it's awesome for me professionally to be publicly associated with this type of thing, I love public speaking (no seriously, I do), and it is a huge ego boost to be asked to do stuff like this.

On the other hand, I have a big old chunk of my big old 30 page thesis due on Monday and I really don't have time for this shit. And I was thinking on the train today that I am getting dangerously close to harming myself due to overwork/over stress/lack of sleep.

What should I do, Chicago?

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, it's also one of those, "OMG this is so last minute but our first choice speaker* fell through please help us!" kind of appeals, which adds a guilt factor if I say no.

* You'd think that would lessen the ego boost, but somehow it just doesn't...

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Would you have to do additional research for the panel or just show up?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Politely decline due to prior engagement. Maybe they'll have you back?

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Do the panel! It's great experience, and maybe you'll make a difference, and if it goes well you'll remember it all your life.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I would say do it if it's just a couple hours out of the day, it seems like the sort of thing you might be able to put on a resume (but what do I know).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I dunno, I guess I would think about it as something you're paying for that will affect the rest of your life vs. something you'd be giving up your own time for and, while beneificial to you and others, that could have a negative outcome for your schooling. Maybe I'm just selfish that way.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I think I'd just have to show up. I'm not sure if my experience is of the type they are looking for - he talked about sharing my experience with student organizing and I have done none of that w/r/t the living wage ordinance.

I don't think my situation is quite so dire as to come down to a choice between continuing with school or speaking on this panel. Although it probably sounds that way to hear me whine so much.

I'll get some more info to see if I'm really the "student perspective" he's looking for, and if not, I'll try to get my coworker to do it since she's writing her 30 page senior thesis on the ordinance anyway.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:20 (seventeen years ago) link

When someone hands off a job to a co-worker, we all pay.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:23 (seventeen years ago) link

it does sound like a great experience. what jordan said, really. it's really tough to figure out how to fit rewarding stuff in with an already hectic schedule though. ugh.

you need to book yourself a massage or something after you get this massive thesis done. or little relaxy things you can do to reward yourself for stages of the thesis.

xp sounds like a good way to address it.

Juulia (julesbdules), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I would do it too. It sounds awesome!!!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

who's paying for a hand job from their co-worker?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I emailed him back to tell him what I had to offer. It's in God's hands now.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Interesting coincidence, there...

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

riiiiight, "coincidence". *wink*

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Nick, that Peter Carey novel looks really good.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm late, but I'd do it, too. I mean, I jump at opportunities like that.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking on a panel would totally be a dream come true.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Any panel?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:45 (seventeen years ago) link

wood panel

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

clapboard, if you will

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

No, probably not, but being asked to participate on an appropriate panel where I could share my expertise and engage in a discussion with other folks would be tremendously satisfying. Beats the fuck out of being a desk-monkey.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

"Led Zeppelin, Automotive Maintenance, and Society"?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I could handle the Society part of that.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

you think so?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Now I'm trying to think of an appropriate panel to be part of. I don't think I have any expertise in anything that's worth sharing.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not sure I do, either. Except for baby-name trends.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 18:58 (seventeen years ago) link

UH.

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:02 (seventeen years ago) link

WHAT ABOUT THE FILE

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:03 (seventeen years ago) link

We could turn Thirsty Thursdays into a panel discussion. It would be like a cross between our writing here and regular conversation. We would each have a microphone, a glass of water, and a nameplate. Libraries have this stuff, don't they?

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I would attend a panel on baby name trends in a heart beat, and I am not kidding. Especially if John were one of the speakers.

I don't know that I have the requisite expertise for a panel like this, btw. People just know that Workers Rights Is My Bag so I end up being a gap filler for stuff like this sometimes. I did a "Future of Collective Bargaining" talk at Northwestern (Northwestern? The one in Evanston) under the same "our first choice bailed help us" circumstances.

But I'm a substitute for another guy.
I look pretty tall but my heels are high..
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young, but I'm just back-dated...

xpost - I could probably get us a room at school...

Huh. She's not in Shortbus, is she? (That's the new John Cameron Mitchell film with REAL SEX.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:15 (seventeen years ago) link

I bet a friend of hers who is an up & coming designer made that. She felt obligated to wear it.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there something really wrong with her clothing that mine male eyes are just not seeing?

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

She looks like a rooster.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't have to make a real decision for a few months, but I'm not sure if I want to find an apartment by myself or move in with a couple of friends (dude from the band and his sister), who are thinking of renting a house.

On one hand I like living alone (I think?!), but on the other hand it would probably be a good idea to have people to hang with, make sure I don't live like a slob, get out of the house, etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

She looks like she should be in a saloon.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 19:36 (seventeen years ago) link

she looks like bizarro sigourney weaver

Yes. Yes she does.
