dyao, yeah, if you asked me if I wanted an air or a 12" pb, i would take the air! i would just like to see the air be smaller, even it that made it 1/100th inch thicker, which seems to be their marketing's main concern.

yeah the inability to drag and drop vids to ipod and ipad's is the worst thing ever (tho somewhat understandable, I wish they'd at least accept more codecs/filetypes)

the lack of a universal file storage area/library sucks though (and would probably be too computer-like for apple's current design philosophy wrt iphone and ipad)

yeah, i might be imagining it, but i thought i'd heard something about an api being exposed in 4.0 to make this easier for non-apple devs. as you say though, apple's own apps suck in this regard.

there's something about file management coming but i can't remember how it works

you have to buy all your files from itunes store

and then sync them while holding down the home button through safari

you also have to be doing a handstand (the ipad orientation sensor will keep you honest)

btw if you're in school iirc you can become a student developer through apple's developer connection for $100. that entitles you to a one-time 20% discount on any purchase of a mac, which would bring the $2200 15" mbp to around $1860.

lol after doing the math you save around $140 over the education store discount, at least for the top of the line 15". I assume the savings get smaller the further down you move down the apple product line.

iPad works fine for watching random movies. If you want to make it work well, I'd recommend importing the file into iTunes (although not having iTunes do any transcoding) and adding title and descriptions. I threw a couple ripped dvds on there and they work great.

File syncing to the iPad kind of sucks, or at least it would for document management of anything you'll edit.

I've been just streaming my DivX and other random file formats through Air Video (from my laptop). Real nice interface and quality of video.

By "random" I mean "movies that I have been encoding with Handbrake for the past couple years." If you're looking for random crap you've downloaded off the web to work, then yeah, there will be issues.

They've scrapped the ADC student programme and the hardware discount. It's still valid if you've got one, but you can't sign up any more.

I think it’s fair to say that most people involved in interaction design tend to agree that hierarchical file systems have largely failed their users. People don’t want to deal with user-maintained hierarchies, and hierarchical file systems mainly succeed in helping people lose their data inside a huge mess of pointless folder structures. However, when we say «hierarchical file systems don’t work», most of us end that sentence with «so we need to replace them with something better» in our heads. Apple, on the other hand, ended the sentence with «so we’re not going to bother with this stuff, let’s just leave this up to each individual application.»1

As a result, the problem is now arguably becoming worse than it was before. Not only is the problem of file management still unsolved and extremely difficult, but now every application has its own, mutually incompatible and inconsistent solution for it.

Some applications synchronize files on a local network with a desktop application or a small desktop client. Others let users add and remove files using something like FTP or WebDAV. Some use Internet services for synchronizing files. The iPad has its own file sharing system for certain applications, which is a complete joke. Some applications interface with systems like Box.net or Dropbox.

Most applications can’t share files between each other. And of course, the user interface for accessing files is completely different in different applications.

At some point, Apple needs to address this problem. Unfortunately, they did not do so in 4.0.

people talk about something that I thought was a good idea, the old soup idea, put everything in one place and use tags or metadata, but the more I think about that, the more I think that's a terrible idea as well. Like I'm more or less happy with labels in gmail, but then I find it really tedious to add 3 labels to a single email.

For most normal people who simply keep everything in a "documents" folder, an easy solution can probably be found, but for serious users with tons and tons of work, I can't imagine what it would be.

I don't like anything that relies on search...spotlight, quicksilver etc. It's like, you forget where things are, you search for them and if you find two similar folders you still have to remember which is which. I prefer orderly folder nesting. Search is also too slow, especially over a network.

For me, primarily a creator and reader of texts (as opposed to "multimedia" files), a great start would be a file system that put the author's name and article's title "automatically" into the file's name, or into whatever "tag" system is being searched. Spotlight fails me so often even when I know the author and (some substring of the) title.

it can't be automatic though. Somebody has to input the info somewhere! I'm not sure how much room for metadata there is in .txt or .rtf or .doc, but Photoshop for instance has an extensive amount of metadata, and it's not Photoshop specific, it uses what's called XMP. Digital asset management at larger advertising/design/printing type firms use this info and it's plugged into a database or web browsing abilities.

right---but it could be something that, say, PDF or .doc creation somehow "prompted" or even "required" (obv. in some weak sense) you to do...not so much for yourself as for other people who'll be sharing the documents.

I can see this being the type of thing where Apple doesn't release anything until they think they have the problem nailed (see copy paste.) It seems like Jobs is in love with the idea of re-imagining computing, so I don't see a tactical retreat to a boring old filesystem.
