1. Yes, I know bear claws. Also elephant ears.
2. Kelsey, I would buy the tiny pies and 2-3 cookies. Non-vegan cookies (or else they would have to be the best vegan cookies ever).

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I would buy a dozen cookies. I know I would want more than 2-3.

jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:40 (sixteen years ago) link

SO cute! I would buy these pies.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

THEY ARE THE BEST VEGAN COOKIES EVER!

I think the pies might do well as a novelty item if nothing else. Question about the pies: How many to sell at once? A pack of two? Only one? A set of four?

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I believe you about the vegan cookies Kelsey. I guess. But I don't believe that they couldn't be made better with the addition of real live butter.

I bought a cookie at the Landmark theatre--it looked amazing, all soft and big. But then I bit into it and it was vile. Then I read the package closer and saw that it was vegan. Turns out that all the cookies they sell are vegan. WTF. Way to go, do-gooder Landmark assholes.

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Jesse, I'm finding recipes for bear claws made with danish dough and dates and raisins and stuff -- I think the dried fruit thing is part of the same tradition as the ones I'm thinking of, since it can be stored over the long winter when you can't get anything fresh.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

This is, if it wasn't obvious, for a bake sale at work. I've been dying to bake as I never can justify making stuff for just Leaf & I seeing as how we will eat all of it. I might be tempted to make more than one thing just so we can have some leftovers!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

John, you have tried my vegan cookies, right?

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I HAD AN ELEPHANT EAR LAST WEEKEND OMG. I love those things, the East Coast forms of fried dough do not impress.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Why bother making a vegan cookie? I guess for a bake sale it would be good to get the vegan buck. But why create such a thing at home?

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I've had them. I remember them being quite delicious.

jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I would sell everything individually, with the exception of a special dozen cookies price.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Is this a bake sale where people will be likely eating their purchases on site? This is key.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

The tiny pies are great, because I'm not tryin' to eat a whole pie by myself.

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I agree with Sarah. Or, you know, you could sell the cookie batches 6 to a package, cos just based on expectations you can charge more per cookie that way. You know? Because at the same unit price, a dozen starts to look kind of expensive, whereas half doz isn't so guilt-inducing.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I was vegan for almost a year which is why I was experimenting with recipes. They're so good I keep making them. Other than that, I suppose if you consider fake butter to be healthier than real stuff and are offended by eggs, then maybe you can say that they're healthier? They are cholesterol free but they still have fat in them.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Kesley, I believe your cookies are delicious, but I have been burned by vegan cookies in the past.

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Er. Does...anyone consider fake butter to be healthier? I thought there was a big scandal in which margarine was shown to have serious QA problems (made in aluminum vats, etc) and unforseen health effects?

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm also probably not in charge of pricing.

Also, all this anti-vegan cookie sentiment makes me want to mail people care packages!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

In that case, I don't believe vegan cookies could possibly be any good!

;-)

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

ha! i always have these fantasies about sending people little care packages that never come into fruition. i should start a movement to revive the care package in the lives of adults.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

I always want to send care packages to my sister in Paris, but it's SO FREAKIN' EXPENSIVE to mail anything over there. Also, a lot of packages get detained or lost. The most reliable method has been sending her stuff via priority mail, but it's $28 for the smallest size package.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:54 (sixteen years ago) link

damn that is expensive!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, all this anti-vegan cookie sentiment makes me want to mail people care packages!

Yeah, I think your cookies suck, you better PROVE ME WRONG!

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:58 (sixteen years ago) link

I grew up on margarine and still eat it. :(

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:58 (sixteen years ago) link

sending people care packages would give me the incentive to bake the cookies AND not eat all of them...

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link

We use regular butter at home for baking and country crock margarine for spreading.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I made a double recp of chocolate chip cookies on Tuesday and I'm still baking them off one dozen at a time and giving them away to people. Man, cookie dough freezes so well, and then I just slice some off and chuck it in the oven. A little extra dark brown sug, only about 2/3 of the white sug that's called for, half again more vanilla, and an extra pinch of salt. OM NOM NOM

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

hmmm. maybe i'll send some care packages in the near future. i need to make my dad's birthday present first & then I think i'll obsess over baking. oh! and cheese making! i'm getting my cheese making books from the library today or tomorrow!

we use butter & earth balance, for what it's worth.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not intersted in non-dairy spreads. Full stop.

xp CHEESE MAKING???

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! apparently it's very easy!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm seriously turning into some freak homesteader. i made more clothes for myself over the weekend & now i want to make cheese.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Molly Mum is doing the same, she went from sewing to knitting to SPINNING and now she is buying a SPINNING WHEEL and going to Dye Day at local sheep farms!

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

a friend of mine is getting into that as well!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel like my parents were pretty thrifty at my age: like my mom made clothes for us, and my dad made his own pasta, and they ate fried liver because it was cheap. And I realized not too long ago that I'm probably never going to have this lifestyle -- because I live in a city? because I didn't go to grad school like they did? because (I fear) I feel too entitled? -- and sometimes I feel vaguely guilty about it.

jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish to learn to use my sewing machine. Jenny will make that wish come true. After she gets her bar results.

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

WHERE THE FUCK ARE JENNY'S BAR RESULTS GODDAMMIT

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

(sorry)

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

no, it's cool, she looks vegan

river wolf, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

laurel,
When you freeze dough, do you first roll it up like a log? What do you wrap it with.. or do you put it in a big ziplock? I like this idea.

The problem with my love for baking is that I have a big sweet tooth and can't stop eating my lovely baked goods.

John, I've thought about that too, about how my mom often made clothes for herself and us too, diy-ed ornaments for their Christmas tree, gathered veggies from the garden she had with my dad... I think part of the reason I've never had to be THAT frugal is my damn credit cards.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Sarah, yeah, I wrap it in Saran wrap as a log and if I have foil, I put that around the outside if it's going to be in the freezer more than a week or so.

I don't have any credit cards, never did, but I like to share with my parents the things that defined my childhood, like canning and baking and construction and useful tasks. Also making a giant pot of lentils is the cheapest four breakfasts ever...and DELICIOUS.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, I never want to hear THIS from my future kids: "How come grandma's house isn't messy and she always has cookies? Don't you know how to make cookies, Momma?"

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm getting rather romanced by the idea of sustainable living, thus my inkling toward eating a local diet (which may require me to revisit my vegetarianism down the road, although I'm not ready/willing to do that yet), and my dreams of having a larger garden & maybe chickens. I was toying with the idea of having goats, but I also want the freedom to go away for a weekend & you can't really do that when you're milking.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Thank god my mom's house is messy and she doesn't really bake. :>

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I just ordered an insane amount of baker's twine in anticipation of cute packaging.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

pls refer to me, english-learning professional. knowledge is power, education will open the door to your future etc.

according to my landlady (an eastern european immigrant herself), most of the non-english speakers don't want to learn english.

the best brownies i ever had came from dan the fan. i was at the bottle and after i ate my second one he came up to me and said "oh yeah, be careful. they're a double strength batch." 10 minutes later i was sitting on the stairs in front of the sound board propped up by the brick wall.

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

whatcha doing sunday?

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan the Fan was rocking out to our set last night. He even did the countdown on "Major Tom" with his arm raised and four, three, two, one fingers showing.
