it's a shame they came up short

It even made Phil cry! Though those may have been tears of relief, since Mirna won't be around to grab and molest him anymore.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:18 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm gonna miss that crazy wtf?-accent of hers around the world. "vee need to go veddy fast, salut!"

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I think she may have even said Bellissimo again last night.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

They were really my favorite reality show contestants evah.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I usually try and suspend disbelief when i watch these shows. i don't really want to think too hard about the logistics and editing cuz where's the fun in that? I mean, how DO they get cameramen on all these last-minute flights with 2 seats left? Do they buy up all the seats except for two? But anyway, they REALLY made it look like that bus that ran out of gas was left in the dust and yet they end up ahead of Mirna's bus. Veeeeerrrrryyy tricky.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Mirna and Charla's bus had a lot more people on it though, so it may have had to make a lot more stops than the one that ran out of gas.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:15 (nineteen years ago) link

ah, that makes sense. i didn't even think of that! thanks for putting my mind at ease, Leon.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Good commentary on the episodes (from a cheap traveller perspective) on http://hasbrouck.org/blog/

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Reposting a hilarity from the TWP message forum:

-----
Unintentionally funny caption for one of the photos in the episode slideshow at the official TAR5 site at CBS.com:

Mirna & Charla get a clue

You can read it with lots of different combinations of punctuation and emphasis, and it's all so true. My fave? Imperative sentence, with a comma after "Charla."

Oh, man! I'm so angry at that cockfarmer Colin who didn't want to pay for the taxi. And now he's in first place. I would like to punch him.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I wanted a camel to fall over and crush him.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:46 (nineteen years ago) link

And then to have his girlfriend apologize! He should have gone to jail. That taxi driver should have been compensated extra for the time he had to spend getting the police and waiting. It was this gross arrogance -- "This will take 5 minutes" -- like because he's a white American they'll all just let him dictate prices. Uggh.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I took great pleasure in seeing the hassle he went through and wished he was actually incarcerated. Christie needs to dump him fast.

TAR should reword its "the last time will/may be eliminated" cos it absolutely drained whatever drama there was to be had.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:03 (nineteen years ago) link

But they're going to win, aren't they?

Did anyone else enjoy Chip's idea of karma? In that he wouldn't have been put into a situation whose extrication required good karma if he hadn't been giving $20 tips?

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 05:15 (nineteen years ago) link

chip's logic was a little hard to figure. "if i give a cabdriver in one country extra money, then a cabdriver in another country will have to let me ride for free!" I think I have that right. Cab karma is weird. (chip's karma ran over your dogma mister dubai cabdriver and you are shit out of luck!)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 09:04 (nineteen years ago) link

And Colin....what do you say about someone like Colin? He's everything you could possibly hate about a person all in one person! He's so pissed-off and angry that his face has actually frozen into some gruesome mask of unpleasantness. But, you know, he DOES make a great villain to root against.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 09:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm not sure if I heard right .. but when everyone else got to the cabs in Dubai, they said they all paid $9.. (except Brandon, who paid $20 ..) But when Colin got out of his cab, he said "34? Oh, 44?" Was that his cab fare, or something else? (wishing it was his cab fare because he's such an asshole...)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Didn't you just cringe when Colin said, "Send the policeman in, send in your president. I don't care. I won't pay." He has no respect! And his girlfriend is such a pushover. She just keeps apologizing. Ay ay ay.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:01 (nineteen years ago) link

AND he said "Hakuna matata!" HAKUNA MATATA, PEOPLE! Colin is the living embodiment of cock.

I am rooting for Chip & Kim, but I don't doubt that they will eventually lose.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Nothing more to add, except that if the TV cameras hadn't been there, Colin would be vulture meat.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I have a feeling he would have the mother of all beat-downs if the cameras weren't around. It's a pity he escaped unscathed.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope his girlfriend gets some serious self-esteem counseling. Colin's all "I want her to support me whether I'm right or wrong. This isn't the kind of relationship I want."
She's this close to showing her backbone, and then she caves. I felt so bad for her. Girl needs to step out on her own.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I am pretty curious about how the camera and behind the scenes folk keep up. They must have a hellicopter or something for the taxi chase scenes?? And maybe each team has one camera person assigned to them?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

When they were running to the Aeroclub to do the skydiving, I think the trailing team's camera dude caught the leading team's sound guy giving up the chase. I'm not sure, but there was a white dude running behind them and then he wasn't.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:52 (nineteen years ago) link

When they were in South America, at some point, they were getting into taxis, and I think I saw this white guy in a business suit with a briefcase standing right near Chip & Kim. Or I was hallucinating.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

You think they're CIA?

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

That's what my neighbor's dog told me.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:07 (nineteen years ago) link

They should do a behind the scenes at the end, showing the crew making fun of the contestants.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

You know the crew has a hate-on for Colin, why else would they have shown that utterly loathsome shot of him in the elevator demanding a kiss from his g/f?

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:21 (nineteen years ago) link

I think it would be funny if the twins somehow bumble their way to victory - kind of like how the autistic guy emerged at the end of "The Cube."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

My prediction for who will be eliminated in what order:
Next: Bowling Moms
Then: Twins
Then: Chip & Kim
Then: Bible models
Winners: Living embodiment of cock, and the no-self-confidence sea slug that is his girlfriend.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Give me a kiss, Nick. Now, dammit!

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:57 (nineteen years ago) link

OH MY GOD I HATE HIM SO MUCH.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:01 (nineteen years ago) link

"Why are you making this so difficult?" Colin asked his girlfriend as he was trying to stiff a cabbie and insult the local police.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

I seriously couldn't watch some of that shit, it was so nerve-wracking. I had to get up and walk into the other room for a minute.

n.a. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd do him.

Ha ha. j/k

Colin & Christie met in a class at the University of Texas in Austin and have been
dating for over a year. Both now live in Corpus Christi, Texas. When Colin saw Christie
give a presentation in their communications class, he knew that she was the one for him.
It took eight months of being friends before he finally got her to go out on a date with
him.
Colin claims that he will ask Christie to marry him if they can get through the
Race together.

Christie is the 1996 Miss Teen USA winner, the first and only one from Texas. However,
she considers her biggest accomplishment in life to be working to pay her entire way
through college and graduating with honors. She describes herself and her teammate as
"very competitive, extremely aggressive with strong personalities." Although Christie
says that she is always late, she is also a perfectionist who hates losing.

Colin is the owner of a cell phone store. Among the accomplishments he is most proud
of is getting Christie to fall in love with him, which he claims is better than being the
top first-year dealer for a book publishing company in the United States.
He also agrees
that he and Christie are both very aggressive and “very outspoken and in-your-face.”
However, he is a very open person who will talk to anyone, while Christie is extremely
private.

Colin & Christie are excited about competing in THE AMAZING RACE 5 because they
will be able to travel the world and participate in this kind of competition. Christie adds,
"Another reason for doing this Race is that it is a test to see if we are marriage potential.
I know we can win, and if we do, we're getting married right after the show."

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

CELL PHONE STORE OWNER & PHARMACEUTICAL SALES REP
I guess they deserve each other.

How romantic!!! ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

"A GPS navigation system - I know how to use this, no problem!"

i hope he gets ostricitis of the testicles.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope an emu bites him in the nuts.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

$100 isn't even a bad deal for a two-hour cab ride, "donut" on the front wheel or no.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

If he hadn't been goading him to go "faster, faster" the donut mighta held. Also, remember that the first cabbie Chip & Kim talked to wanted $150.

Huck, Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:45 (nineteen years ago) link

"Our tire had a flat...give us your spare." Yeah, Colin amped up the cockfarmitude pretty high during that scene, and then knocked it out of the park during that pointless standoff with the cabbie. 'Til this episode, they were my favorite team along with Chip and Kim.

Btw, no one commented on the funniest scene of all-time a few weeks back, when Charla was desperately trying to keep the goats on the boat. Her tapdancing back and forth along the bow with her arms outstretched = comedy gold.

they way colin threw the money at those people, oy vey. You. Must. Die. Now.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost
Christian girlfriend and Colin should get together and then they really wouldn't let anybody overcharge them for anything.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't tell the difference between Christian Girlfriend and Colin's Girlfriend. I guess white people just all look the same to me.
