hmmm. maybe i'll send some care packages in the near future. i need to make my dad's birthday present first & then I think i'll obsess over baking. oh! and cheese making! i'm getting my cheese making books from the library today or tomorrow!

we use butter & earth balance, for what it's worth.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not intersted in non-dairy spreads. Full stop.

xp CHEESE MAKING???

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! apparently it's very easy!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm seriously turning into some freak homesteader. i made more clothes for myself over the weekend & now i want to make cheese.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Molly Mum is doing the same, she went from sewing to knitting to SPINNING and now she is buying a SPINNING WHEEL and going to Dye Day at local sheep farms!

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

a friend of mine is getting into that as well!

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel like my parents were pretty thrifty at my age: like my mom made clothes for us, and my dad made his own pasta, and they ate fried liver because it was cheap. And I realized not too long ago that I'm probably never going to have this lifestyle -- because I live in a city? because I didn't go to grad school like they did? because (I fear) I feel too entitled? -- and sometimes I feel vaguely guilty about it.

jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I wish to learn to use my sewing machine. Jenny will make that wish come true. After she gets her bar results.

Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

WHERE THE FUCK ARE JENNY'S BAR RESULTS GODDAMMIT

no, it's cool, she looks vegan

river wolf, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

laurel,
When you freeze dough, do you first roll it up like a log? What do you wrap it with.. or do you put it in a big ziplock? I like this idea.

The problem with my love for baking is that I have a big sweet tooth and can't stop eating my lovely baked goods.

John, I've thought about that too, about how my mom often made clothes for herself and us too, diy-ed ornaments for their Christmas tree, gathered veggies from the garden she had with my dad... I think part of the reason I've never had to be THAT frugal is my damn credit cards.

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Sarah, yeah, I wrap it in Saran wrap as a log and if I have foil, I put that around the outside if it's going to be in the freezer more than a week or so.

I don't have any credit cards, never did, but I like to share with my parents the things that defined my childhood, like canning and baking and construction and useful tasks. Also making a giant pot of lentils is the cheapest four breakfasts ever...and DELICIOUS.

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, I never want to hear THIS from my future kids: "How come grandma's house isn't messy and she always has cookies? Don't you know how to make cookies, Momma?"

Laurel, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm getting rather romanced by the idea of sustainable living, thus my inkling toward eating a local diet (which may require me to revisit my vegetarianism down the road, although I'm not ready/willing to do that yet), and my dreams of having a larger garden & maybe chickens. I was toying with the idea of having goats, but I also want the freedom to go away for a weekend & you can't really do that when you're milking.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Thank god my mom's house is messy and she doesn't really bake. :>

Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I just ordered an insane amount of baker's twine in anticipation of cute packaging.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

pls refer to me, english-learning professional. knowledge is power, education will open the door to your future etc.

according to my landlady (an eastern european immigrant herself), most of the non-english speakers don't want to learn english.

the best brownies i ever had came from dan the fan. i was at the bottle and after i ate my second one he came up to me and said "oh yeah, be careful. they're a double strength batch." 10 minutes later i was sitting on the stairs in front of the sound board propped up by the brick wall.

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

whatcha doing sunday?

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Dan the Fan was rocking out to our set last night. He even did the countdown on "Major Tom" with his arm raised and four, three, two, one fingers showing.

I really should just move to Vermont/NH and live in a cabin somewheres.

river wolf, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

have you ever seen dan's calves? they're the size of my thighs. shit, i just remembered the last time i talked to him he was telling me about his birthday show and now i can't remember anything about it. except that i wanted to see it.

maybe he'll be at the mutiny tonight. oh yeah, mutiny tonight! free show benefitting chicago independent radio. since there's no cover money will be raised by a percentage of the bar receipts so get your drinking shoes on. featuring VEE DEE (chicago psych/prog/punk), The Mans (lafayette, in primal retards with their gories-esque proto-rock), Truthdealter (milwaukee hardcore), and Bear Proof Suit (milwaukee punk in the vein of wipers/black flag/more brutal sounding husker du).

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I can see you living in NH or Montana for some reason.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 17:58 (sixteen years ago) link

i can see rw in vermont, can't see him in new hampster. the politics are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

depends on where you are.

sweet tater, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, he did go to school there.

jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

new hampshire has long been the sole red state in new england going back to at least the 60s. vermont still votes to secede from the union every year and has the only senator who isn't a democrat or republican.

xpost- i can't see him being the creepy older dude still hanging around hanover a decade after graduating either.

now would be the perfect time to be here (for leaf peeping purposes):

im 98% positive my sister's house is the one at the bottom of the picture. there's a 2% chance it's the one at 5 o'clock.

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously?

HEY, what is happenin' tonight, folks?

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:29 (sixteen years ago) link

i just did a google map search of her address, it's the white one at 3 o'clock. it used to be an inn until about 30 years ago. her and her husband got it for a song when the previous owner (an investment banker in nyc) had to liquidate all his assets after being convicted of embezzlement.

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Nice!

KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

sarah, in addition to the show at the mutiny (which probably wouldn't be your thing anyway) there's this:

Friday Oct 5th
at Hideout

Tribute to The Fall!

* Plastic Crimewave Sound
* Tight Phantomz
* Fast Product
* Sybris
* The Thin Man
* Grimble Grumble

chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i went to grade school/middle school with a kid who spent a year at the top of mount washington while he was in intern for the noaa. local paper did a 3 part story about him and the conditions on the mountain in january. the pictures were otherworldly.

they have to try to clear the ice off this stuff each day because there are days where they just can't go outside and the ice will be feet thick.

Mount Washington holds the world record for directly measured surface wind speed, at 231 mph (372 km/h), recorded on the afternoon of April 12, 1934.

...

Mount Washington's record low of -47 °F (-44 °C) was recorded on January 29, 1934. On January 16, 2004, the summit weather observation registered a temperature of -43.6 °F and sustained winds of 87.5 mph, resulting in a wind chill value of -103 °F (-75 °C) at the mountain. [3] During a 71 hour stretch from around 3 p.m. on January 13 to around 2 p.m. on January 16, 2004, the wind chill on the summit never went above -50°F. [3] Snowstorms at the summit are routine in every month of the year, with snowfall averaging 645 cm (21 ft) per year.

badass.
