kate beckinsale was great in this, and she's never been more than execrable in anything else i've seen her in

went ham in a bad way (stevie), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 07:22 (fourteen years ago) link

I think so, although there's always a few cheap-ish copies on amazon/ebay. I got a German import(?) for a fiver a couple of years ago. And there's the Criterion issue from the States of course.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 07:49 (fourteen years ago) link

(looking at my copy now I notice it's Dutch not German - de laatste dagen van de disco - het leven begint voorbij het fluwelen koord...

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 07:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I've never seen the film, but that monologue was GREAT.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 08:03 (fourteen years ago) link

oh - maybe it was the criterion version i thought was OOP. loved this movie when i saw it at the cinema...

went ham in a bad way (stevie), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 08:47 (fourteen years ago) link

The monologue is a goof, but Matt Keeslar looks so damn good.

I pride myself in having picked out 'Nonie's HOTNESS aaages before my mates, all of whom were put off by her goth get-up in Beetle Juice. Not me though, oh no. YUM GOTHS.

Erika in Under Seige damnnnn...

Saw Wayne's World again recently. And Tia almost looks like she's in a David Lynch film from this shot:

Anna Nicole was so super 90s hot its a shame she didn't make it thru the Y2K apocalypse

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fbnpcWbGQo4/SmlOIxBMOmI/AAAAAAAAAS0/JDJhoFRY7bM/s400/anna_nicole_smith3.jpg

Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

My introduction to Anna Nicole Smith was when I was 10 or 12 or so, that one Naked Gun movie was on TV, and I think I made a comment to my mom about how big her breasts were, and she told me that her name was Anna Nicole Smith and that one of her boobs had ruptured at one point and she'd been rushed to the emergency room.

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm Ann Reinking! (Stevie D), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Every already-broken image in this thread is a small tragedy.

This lady stood next to me at a Blur gig and tried to talk to me during "To the end" but i was too busy listening to the gig and kinda blanked her, it was only after she walked away i realised it was her from Sleeper who'd just supported Blur. :(

Here we see Mr Gaiman in the '90s. As mentioned elsewhere, I really do not care about his writing and am not very goth, but I would fuckin' wreck that.

The "bad girl" trend in superhero comics may have waned, but the boobs are still there. It's kinda sad, there are some superhero books I'd really love recommend to my female friends, but I'm not sure if they could get past the fact that they look like wank fodder for teen boys. What's even sadder is that things have only gotten worse throughout the decades; reading superhero comics from the 70s and 80s, the female bodies in them may still look a bit unreal, but at least they aren't framed like porn shots.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

For example, this is what Rachel/Phoenix used to look like in the 80s:

And this is what she looks like today:

all these images do look 90's, but i really can't point to something specific about them that dates them. i mean, some of them could pass as 80's or the 00's. what makes them look 90's?

I think two things you can definitely point to (there are loads more!) is that noses are bigger, and hair less blonde, than in either 00s or 80s hot? With the noses the it's probably just surgery but the hair I think is the story of alt going mainstream?

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 24 May 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Re: recursive Esquire cover just above. Mark Leyner! There's a "turn of phrase" gifted/plot challenged author who's star/publishing has fallen to disappointing lows after Tooth Imprints on a Corn Dog (1996). I dunno if he was considered hot in general culture, but My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist rocked my Donald Barthelme riven world in 1991...

nori dusted (Sanpaku), Monday, 24 May 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

The 90s look may also be technologically driven, just in terms of the images - - like, all the magazine covers are still shot on film (I think) and there's somewhat less digital fiddling with color balance and stuff. Obviously that was all in play but (I think) not anywhere to the degree as in the 00s. Reminds me indirectly of this: http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.com/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html

Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 May 2010 16:12 (fourteen years ago) link

huh. that's actually sort of interesting - the orange and teal thing.

Yes it was the golden era of raven haired, pale beauties in the mainstream.

Matt Armstrong, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 04:05 (fourteen years ago) link

That looks like a video game character. I guess digital airbrushing has improved a lot since the 90s.

The last time I was bored at work on a Saturday because I didn't bring my laptop this thread saved me. It' s a shame I finally ran out of 90s crushes. Anyone got any not already posted that they would like to share with the class?
