Robert Frost has also died :-(

Again? Didn't he die like a year ago or something? Something there is that doesn't like the grave.

Police correspondent Alex Drake quipped "it's all a dream, I'm in 1963world" at a special press conference.

"Don't try it" added 34-year-old British tourist and witness to the shooting John Ravenscroft.

It will take Billy Joel to put this into some sort of meaningful context for me.

This is totally fucked up. They have the suspect of the biggest crime of the century and he's not protected. Makes me think that someone wanted him shut up because he could name the people who were bankrolling him. I don't buy it that he was a lone nutjob, it must be the Soviets behind it.

Billy Dods, Saturday, 16 February 2008 07:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Some of the political blogs are now claiming there was a second gunman, up on some grassy knoll somewhere. Mentalists as far as I'm concerned, that'll never stick.

(meta note: This thread is dangerously close to starting an actual discussion about the Kennedy assassination, CIO.)

kenan, Saturday, 16 February 2008 12:29 (sixteen years ago) link

It is an actual discussion about the Kennedy assassination! Have you had blinders on in the past few days, you fucking beatnik?

As far as those conspiracy theories, I heard that someone told all the Jews to stay out of Dealy Plaza on Friday.

OK, guys, let's put down the Carling Black Label and face facts, this guy was only human and just as corrupt as the rest of our presidents...except for FDR, Wilson, Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, and Teddy - now they were some infallible guys with no skeletons in their closets.

Kennedy was a hothead with next to no policy experience who nearly got us into the next Big One just a few months ago - or have you knuckleheads already forgotten in the rush to make him the next Marilyn Monroe? Now there was a death worth bemoaning - someone who really stood for America in a way you could get behind. If we ever even hear the name Kennedy in politics again I'd be very surprised.

The only consolation for all this hand-wringing is that Johnson has got his head screwed on straight. I'm counting on him to follow up all the empty promises of Kennedy's presidency with real change; we should be okay so long as he doesn't get us entangled in any military quagmires. (The rubes are talking about Indochina but anyone with any understanding of geopolitics should understand that the next big fight is going to be over the Finnish border.) 'Nuff said!

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link

This is bumming me out, but I'm not going to completely despair. I think there's a lot of promise in his little brother Bobby.

Surely it's time for America to look beyond one political family and to get a colored president. It's kind of a crazy idea and I know some of you are going to say it's too soon. But this guy's on a roll after that big march and I hear he's up for the Nobel prize next. Now's the time to seize the initiative...

multi xpost Tragic that Monroe and Kennedy both died so young, they would have made a beautiful couple.

Still, look on the bright side, Jackie Kennedy's single. Lady Bird Johnson's definitely not my first lady ;-)

Billy Dods, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

(meta again -- ok, this thread is actually pretty depressing. I mean... can you IMAGINE...?)

kenan, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't vote for MLK if he ran in the primaries against Bobby or Lyndon. BFK and LBJ has already done much for the black community. They're experienced. I know that MLK has been skeptical of the rumblings in Indochina, but really, he's just all talk about fairy tales, a dreamweaver.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 16 February 2008 19:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think you're right, I mean what more could blacks want? They need to trust that LBJ does the right thing. To be honest I cannot see a time when America will be ready for a black president. Maybe a woman?! Yeah, right, I know.

well, at least we have the younger kennedy brothers, especially teddy. i feel he will inspire young people, mostly young women, to go places they would have never gone to otherwise.

gershy, Saturday, 16 February 2008 19:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder about Teddy this weekend. I hope he doesn't drown in his sorrows.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 16 February 2008 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't believe Teddy was elected to the senate. All he ever does is drink and chaffeur his brothers' friends around, the useless sod.

xp

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 16 February 2008 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I think he got elected because of his looks, to be honest.

They say Nixon lost the election because he looked like he's hungover in that one televised debate, and didn't come off as appealing as JFK. In reality he'd just been ill, and refused to wear makeup. So Kennedy won just because he looked better, wore makeup like some queer, and was generally better at bullshitting gullible voters. At least Nixon's got some integrity.

Tuomas, Saturday, 16 February 2008 23:10 (sixteen years ago) link

All that was missing was Kennedy having a cute puppy or something with him.

Jackie looks quite pretty in mourning... I bet you one day youngsters will find that sort of attire actually hot. And they'll listen to "morbid rock & roll" or something.

kingfish, Monday, 17 March 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 17 March 2008 03:27 (sixteen years ago) link

I think enough time has passed now to view these events with equanimity. How's it shaping up for you guys over there? Personally, I reckon there were two, maybe three shooters, and that the R-s were involved. (Can't take too many risks!)
