as a role model, Scrappy Doo tells kids it's a good idea to attempt to punch things 40 times their size

Quite a lot. What did YOU watch?

Via Twitter, two friends separately describe Scrappy Doo as Poochie. The prosecution rests.

I was more of a Ninja Turtles kids myself.

Particularly in the Scooby Doo tv movies from the late 80s, Scrappy is great at identifying evidence and then using rational thought to interpret that evidence. He does this out loud for the audience, in real time, so kids can sort of see the process that someone would go through to solve a mystery to an extent that isn't nearly as evident in the early TV shows.

Also, HIDERE that clip is awesome.

The freeze frame on that last one is...wrong.

Anything With Bagpipes (HI DERE), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I disagree. I think that kids will better learn to solve problems by examining the evidence in real time, rather than going back and being all "oh, look what they did there."

huh! tikuuta. (kingkongvsgodzilla), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't think it was possible for Scrappy Doo to be more annoying, and then I encountered Scrappy Doo in Greek

Anything With Bagpipes (HI DERE), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Hahaha amazing

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 April 2010 16:53 (fourteen years ago) link

ESOL students probably wouldn't understand Scrappy.

huh! tikuuta. (kingkongvsgodzilla), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Going back and being all "look what they did there" means they work out the show's formula and then start looking for clues themselves in following episode rather than being spoon-fed "THIS IS A CLUE!" by Scrappy, leading to improved mystery solving skills in later life.

Most kids need a sign flashing above the clue. That's why this country is slipping so far behind in producing professional scientists, engineers, and doctors!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 April 2010 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Most kids need a sign flashing above the clue.

they don't, actually, imo. most kids are a lot smarter than adults give them credit for. scrappy doo is adult writers condescending very badly to kids, which is why most kids (now grown ups on this thread) instinctively went "fuck this, give me back my somewhat lame but mainly cool mystery cartoon"

I'll give you this. I was being a little inflammatory*. I think kids need a little bit of walking through processes and a lot of room to explore. Scrappy's really good at the latter.

*I am largely just being a little inflammatory here, on this parody thread, which is not even about Scrappy Doo. It's about Goofy. Remember Goofy?

scooby-doo is so fucking bad, like even little kids can tell it sucks and is boring, a pup named scooby-doo is the only incarnation that is not just hateful towards its audience in its shittiness and ugliness and so imo focusing on scrappy as a problem is kind of a red herring (!)

A B C, Friday, 30 April 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago) link

but scrappy-doo does suck. scooby dum is just kind of unsettling

Ned, I like Scrappy. And like Scrappy I will stand up to the abandoned-rural-airport-owner-dressed-up-in-a-bedsheet that is you, Dan, and aerosmith, no matter how much my slinky, druggy compatriots try to pull me away.

I think my equivalent of Scrappy is that fucking singing and dancing alien they introduced near the end of the movie Explorers. Loved the first 2/3 of that movie so much as a kid. Hated that alien. Hated it so much.

This group is for those who hate Scrappy Doo and wish death upon him. If only Scooby had not saved him so many times. That little dog had a deathwish.
