scooby-doo is so fucking bad, like even little kids can tell it sucks and is boring
This little kid agreed w/you but still watched it because it was the only cartoon in a certain timeslot. But I hated every minute. Would rather watch the worst episode of Thundarr than the finest episode of Scooby Doo, a cartoon dedicated to the premise that THERE IS NO ACTUAL MAGIC IN THE WORLD, ONLY AVARICE

i used to watch just like half-day blocks of scooby doo and other terrible cheaply-animated old hanna-barbera kids-in-a-vehicle shows on cartoon network. i knew they were bad but something kept me there and eventually i'd notice that it was dark outside and my lungs felt achy

Basically, if I was down in the old Indian Caves and came upon what looked to be a ghost bear, I wouldn't run away and hide chattering in some barrel. I'd look that ghost bear square in the eye and say "PUPPY POWER!" and then I would cold sock him in the lip.

xpost Dan that would not be allowed to happen b/c that would mean there could actually be such a thing as a ghost bear, and this show does not allow us such fancies. It's actually an evil capitalist with a rug thrown over him and a sound effects record on a turntable hidden behind those rocks over there.

Just want to jump in here to dispel the notion that Scooby Doo cartoons completely deny the existence of the supernatural. There are plenty of episodes out there that involve real spooks.
For example, check out this clip from Scooby Doo and Zombie Islandhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsOYaXibrsI
This shit is truly creepy - note the unusually realistic animation style. I feel kind of bad letting my son and two small nieces even watch this episode.

Personally, I think the episodes and cartoon movies that have come out in the past decade are far better than old school Scooby Doo. The animation is improved, they are a bit more self-aware of the ridiculousness of the premise, the episodes feature some peppy musical interludes, etc.

darraghmac, just imagine that I came out with a new "translation" of the Tain bo Cuailnge where Cuchullain had a little kid helper always quick with a current-to-the-times wisecrack, and the name of the character was like "Moomoollin'"
now animate that
voila, Scrappy Doo

I want to say that it is totally true that Scooby-Doo has gotten much better through its various incarnations but part of me wonders if A Pup Named Scooby-Doo seeming like SUCH a breath of fresh air after an original series S-D marathon isn't mostly up to it fitting the standards of WB afterschool cartoons ca. 1993, modern-style animation and meta jokes?? can i really say that meeting Smash Mouth sucks less than meeting the Speed Buggy gang?? questions!!!

My own Facebook strawpoll didn't yield many results, but they were mostly negative. Interestingly though, my sister said:
It's been so long that I don't feel qualified to speak about Scrappy, but I seem to recall that he was the one who was looking for clues... which makes him an evidence-based mystery solver, which I can get behind.
I doubt that we've ever watched or talked about Scrappy-Doo together.
