It was a mega-cheesy tour, but one has to get into the spirit of these things. Also it had some of the most breath-taking scenery I've ever seen.

Is there some sort of booth out in the middle of a giant vast emptyness that rents swords and helmets and such for tourist photos?

They use a woolshed to store the armaments and various LOTR merchandise - the One Ring could be yours for only $99.99!

Haha ok I didn't do any sort of themed tour, we just picked up a map somewhere while we were driving around and found a few of the spots on our own--that sounds really cool, though! I think the beauty in NZ is too astonishing (almost numbing after a while) not to get into the whole LOTR aspect. The voltage from all that just spills over and you're helpless. Even if you don't take it with you, while you're there it seems like the coolest thing ever.

oh man wanna go to NZ so bad, it seems like it'd be catnip for me

we are here in nz right now and my american husband has been freaking out over the scenery - he's already planning several massive hikes next visit. we went to the department of conservation and he got books and brochures and maps and talked to the people there. so now it's all i'm gonna here about for the next two years!
