I helped staff our booth for the exhibit floor at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting last weekend. While setting up, I visited some of the other booths and, well . . .

Congratulations on your degree! It has just occurred to me that you look remarkably like my favorite lit professor from college.

kkvgz, Sunday, 9 May 2010 10:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Abbott, that is a an awesome pic! Congrats!

I've always been kinda envious of you Americans, in here we don't get any fancy hats when we graduate from the uni. Except if you make it as far as a doctor's degree, then you get to wear a fancy "doctor's top hat", like this:

http://www.valt.helsinki.fi/promootio/hattu.jpg

But no hats for mere bachelors/masters. :(

Tuomas, Sunday, 9 May 2010 10:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Made y'all a cake hat.

Same here - that's why I almost posted "congratulations Professor Abbott!" :-)

haha – if only. Thanks y'all.

:D:D :D

Did you all throw your hats in the air y/n

Congrats to Abbott - well done!
I could dig out my graduation pic but it'd have to go in the "w did yll in the olden times" thread as i am so old.

Actually that photo looks like it had a higher production budget than the last of the Highlander movies.

Abbott, that is one of the straight up nicest photos I've ever seen.

lol I don't know why I love the whole "here I am at LOTR location X" aspect of traveling NZ, like I'm not really into those movies, but yet it is so wondrous.

ConGRADulations Abbort! I spent the weekend drunking and wearing my gf's grad hat around her apt. BTW euros, we get to wear fancy hats when we graduate high school, too. So ha.

It was a mega-cheesy tour, but one has to get into the spirit of these things. Also it had some of the most breath-taking scenery I've ever seen.

Is there some sort of booth out in the middle of a giant vast emptyness that rents swords and helmets and such for tourist photos?

NARTH Gaydar (joygoat), Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:03 (fourteen years ago) link

They use a woolshed to store the armaments and various LOTR merchandise - the One Ring could be yours for only $99.99!

my not-so-precious!

he speak the frenche as the Frenches himselves (snoball), Sunday, 9 May 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha ok I didn't do any sort of themed tour, we just picked up a map somewhere while we were driving around and found a few of the spots on our own--that sounds really cool, though! I think the beauty in NZ is too astonishing (almost numbing after a while) not to get into the whole LOTR aspect. The voltage from all that just spills over and you're helpless. Even if you don't take it with you, while you're there it seems like the coolest thing ever.

Battle Groin (╓abies), Sunday, 9 May 2010 19:05 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man wanna go to NZ so bad, it seems like it'd be catnip for me

we are here in nz right now and my american husband has been freaking out over the scenery - he's already planning several massive hikes next visit. we went to the department of conservation and he got books and brochures and maps and talked to the people there. so now it's all i'm gonna here about for the next two years!
