what's the deal with this newsweek article

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

which

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 May 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link

the actual article: http://www.newsweek.com/id/236999

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago) link

the main prob with that article he doesn't even attempt to name an example of a gay actor who played straight well -- i'm perfectly willing to believe that sean hayes & glee dude suck at their roles -- also the wording - "is he compensating for being gay?" - was prob unfortunate

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:02 (fourteen years ago) link

lol yeah

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:03 (fourteen years ago) link

The headline blurb that gay actors playing straight "never" works is insane, but I am unsurprised that the guy wasn't convinced by Sean Hayes playing a Jack Lemmon/Jerry Orbach role. This is mostly a "media personality" issue, not an acting issue. (I know of that Jonathan Groff cutie but have never seen him in anything, and had no idea he was "openly gay" cuz I don't read many interviews/PR.)

But I will continue to not read Newsweek.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:09 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah jonathan groff could get it

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:12 (fourteen years ago) link

The article is shockingly stupid. That's pretty much all there is to say.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Nathan Lane can still play straight parts bcz a very small % of the sudience says "He could get it."

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

that article is pretty offensively bad

anyway, hi gayz! i graduated today. my grad ceremony concluded with a full-band cover of "let the beat build"

joe scarborough and peoples (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

and was opened with a dance piece scored to a steve reich composition, in which nearly all the male dancers were fiiiiine

joe scarborough and peoples (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "gay" here is more media personality, as someone mentioned above. Rock Hudson was a hardcore homo and he played the man every man wanted to be but couldn't because their parents sent them away to a special sports camp that really did more harm than good, honestly.

Spectrum, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Male dancers? Where did you graduate from again?

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

god i love rock hudson. my aunt interviewed him

congratulations donna!!

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Nah, open relationships are trailblazers.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:33 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, didn't realize Newsweek article was written by the same self-loathing headcase who argued last year that femme gays shouldn't be on TV, just the butch ones.

rim this, fuck that (Eric H.), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 13:49 (fourteen years ago) link

There are butch gays on TV???

I didn't mean open relationships, I meant IMing with ppl who otherwise would be gone from one's life.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 13:53 (fourteen years ago) link

De Rossi and Harris do that on TV, but they also inhabit broad caricatures, not realistic characters likes the ones in Up in the Air

Hi. My name is Hywel Bennett. I am a Welsh actor. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, I starred in such films as The Family Way, Twisted Nerve, The Virgin Soldiers , and the penis transplant comedy Percy.

Here's what I look like all wet.

And shaving with the boys.

Today I look exactly like Oliver Reed.

So listen, there is my friend Austin, and he thinks I am hot'n'stuff and wants to Do Things and he is way awesome and super-adorable but is simply not "my type", but I drank a 4Loko and we made out (like 4Times) and I am like uh ohhhhh what do I do now

also I am still wasted.

also also where are we all meeting tomorrow?

you're in charge! I don't know who else is free. Are you sure you're in "condition"?

(Don't forget you can't text me)

what do you folks know about LA? the first few days of our california trip will be spent there, but tbh the very idea of LA makes me a bit nervous. d & I will be staying with his friend from college, who I expect will help direct us to sites of interest, but any additional info would help.

I've always wanted to go to this place called Splash, have you guys heard of it?

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:08 (fourteen years ago) link

The first gay bar I ever hit was called Splash. Now it's a straight strip club.

cool and remote like dancing girls (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:12 (fourteen years ago) link

the first gay bar I went to was called pulse, but has since been renamed splash.

elmo leonard (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't been in Splash for eons, hated it. :) The kinda place with go-go boys in onstage 'showers' and Liza likely to pop in at 1 a.m. OTOH, it's near the new gay SPORTS BAR! There's always Brooklyn, or The Eagle? Do you want to meet at Pieces, then improvise?

I guess donna rouge is recovering from some post grad bacchanal, or already looking for work?

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh I was just kidding about Splash, I feel like it's the go-to spot for hateful, prissy queens and way overpriced drinks, two thinks I dislike very, very much. I've always wanted to go to Nowhere but does that have tables like Julius or Pieces do? Does the Eagle?

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Nowhere has a few small tables, I recall. And some sort of couch in the back.

I forgot that the Eagle doesn't open til 10, and it's dress code night.

I am wearing jeans and could perhaps take my shirt off. This might be worth it for the lol.

(Rice Dream) (Stevie D), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:13 (fourteen years ago) link

will remember to wear leather cologne if I ever go there

i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh, I'm not sure you could drag me into a bar called the "Eagle" on leather night, even if you had me on a leash (a studded, leather leash). at the very least, I think my skin would divulge itself of my skeleton and run the other direction
