Jenny is doing her job interview right now. With the governor? I think that's what she said.
― Jesse, Friday, 5 October 2007 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh. Not the gov. himself, just one of his people.
i decided to make french toast for lunch and it was the best decision i've made in weeks.

QUESTION: If the Cubs 'clinched it' last week, then why do they need to win the next three games to get in the playoffs??
― KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link
the cubs are in the playoffs sarah. they need to win the next three to STAY in the playoffs.

there is a very snippy contestant on jeopardy right now. alex was trying to ignore her but he just broke out one of his patented "ooooooooh..... i'm so sorry sarah, try to remember your phrasing ok? gooooood."

I miss coming home from school and watching Jeopardy!. It's been on Ch. 7 at 3:30 for at least 15 years.
― jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:43 (sixteen years ago) link
it was on at four or four thirty in boston when i was in high school, me and my dad would watch it when he got home from work. then it was on again at 7 or 7:30.
my brother in law lost to that dude who won like 700 times in a row and made 16 billion dollars in the process.

Live from Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
That's a good lineup for the Hideout.
― Eazy, Friday, 5 October 2007 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, my dad would frequently be getting home from his afternoon bike ride in time for the show. The vision I have is him on the floor of the TV room, doing leg lifts in nothing but spandex, barking out the answers.

Memories I have of my dad when I was little do not include: bike ride leg lifts spandex jeopardy
I watched the news with him.

I found a neigborhood with a park and several streets named after Michigan towns.

ponys "secret" show at the hideout tomorrow as well.
nh lakes region was to pricey for my family as a kid, the family across the street used to summer there every year. as a teen and 20 something we'd make occasional day and weekend trips up there, it's beautiful. i have fond memories of alton bay. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/Winnipesaukee_Sunset_8-28-2002_%28JJH%29.jpg

@Dan -- that is v. interesting. Escanaba on Da South Side.
― jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link
dan, they share names with michigan towns but i'm not sure they're named after them. i'd guess marquette st was named after the explorer. saginaw and muskegon are both indian names. bessemer park was named after henry bessemer, the english inventor who developed the bessemer process of steelmaking.
― chicago kevin, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link
It's just ruining my work, at least on these weeks when there are no pressing tasks and I'm just supposed to be studying and doing projects. My nights and weekends are internet-free.
― Jordan, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link
The word "Escanaba" roughly translates from various regional native languages to "flat rock".

My mom just called to tell me her cousin died. Then she asked if Nick and I would go to the wake, which will be in DeKalb, and bring a floral arrangement. I was like, um, I don't know, at the very least we could send a card. She responds with a very disappointed sigh. I have only met him once as an adult.
― KitCat, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link
I think it's too big of a coincidence that they're all next to each other, though. There is at least a precedent with the streets of north of Andersonville being named after Philadelphia suburbs -- Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, Ardmore, Hollywood -- owing to the fact that the guy who developed the neighborhood around the turn of the century was from Philadelphia.
― jaymc, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link
the city of iron mountain michigan has the streets named and laid out just as detroit does (though on a smaller scale). it was supposedly done to try to attract workers from detroit, the theory being they would already know their way around. my old boss built the post office there when he worked for the GSA in the mid 70s.

I almost always take a county road shortcut around Iron Mountain. There are way too many stoplights there.
― dan m, Friday, 5 October 2007 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link
This site says that Escanaba, Saginaw, and Muskegon are all named after the Michigan towns but that Marquette is named after the explorer.

My greatest pleasure at this job is clearing out "Flagged for follow-up" emails.
My most infuriating displeasure is finding rotting easter eggs--little surprises that the predecessor left. Every couple of days there's something new to clog up my workflow. Today I made sense of a big case's file only to find a whole new drawer with the mysterious label "TBF."
TBF means old shit that I was too lazy to file, so I stuck it in a drawer.

Then my mom called but I couldn't talk because RIGHT THAT second I had someone buzzing to come in the office and the owner was walking by. When I finally get back in touch with her, it turns out she was calling to tell me she's depressed. Then she's calls again a while later because she JUST found out her cousin died. Then I disappointed her. the end?
